1. Problem statement -
Breastfeeding technique and associated factors among breastfeeding mothers in Harar city, Eastern Ethiopia
Objectives –
To assess breastfeeding technique and associated factors among breastfeeding mothers.
Title-
Author(year)- Getahun Tiruye , Firehiwot Mesfin , Biftu Geda and Kasiye Shiferaw (2018)
Full reference - Getahun Tiruye at el. Breastfeeding technique and associated factors among breastfeeding mothers in Harar city,
Eastern Ethiopia. International Breastfeeding Journal.2018.(14:34)
Purpose of study- Assessing breastfeeding technique and associated factors among breastfeeding mothers.
Method of study-quantitative study
Type of study –descriptive study
Research design -cross-sectional study
Research setting - Harar city, Eastern Ethiopia
Sample size -422 study participants
Sample technique- Systematic random sampling technique
Methods of data collection - using observation checklist and interviewer administered questionnaire
Data analysis –Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was done to identify independent predictors of BFT
after controlling for confounding variables.
Main finding-The proportion of mothers practicing an effective breastfeeding technique was 43.4% (179/412). Effective
breastfeeding technique was 2.3 times more common among 4
mothers with at least secondary school educational status compared to mothers with no formal education (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR]
2.3; 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 1.1, 3.9). The practice of effective breastfeeding technique was significantly associated with
mothers
who had immediate breastfeeding technique counseling after birth (AOR 1.7, 95% CI 1.1, 2.8) and at least two postnatal visits (AOR
5.9; 95% CI 2.1, 15.9) compared to one visit. Absence of breast problems and having previous breastfeeding experience were also
associated with the likelihood of effective breastfeeding technique practice (AOR 4.0; 95% CI 1.4, 10.9) and (AOR 3.3; 95% CI 1.1,
10.7) respectively
CRETIQUE 1. Breastfeeding technique and associated factors among breastfeeding mothers in Harar city, Eastern Ethiopia
The research approach was quantitative and Research Design used is Quasi experimental Non-Equivalent control group design
.Sample was mothers whose children were admitted.
Tool- A self structured questionnaire. Pilot study was conducted on eight mothers. Sampling technique -purposive sample 60 mothers
30 in experimental and 30 in control group. To prevent contamination experimental group was taken from Paediatric Ward and Private
Ward and control group was taken from Pediatric Surgical I.C.U and Postnatal Ward of the hospital. Pre test was taken from both
control and experimental group. Tool-Self structured teaching was given to experimental group with the help of lesson plan and
Audio- Visual aids. After 72 hours of teaching post test was taken from both experimental and control group. The data analyzed by
calculating mean, mean percentage, SD and 't' test. Chi square was calculated to match the variables.
Results- of the study proved that teaching programme was highly effective in enhancing the knowledge of mothers on prevention and
management of pneumonia in children.1
