Would we have been better off if India

have been undivided?

“The partition of India was a

fundamental mistake out of emotions.”

(Maulana Abu Al-Kalam Azad)

History of mankind is full of romantic delusions and moral

illusions as a man is more an emotional being than being a
rational creature. The emotions and romances have not only
created extraordinary works of Philosophy, Poetry, Painting,
Music and Dance but also changed the course of history, altered
the map of the globe and division of Indian sub-continent in
1947 can be quoted as an example of it when psychological
factors, emotions and romance drove the politics, hijacked the
minds of leaders and masses and caused a colossal damage.
Division of India was a tragedy, even worse than the tragedies of
Shakespeare, which caused economic, educational, cultural and
psychological crisis which we are facing till date.
That’s why I must say that we would have been better off if
India have been undivided!
“I warned you that the ‘Two Nation
Theory’ was death-knell to a meaningful,
dignified life.”

(Maulana Abu Al-Kalam Azad)

The doctrine which provided the ideological base of division

was “Two Nation Theory”. In relation to any political doctrine
there are two questions to be asked and considered rationally:
(1) Are its theoretical tenets true? (2) Is its practical policy likely
to increase human happiness/ decrease suffering of masses? For
me, theoretical tenets of ‘Two Nation Theory’ are false and I
think its practical maxims increased the suffering of masses. My
objections to this theory are of two sorts: one, it is based on
Misreading of Cultural History of Indian sub-continent inspired
by negative emotions; and the other, that it is based on
Misinterpretation of Islam. Secondly, practical policy of this
theory resulted in mass-killing, hatred, economic crisis and
many other evils.
That’s why I must say that we would have been better off if
India have been undivided!

“Partition of India will lead this sub-

continent to an economic crisis.”
(Maulana Abu Al-Kalam Azad)

Partition took place in 1947 after a massive bloodbath, India and

Pakistan were formed (as Capital States) with an uneven
distribution of economic resources which led to economic crisis
of this sub-continent. Indian economy was the strongest
economy at that time and used to contribute 15-20% to World’s
economy, it collapsed due to uneven distribution of resources as
per “Domino Effect Theory”. Secondly, Mr. Jinnah never had an
economic plan in his mind for Pakistan as this state was created
out of emotions, not reasons which led to an economic chaos
that resulted in hijacking of limited resources by the Elite as per
the discourse of economic evolution of mankind. This
dictatorship of Bourgeoisie caused two major damages; one is
class exploitation in Pakistan. Class struggle is a necessary evil
as per the discourse of history but Pakistan went beyond this and
‘class exploitation’ was created which is still present in Pakistan
with deeper roots than before. Second is that it caused
unnecessary interference of Capital States like USA in domestic
and foreign decision making of Pakistan as the Bourgeoisie was
tilted towards Super Power. It resulted in the loss of
Independence and Sovereignty of the Nation for which Pakistan
was created. The purpose of division has suffered Death!
That’s why I must say that we would have been better off if
India have been undivided!
“Try to anticipate the damages of
partition, it will cause educational and
cultural crisis.”

(Maulana Abu Al-Kalam Azad)

The loss of Educational Heritage was the largest loss to the

Indians in general and Muslims in specific. Just like distribution
of economic resources, distribution of educational institutions on
the base of geographical location was inevitable. This
distribution was actually the destruction of education sector. It
caused division of educational institutions into two States which
weakened the heritage. It limited the vision and scope of
education of masses, it limited the research and versatility of
education for scholarly minds and all this resulted in the crisis of
Indian Culture, Literature, Philosophy, Fine Arts and Intellect
which ultimately led to the “Identity and Intellectual Crisis”.
What Pakistanis lost because of division are: University of
Calcutta, Aligarh Muslim University, Delhi University, Darul
Uloom Deoband, Darul Uloom Mazhar e Islam in Bareilly,
Darul Musannefin Shibli Academy, Darul Uloom Nadwatul
Ulama Lucknow, Punjab University Chandigarh and so on.
From a Muslim’s Perspective, we lost our great Islamic
Educational Institutions after the partition!
What Indians lost are: King Edward Medical University Lahore,
Government College University Lahore, University of
Agriculture Faisalabad, Forman Christian College University
Lahore, National College of Arts Lahore, Sindh Maddrasshtul
Islam University Karachi, University of Punjab Lahore, Islamia
College University Peshawar and so on.
We would have been on the Top in education, research,
technology, fine arts and other fields if these great institutions
have been undivided and operated together in an intricate
manner as a “Single Unit”!

“Eleven hundred years of

multiculturalism have enriched India
with common achievements of all of us.”

(Maulana Abu Al-Kalam Azad)

The loss of Cultural Heritage of India was also because of

division of this sub-continent. It affected Indian Civilization
mainly in two ways: (1) Harmonious Multiculturalism (based on
religion, ethnicity, language and other bases of cultural
diversity) was the core value of Indian Civilization but partition
on the base of Religion caused a damage to this. It made
multiculturalism an evil for this land. It caused hatred among
different communities in India on different bases mostly on the
base of religion & language and Civilization collapsed. That’s
why there are several separation movements in present-day India
and Pakistan (like Sindhu Daish Movement, Khalistan
Movement, Azaad Balochistan Movement and so on) as All-
India Muslim League had set an example. (2) Multiculturalism
was also an informal Educational Institution in India, i.e.
Takshila University is an example of it, even stronger than
formal institutions. It taught both masses and Scholars. It taught
ethics, values, vision, philosophy & philosophical diversity, wit,
intellect, creativity, literature and fine arts. It produced the
brightest minds of Intellectual History of mankind like Chankya
Kautaliya.
Partition of India deformed this informal but impactful
Institution. Partition disbanded this Organization as
Multiculturalism was disturbed because of geographical division
on the base of Religion.
We would have been on the Top of Theism, Philosophy,
Epistemology, Knowledge, Theodicy, Literature and Culture if
we have been undivided!

“The most intellectual, civilized, patient,

enriched, colossal and stable Civilization
was the Indian Civilization at its Peak!”

This was not only the geographical division but also the
destruction of Great Indian Civilization and of the Great Indian
Dream too!
History agrees the notion that we would have been better off if
India have been undivided!
