Text: Chemistry, 13th edition by Chang/Goldsby, McGraw Hill’s Connect
for Homework and Adaptive Learning.
A scientific calculator or graphing calculator will be needed.
Grading:
 Exams 55%
 Labs 25%
 Final Exam 15%
 HW 5%
There will be 3 exams given this semester.
The comprehensive final exam.
Objectives of the Course:
The course is the second of a two semester course and will include the basic concepts of chemistry:
Properties of solutions, Chemical Kinetics, Chemical Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, Acid-Base Equilibria
and Solubility Equilibria, Entropy and Free Energy, and Electrochemistry.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF THE COURSE:

1. Students are expected to adhere to the attendance policy.
2. Students are expected to read the chapter assignments in the textbook and to
complete any other assignments, which your instructor may require you to perform.
3. Students will be required to take quizzes, exams, and a comprehensive final.
4. Students are required to have passing grades in both lecture and lab to pass the
course. A student’s laboratory grade is based on pre/post-lab assignments and/or lab
reports.

EXAM POLICY:

1. There will be 3 or 4 lecture-based exams given during the semester and a cumulative
final exam. No exam grades will be dropped.
2. The final exam for College Chemistry (II) will be multiple choice and free response .
No one will be exempt from the final.
3. Use only a non-programmable calculator for the exams.
4. Exams will be timed and locked down with Respondus (more info to follow)
5. Cell phones may not be used as a calculator during an exam. All cell phones are to be
turned off during exams and not visible!
6. If miss an exam, your instructor may decide to give you a make-up exam; only if you
have a valid excuse with proof. You must contact your instructor within 48 hours of
the exam. Your instructor’s policy may differ. If so he/she will provide, in writing, the
policies for handling absences from examinations.

GRADING POLICY:

Your final grade is a weighted average of the components listed in the table below. Note that
each component is weighted differently. A letter grade will be assigned accordingly. You
may use the table below as a guideline to calculate your grade.

Weighted Average is Calculated Letter Grade Determination:

Based on the Following
100% – 90% = A
89.99% – 85% = B+
Chapter exam avg. 55 %
84.99% – 80% = B
Final exam 15 %
79.99% – 75% = C+
Laboratory 25 %
74.99% – 70% = C
Homework 5%
69.99% – 65% = D+
64.99% – 60% = D
≤ 59.99 = F
WITHDRAWAL POLICY:

Students who submit a course withdrawal form on or before the registrar’s official withdrawal
date (see college Homepage calendar) are guaranteed a grade of "W". It is at the discretion of the
instructor to grant a grade of “W” after the official deadline. If you stop attending classes
without officially withdrawing you will receive an "F" grade.

Important Note: The course is officially over the day of the final exam. There will be no make-
up exams, no extra credit work, no late lab reports, homework assignments, or any other
activity accepted to change your final grade. As per the Family Educational Rights and Privacy
Act (FERPA), grades will never be discussed by e-mail or phone or with anyone else but you
and only you in person.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

The college expects all students to attend every class session for which they are registered.
Students are responsible for all that transpires in class whether they are in attendance or not.
The College defines excessive absence or lateness as more than the equivalent of one week of
class meetings during the semester. Excessive absence or lateness may lead to failure in a
course or removal from the class roster.

Laboratory Absence: There are NO make-up sessions for absence from laboratory. Your
instructor will provide to you, in writing, with her/his policies for handling absences from
laboratory. If you are present for all labs, your lowest lab grade will be dropped.

DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES:

If you have any kind of learning disability that may impact your course work, please read the
documents from the following link http://www.sunysuffolk.edu/Students/Disability.asp.
Students who need special services or accommodations must submit written proof of their
disability to their home campus office so that appropriate arrangements can be made before the
start of classes.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES:

Use of cell phones, texting, paging devices and voice recorders are strictly prohibited in BOTH
lecture and lab, unless you have permission from your instructor. All Students must turn these
devices off prior to entering the classroom and laboratory. If an emergency arises that would
necessitate you receiving a call, place your phone on vibrate mode. If you must take a call (for
emergency only), you should remove yourself from the classroom/lab area before you answer in
an audible manner.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND OTHER MATERIALS:

The College's Student Code of Conduct expressly prohibits "engaging in any form of academic
dishonesty”. The term "academic dishonesty" includes, but is not limited to, cheating on an
examination; plagiarizing, that is, the taking and passing off as one's own work the ideas,
writings, or work of another, without citing the source; submitting work from another course
unless receiving advance approval to do so by the instructor, stealing or possessing stolen
examinations or course materials; posing as another person or allowing another person to pose
as oneself; falsifying academic records; receiving help from others in work to be submitted, and
using a cell phone during an exam if contrary to stated course rules. Any such infraction of the
above in the course is considered cause, at the least, a grade of zero on an exam or paper or a
grade of F in the course.

LABORATORY POLICY:

Students are obliged to read, sign and adhere to the Department’s Safety Rules. These policies
are essential to your safety in the laboratory. Students are required to wear personal safety
protection as outlined by the Safety Rules and the instructor. There are no exceptions. Failure to
comply is grounds for dismissal from the laboratory. Students are expected to read the
laboratory manual, familiarize themselves with the upcoming experiment and to complete all
pre-laboratory assignments and post-lab reports. Being on time for laboratory is essential. If you
are late (more than 10 minutes), you will not be allowed to carry out the experiment for that day
and this will be counted as an absence. Laboratory absences cannot be made up. Due to Covid
-19 guidelines we will be meeting on campus in groups of 8 students at a time. As a result you
have been assigned to “A, B, or C” group. Please refer to the attached lab schedule to determine
the days your group will meet with me in person. When not on campus, you will be working
on a virtual lab using BeyondLabz. More info will follow on the first day of lab when we will
all meet in a synchronous Blackboard Collaborate session.
