Concept and mechanism.
1. What is the purpose of this technology?
Hybrid Drilling Method is a new technology defined as the method to obtain borehole cores of higher quality
compared with ones by conventional methods. Here “quality” means the grade that obatined cores reproduce
faithfully geological state or rock mass conditions in original places. Based on these high quality cores with high
reproducibility, we could learn more valuable geological information through core observations.
2. What kind of technology did you use in the past?
The grade of core recovery of conventional method is not generally high in mechanically heterogeneous or
anisotropic rock mass conditions. Especially, it was impossible to obtain complete cores from sheared zones or
heavily weathered zones where rigid rock fragments and clayey soft materials are mixture together or cracks are
dense. Moreover, even if collected, they do not reproduce the faithful geological state or rock mass conditions.
3. Where can it be applied for public works?
Many applications have been made in order to meet these requirements in dam site, tunnel, and landslide areas.
The effect of technology
Hybrid Drilling Method cleans the slime using foam as recycle drilling fluid that created by Hybrid air bubble
generator using the compressed air and surfactant polymer, instead of the common drilling fluid, such as water or
water-based drilling mud. Because of the foam fluid doesn’t destroy the surface structure of core sample, therefore
Hybrid Drilling Method can drill smoothly and avoid structural disorder by excessive water pressure, obtains
undisturbed samples for various rock mechanics testing. This method applies to core drilling in hard and soft rock,
especially useful to get core samples from fractured zone.

”Hybrid Drilling Method” for high quality core sampling

Some methods and apparatus are known to obtain high quality cores. ”Hybrid Drilling Method” (HI-
TEC Inc., HP) which was developed by HI-TEC Inc. is representative one of them (Figs.1 and 2). The
method is powered by rotary type’s hydraulic pressure for drilling. The tip of drill consist of diamond
bit and special double core tube, and the slime treatment using bubble solution from the compressed
air and surfactant polymer (Figs.3). The method can drill smoothly using less water and no damage to
the core, especially under the groundwater and artesian groundwater. Then it becomes easily to
extract pore water from thin cracks for water quality analysis.

Comparison of Hybrid Drilling Method and existing method

The following photos show the difference of core sample between Hybrid Drilling Method and existing drilling
method, which obtained in Japan. We can understand the difference of technology very well through the
photos. In addition to provide more important geological information through the core observation, the
undisturbed core samples are very useful for various of soil and rock test, therefore we can provide accurate
geological data to the design and construction.
