CHAPER 1
Physical Education

In this lesson, you are going to learn the different concepts commonly associated with Physical Education and Physical
fitness. Gaining knowledge about these basic principles will pave the way for you to better grasp the deeper concepts to
be introduced within this course.

At the end of this module, the learners will be able to:

1. Analyze the fitness as the major goal of Physical Education;


2. Define and interpret the meaning of Physical and its relevance to wellness development as well as to their course;
3. Provide students with fundamentals knowledge of good posture and movement in all action, this where it is needed;
4. Develop coordination, flexibility and power after indulging into its varied physical activities;
5. Recognize the importance of healthy living;
6. Demonstrate body conditioning exercises;
7. Conditioning Exercises for Physical Fitness Test;
8. Demonstrate the Components of Physical fitness;
9. Recognize the Safety measures for Physical conditioning;
10. Warm-up Exercises;
11. Testing Activities and Conditioning or Developmental activities.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION came from the latin word “physica” meaning physics and “education”, meaning the training
of the bodily organs and power with a view to the promotion of hearts and vigor.

To have a sound body, one must have a sound mind. Thus, being state of mental health. The World Health
Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, social wellness, not merely the absence of
the disease or infirmity.

The definition emphasizes health as a positive of well – being not just absence of disease. People in a state of
emotional; physical and social well- being fulfill life responsibilities; effectively in daily life; and are satisfied with their
interpersonal relationship and themselves.

Physical education as in integral part of general part of general education which aim to develop the physical, social,
emotional, spiritual, and the mental traits of man through the physical activities.

The philosophy of physical education emphasized using activities to reach valuable education goals, the mental,
social, spiritual, and moral goals.

The main idea an of physical education is to help the student acquired skills and develop an affection for the activities
themselves.

Its aims to help students develop physical competence skills and good habits it assists in developing smart,
competent intelligent individuals it refers to the individual growth and development to the total body movement, safety
when it comes to physical activities

Instructions in various kinds of physical activities promotes the physical development and well-being of the
individual.

Physical education generally taught from pre-school, elementary, secondary and tertiary level.

Sports and Recreation and leisure is the proper classification for physical education both from logical representative,
It provides opportunities for socialization as well as for the development of the capacities of the individual.

LEGAL BASES OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION


In Accordance with the pertinent provisions of Republic Act (RA)No. 7722, the following policies, standard and
guidelines are hereby accepted and Promulgated by the commissions for the purpose of nationalizing physical
education in the country in the end in view of keeping pace with the demand by great competitiveness.

A. Legal bases, acquisition and importance of physical education as part of the curriculum
The importance of Physical Education as part of the curriculum is in 1986 Philippines constitution, Article XIV, sec
19 which states shall promote physical education and encourages sports programs, league competitions and
amateur sports, including training for international competitions, to further self- discipline, teamwork, and
excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry.

B. The curriculum Philosophy of Physical Education Movement Enhancement


All educational institutions shall undertake regular sports activities throughout the country in cooperation with
athletic clubs and other sectors.

C. Constitutional Provision
These Constitutional provisions can be achieved in Physical Education. According to David (2010), Physical
Education is basic to the best development of Child and youth. It should be a process of experience, progressing
from the simple type, for small youngsters to none advance movement.

D. Learning Outcomes
The curriculum develops them to grow physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally as individual and members
of a group.

E. Learning Approaches
It should develop interest and attitude that will enable youth to feel that they have a place in this world, can give
great contribution in building the society. This is well-planned program of Physical Education to ensure
effectiveness of instruction.

• Means that physical fitness is a personal matter and it is viewed within the context of an individual is a
personal responsibility
• A person’s physical fitness is determined by such age or hereditary, their behavior. Although many people
can’t control their age or hereditary, their lifestyle can help them become physically fit and stay that way.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPORT AND GAME?


- SPORTS are activities practiced individually (athletics, horseracing, cycling)
- GAMES are activities played in a team. The game has its own rules and is usually played with a kind of ball. A
referee decides about the game

There are many BALL GAMES in the world; FOOTBALL is the most popular game.
In America it is called SOCCER. A typical American ball game is BASEBALL.
Popular around world are VOLLEDYBALL, BASKETBALL and HANDBALL.

HOW CAN WE DIVIDE SPORTS AND GAMES?


We can divide all sports into two groups according to the place where they can be practiced;
- INDOOR SPORTS – gymnastics, table tennis, badminton, boxing, wrestling, yoga, aerobics…
- OUTDOOR SPORTS – hiking, rock climbing, horse riding, golf, cycling or riding, athletics…

Most sports and almost all games can be done both indoors and outdoors.

SPORTS PRACTICED IN SUMMER/WINTER


Sports and games can be practiced in summer or in winter but there are also many all-season activities
- Summer sports – Swimming, windsurfing, yachting, rollerblading
- Winter sports – Skiing (down-hill, cross-country, ski jumping), skating, speed skating
