Transport and Communication

 The planning of New Town was thought out in line keeping in


mind the road linkages with different parts of the country or the
state of West Bengal because without which no promising project
could gain long lasting sustainability.
 The transportation system of New Town has been planned to
connect tie South Bengal and Bangladesh border via National
Highway Nos. 34 and 35.
 The connection to the rest of India on the west bank of the river
Hooghly wall be provided across the Vidyasagar Setu (Second
Hooghly Bridge) and the Vivekananda Setu (Bally Bridge). The
regional road connection across these two bridges wall be
provided along the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, Kona
Expressway and Belghoria Expressway.
 The connection of the New Town to National Highways No. 34
and 35 as well as the E.M. Bypass for moving to South Bengal or
to Vidyasagar Setu wall improve considerably after the
development of the proposed Eastern Expressway which had
been planned to be a part of the future metropolitan highway
network by passing through the existing built up part of Kolkata
and Salt Lake.
The hierarchy of roads according to width of the roads according
to the widthof the road wdthin the project area shall be as
follows:
a) Major Arterial Road (59m.)
b) Arterial Road (49m.)
c) Sub-arterial Road (30m.)
d) Collector Street (24m.)
e) Local Street (12m)

It appears from the above hierarchy that major Arterial Road


which will beholding widest space so to accommodate as much as
6 cars at a time, hence 6 lanes is however highest in the project
area which seems to be ideal for a New Town.

The major arterial road has been planned to connect the Project
Area with the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass at one end and Kazi
Nazrul Islam Sarani (KNIS)on the other. One of the said two points
will be located at the crossing of the Kazi Nazrul Islam Sarani and
the road connecting the New Town with KNIS. The other
interchange will be located at the crossing of the major arterial
road and the southernmost bridge across the Rrishnapur Canal
and connecting to the E.M. Bypass through the existing road
network of Bidhan Nagar.

Public Transport Plan


Keeping in view the future demand for general transport facilities,
CMDA has estimated that by 2011 there would be about 230 lakh
passenger trips which will gradually grow further with the
development of Business District and Industrial Areas in and
around the New Town. The transit systems should therefore
comprise of the following components:-
a) Bus Transit.
b) Suburban Railway System.
c) Electric Trolley or Light Rail

According to citizen feedback, Walkability and Transport are the
main area of intervention followed by Safety & Security, Economy
& Employment and Water.

Nearly 50% of respondents in AA2 and AA3 have stressed on


enhancing the public transport network. Highest no. of responses
for last mile connectivity has been from AA3A. Citizens
commented that options of public transport will increase after
completion of the ongoing Metro Rail project.
