SAFE LIGHT

of lighting inside and
outside tunnels.
More than just
light at the end
of the tunnel
Drivers' eyes have to perform a
complex task as their vehicles
approach a tunnel, for suddenly
they must be able to identify any
obstacles inside the dark tunnel
although they are fully attuned
to bright daylight.

So that the flow of traffic is not

impeded, it is therefore
important to illuminate the
interior of the tunnel in such a
way that road users can always
see into the tunnel without L th
reducing speed, even during the
day.

The required tunnel lighting

during the day depends on the
luminance in the drivers' field of
vision as they approach the
tunnel and on the traffic
conditions.

This level of illumination and

the quality criteria to be met by
the lighting are specified in
national standards, such as
DIN 67524 or RVS 9.27.

The right light for every tunnel
Traffic is increasingly being diverted underground, through tunnels and
underpasses today.

This is the only way to accommodate today's high volume of traffic in

view of the settlement density and growing demands to protect the
environment. Up to 100,000 vehicles per day on urban motorways are
not uncommon today.

Exceedingly high standards are imposed on the tunnel lighting so that

these vehicles can drive through safely, even in periods of peak traffic.

The tunnel lighting has a major effect on traffic safety, the smooth flow
of traffic and the efficiency of the energy input.

The high concentration of exhaust gases combined with gritting salt

produces a highly corrosive atmosphere in the tunnel, yet the lighting
must continue to operate reliably for many, many years.

Siteco has developed outstanding solutions meeting all these

requirements in terms of lighting technology and cost-efficiency.

Planning tunnel lighting projects
Standard calculation
programs of the type used
for road lighting cannot be
used when planning
lighting systems for
tunnels. Reflections from
the walls must be included
on account of the physical
conditions prevailing in
tunnels. The road user's
subjective sense of safety
also requires extensive Transit zone
illumination of the walls
Conventional calculation
programs for road lighting
cannot be used to calculate
and assess the wall light
density.

In the transit zone, the Entrance zone

luminaires can be mounted
at regular intervals, but in
the entrance zone they must
be varied in accordance with
the adaptability of the
human eye.
Special algorithms are
required to obtain this
positioning, but these are
not included in conventional
programs.

A93 motorway, Regensburg

17
Requirements for tunnel calculations
Not only photometric requirements must be taken into
account when planning a lighting system for tunnels.
Maintenance must also considered.
For this reason, the luminaires are normally mounted
approx. 0.5 m off-centre so that only one lane need be
closed for maintenance work.

When planning the illumination for a tunnel or

drawing up a tender, we can undertake the necessary
calculations in accordance with the applicable
standards. For this purpose, we will require the tunnel
data as specified in the checklist on page 19.
