“Math is Life.”
I. IDENTIFICATION
Identify the following terms that is been described by the statement below. Write your answer on the
space provided.

_______________________1. It is relation define as a set of ordered pairs (x, y) where no two or more distinct
ordered pairs have the same first element (x).
_______________________2. It is a rule that relates values from a set of values (called the domain) to a second set
of values (called the range).
_______________________3. It is an expression that can be written as a ratio of two polynomials.
_______________________4. It is a symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter
like x or y.
_______________________5. A number on its own is called?
_______________________6. It is a number used to multiply a variable.
_______________________7. Is a function such as a quadratic, a cubic, a quartic, and so on,
involving only non-negative integer powers of x.
_______________________8. It is either a single number or a variable, or numbers and variables
multiplied together.
_______________________9. Is a group of terms (the terms are separated by + or − signs).
_______________________10. It says how many times to use the value in a multiplication.

II. PROBLEM SOLVING

A. Evaluate the following functions. Write your final answer at the box and show your solution at
the back. (2pts. Each)

1. f(x) = 3x – 4, find f (5)

2. p(x) = 2x2  + 5, find  p (−3)

3. f(x) = 2x+4, find x (5)

4. f(x) = 1 − x + x2 find x (3)

5.  find x (–3)
B. Representing Real-life situations using Rational Functions.

Problem: (10pts.)
Mary Joyce takes 2 hours to plant 500 flower bulbs. John Paul takes 3 hours to plant 450 flower bulbs.
Working together, how long should it take them to plant 1500 bulbs?

Note: Use one of the work formulas to write a rational equation, for example  . We know r, the combined
work rate, and we know W, the amount of work that must be done. What we don't know is how much time it will
take to do the required work at the designated rate.

Problem: (10pts.)
Average speed (or velocity) can be computed by the formula s=d/t. Consider a 100 meter track used for foot
races. The speed of a runner can be computed by taking the time it will take him to run the tracks and applying it to
the formula s=100/t, since the distance is fixed.
Let x represent the time it takes the runner to run 100 meters. Then speed can be represented as a function
s(x) as follows:
S(x)=100/x
Continuing the scenario above, construct a table of values for the speed of the runner against different run
times. Let x be the run time and s(x) be the speed of the runner in meters per second, where s(x)=100/x. The table of
values for run times from 10 seconds to 20 seconds is as follow:

x 12 14 16 18 20
S(x)
