National symbols

Content:

A national symbol is a symbol of any entity considering and manifesting itself to


the world as a national community: the sovereign states but also nations and
countries in a state of colonial or other dependence. National symbols are symbols
of authority that are constitutionally ordered to be respected as the figure of the
country's authority, government , and people

Examples of national symbols are:

1. The National flag

2. The National map

3. The National anthem and pledge

4. The constitution

5. The National currency

6. The mace
7. Coat of arm

8. The seal of the president

9. National passport

10. The court of law.

Content:

The constitution: is a body of rules and regulations which is used to govern a state
and country.

It guide various governmental institution. It also contains how presidents,


governors, and chairmen are chosen into office, their functions, term In office.
THE MACE: The mace is a national symbols used in the national assembly. It
represents a symbol of authority and the supreme law of the country.

Behavioural objectives: At the end of the lesson pupils should be able to:

1. explain the meaning of national flag

2. describe the coat of arms as national symbols.

constitution and the mace as national symbols

Content:

NATIONAL FLAG: The Nigerian is divided into three coloured equal part I.e two
green and one white . The green stands for the nation's rich(soil) agriculture and
the white stands for peace and unity. Mr. Taiwo Akinkumi was the man that design
the Nigerian flag.
THE COAT OF ARM: The Nigerian coat of arm is also called the armorial
bearing. The coat of arm have black shield which stands for the nation's fertile
soil. The two silver bends that looks like Alphabet Y stands for River Benue and
River Niger .The Eagle on the top represent the strength and the two horses stand
for dignity. The motto of the country is unit and faith, peace and progress.

Content:

NATIONAL ANTHEM: it represent the nation's virtues , values and the call to
patriotism. It written by ASP Emmanuel odiase and composed into song by prof.
Akin bula in 1998.

Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria's call obey

To serve our fatherland

With love and strength and faith

The labor of our heroes past

Shall never be in vain

To serve with heart and might

One nation bound in freedom, peace, and unity.

Oh God of creation, direct our noble cause

THE NATIONAL CURRENCY: They are in different unit called kobo (lower) and
Naira (higher).

The naira (sign: ₦; code: NGN) is the currency of Nigeria. It is subdivided into
100 kobo.

Content: Different between national symbols and other symbols.

National symbols are symbols that represent the entire country while other symbols
represent groups or individuals within a country. Examples of national symbols as
mentioned earlier are the national flag, the coat of arms, the national anthem,
currency, the mace, the constitution, etc. Other symbols do not represent the entire
country. They are used by individuals and groups to set themselves apart from
other groups. Examples of these symbols are traditional rulers, religious leaders,
crests of schools and other groups such as the Nigerian Medical Association

Topic: Respect for other symbols.

Behavioural objectives: At the end of the lesson pupils should be able to:

1. list other symbols


2. demonstrate respect for other symbols.

leaders and religious leaders in almanacs.

Content:

OTHER SYMBOLS : They are symbols that do not represent the entire country .
They are used by individuals and groups to set themselves apart from other groups.
Examples of these symbols are traditional rulers, religious leaders, crests of
schools and other groups such as the Nigerian Medical Association .

Examples of other symbol.


1. Traditional leaders in our community e.g The kings , obas, Emirs, Ezes, chiefs
etc

2. Religious leaders in our community.e.g pastors, imams, priest, pope, Reverend


fathers, Herbalist .

Respect for national symbols:


Demonstrate respect for our national symbols by the folowings steps
1.Stand when singing national anthem, wherever you might , when you hear the
national anthem chorus , stand firm on your feet to show respect .

2. Respect for our constitution by obeyung the rules and regulations laid down in
the constitution.

3. Perform your obligations as true citizen of the country . E.g. voting during
election, environment sanitations and protecting the public property.

4.Handling naira with care . Don't fold or tear the Naira note.

5. Paying your tax as obedience to the national constituted authority and respect to
the constitutionof the state or country.

6. Keep the flag clean , do not rough handle the flag.

Topic: Respect for elders in the society.

Behavioural objectives: At the end of the lesson pupils should be able to:

1. explain respect
2. respect constituted authority.

Respect for other symbols

Content: in the community respect is one of the value of a good citizen . A good
citizen must have respect to the constituted authority, and government officials.

How to show respect for elders:

1. Greet your patent and elderly ones by prostrating as a boy and kneeling down as
a girl. E.g Good morning sir, good afternoon ma, good night ma.

2. Do not refuse to run an errand for the elders

3. Help your elder to carry loads or bags, when you sight them coming.

4. Do not insult or fight an elderly person

5. Be obedient to the instructions of the elders in your community

Topic: Respect for constituted authority.

1. list various constituted authorities

2. show respect for constituted authority

Respect for elders in the community.

Content: constituted authority refers to the the different form of leadership


established for the smooth running of the society . There are different forms of
constituted authority in the community namely:

1.Traditional constituted authority

2.Religious constituted authority


3.Organisational authority.

4. Governmental constituted authority.

How to show respect to the constituted authority:

1. Obedience and respect to the rules and regulations laid down by the constituted
authority.

2. Do not violate the principled of the government

3. Perform your obligations as a member of such organisation or religious group.

4. Respect to the leaders in the place of authority.

5. Payment of tax is sign of respect to the government.

1. say the meaning of government property

Respect for constituted authority

Content:

Government properties government made available for the public use. They are
general properties meant to be used by the community as a whole. Examples are,
government office , post office, health centers, public mall, Garage , schools,
road , market, e.t.c.

How to respect the Government properties

1. Do not liter the road with refuges , instead drop your refuse in a public bin

2. Do not write with chalk or charcoal or make any scratch on the wall or
government vehicles, Bill board, tank, poster e.t.c

3. Do not forget to turn off the public tap after use

4. If you see a running tap, turn it off to avoid wastage.

5. Do not break or destroy any government properties

6. Do not steal any government

7. When you someone destroying or stealing the government properties, call the
police.
8. Help the government in educating people on how to maintain the public
properties

9. Come out to perform your obligation during environmental sanitation

10. Abide with the rules guiding the public property.
