INTRODUCTION

One of the great truths about the modern society is that “information” is everywhere. Information is
pervasive and essential part of the society and our lives. Humans are, at their essence, processor
and user of information. Human has always been dependent upon information to help make decisions
and guide their actions. Increase the sheer volume of information and complexity of information
systems have come about largely because of the advances in information technology. Information
literacy is a set of skills and knowledge that not only allow us to find, evaluate, and the use of
information we need, but perhaps more important, allow us to filter out information we don’t need.
Information skills are necessary that help us successfully navigate the present and future landscape

DISCUSSION WHAT IS IFORMATION LITERECY?
:

Information literacy is a crucial skill in the pursuit of knowledge.  It involves recognizing when
information is needed and being able to efficiently locate, accurately evaluate, effectively use, and
clearly communicate information in various formats.  It refers to the ability to navigate the rapidly
growing information environment, which encompasses an increasing number of information suppliers
as well as the amount supplied, and includes bodies of professional literature, popular media,
libraries, the Internet, and much more.  Increasingly, information is available in unfiltered formats,
raising questions about its authenticity, validity, and reliability.  This abundance of information is of
little help to those who have not learned how to use it effectively.

Information Literacy

 Information literacy is an understanding and set of abilities enabling individuals to recognize

when information is needed and have the capacity to locate, evaluate and use effectively the
needed information.
 The ability to access, organize and use information from a variety of sources.
 Is a set of individual competencies needed to identify, evaluate and use information in the most
ethical, efficient and effective way across all domains, occupations and profession
 Information literacy enables people to make good use of information and communication
technology.

To become lifelong learners, we need to know not just how to learn, but how to teach ourselves.
We must acquire the skills necessary to be independent, self-directed learners.  An information
literate person should be able to:

 Identify information needs and determine the extent of information needed.  Clearly and
concisely define the question to be answered, and realize that the question may evolve.

SENIOR
4 HIGH SCHOOL LEARNING MODULE S/Y 2020 – 2021
MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY
 Locate and retrieve appropriate sources of information.
Understand the structure of information: how is it produced, disseminated, organized,
cataloged, stored, and retrieved, and how these factors vary by discipline.  For example, how do
scholars or professionals keep up to date in and contribute to their field.

Use indexes and other search tools effectively and efficiently to find specific resources
(e.g., select appropriate tools, formulate search strategies, use appropriate search techniques,
evaluate results)

 Evaluate information and its sources critically.

Understand different types of sources and formats, and how to use them.

Evaluate the relevance and reliability of the information retrieved.

 Synthesize the information retrieved, integrate it into one's current knowledge base, and
successfully apply it to the original information need.
 Present this newly acquired knowledge so that others can use it.
Determine the audience's needs and the best presentation format; know the standards
and criteria for presenting information in the relevant subject/field/discipline.

Properly cite sources: direct the audience to sources of further information and
acknowledge one's sources.

 Translate these abilities and concepts to new projects and disciplines.

 Boredom/ lack of interest/ laziness
 Arrogance

AVOIDING PLAGIARISM

 Taking good notes and keeping track of your sources will help you avoid plagiarism.
 Here are three ways to use the information you find while you’re researching
a. Summarizing
b. Paraphrasing
c. Quoting directly

WAYS TO USE THE INFORMATION YOU FIND WHILE YOU’RE RESEARCHING

 Like paraphrase, a summary records information in different words
but much more briefly.
SUMMARIZING  You write the general statement of the author’s content or position.
SENIOR

 Translate all the content into different words.
 Helps you understand the material.
PARAPHRASING  Records author’s reasoning and details.
 This is time consuming so be sure the information you paraphrase
is relevant.
 You still need to cite this as a source
 Records the source’s exact words.
 Use only when the author’s wording makes a point extraordinarily
vivid, concise and imaginative.
DIRECT QUOTATION  Too much can be time consuming, awkward, and the interfere with
your really understanding the material

 As you examine each source, make separate notes of each

fact, point of view or quotation you might want to use in your
STEPS TO TAKING GOOD essay.
NOTES  Be sure to use a method that best suit your style but be
above all ORGANIZED in how you keep your notes.
 Your package include some examples of note taking forms
NOTE TAKING EXAMPLES  Use any model you feel comfortable with or create your own.
 Your teacher may ask you to hand these in with your class.
 Be sure to identify the source of the information on the note
taking worksheet.
DOCUMENT EVERYTHING  Include the author’s name, book, title, website, magazine
name, article title, page number, etc. to identify the source of
the information.
CREATING REFERENCE  List all the references that you used while ongoing research
LIST or gathering information.
Note:

THE LESS REFERENCE INFORMATION YOU CAN FIND ON A WEBSITE, THE LESS RELIABLE
ITS OTHER INFORMATION TENDS TO BE
