Band Syllabus

Classroom Expectations
Behavior – Students are expected to follow ALL school behavioral guidelines as found in
the student handbook.
Cellphones and other electronics-items should only be used when instructed by the
teacher. If student is found using them, they will be asked to put them away or they stay
in the possession of the teacher until the end of the mod and be put on the discipline
matrix as stated in the handbook.

Grading

Concert Attendance – Attendance to all performances is REQUIRED. Missing a concert

will result in an automatic 0 in this grading category. If for some predetermined reason
or serious occurrence (Death in the family, serious illness etc.) a student is unable to
perform in the concert, arrangements will be made between the student and I.

Listening Assignments-Throughout the school year students will have occasional

listening assignments. These assignments are to broaden the horizons and make the
students reflect on certain pieces, composers, and genres. Specific prompts will be
included to help students talk about what they heard.

Playing tests- Students will be assigned certain musical excerpts or scales to play for a
playing test. Playing tests are designed as a check point for me to assess each student
individually. It is the job of a teacher to monitor progress on each student through out
the school year.

Daily Points – Daily points regarding participation, preparedness and attitude will be
tallied every day. Just show up to class prepared, on time, with a pencil and a good
attitude and you will receive all of the points in this category.

Pep band- Pep band is required for high school students and junior high will have the
option to participate. Students will be allowed to have up to 4 excused absences per
year. Missing more than 4 pep bands will affect the student’s grade.
5th & 6th grade band practice charts- Both 5th and 6th grade band students will be
required to fill out practice charts weekly. Both grades will be required to practice 60
minutes a week and bring back the chart signed by a parent. If student practices at
school, the chart is able to be signed by me.

Performances

Attire – Students are expected to dress professionally for all performances.

5th-8th grade – Look nice, no jeans or T-shirts are allowed. Ask me if you have questions
9th-12th grade - Guys are expected to wear a full concert tux which includes: a
white dress shirt, bow tie, black pants, black coat (available from the school), black
shoes, and BLACK SOCKS. Girls are expected to wear concert black clothing that is
appropriate for school functions. Black shoes, pants or knee-length skirts, black tops and
minimal jewelry (small earrings, necklaces and bracelets) are expected.

Behavior – We represent ourselves, our band, our school and our city when we perform.
It is expected that students act as professionals and in a way that positively represents
the school. The best behavior is the only behavior.

trouble earning a good grade. It is my hope that you not only enjoy the semester, but
also develop an appreciation for music for the rest of your life.

Special Accommodations
This class will follow all rules and regulations required by the school and state. If you
have any concerns or questions, contact me or school administration.
I have read and understand the above syllabus. Please remove this section and bring back to
