SHORT Q/ANS
Q.1What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?

A. DIFFERENCE
AEROBIC RESPIRATION ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION
i) It is the breaking down of It is the breaking down of glucose
food (glucose) into CO2 into lactic acid and the release of
and water with the release energy in the absence of oxygen.

oxygen.
ii) It is the complete breaking It is the incomplete breaking down
down of food. of food.

Less energy is produced.

iii) More energy is produced.

Q.2 Make a list of all parts of the body that air flows through on its way to
lungs.

A. AIR PASSAGE WAY

i) Nose/Nasal cavity

ii) Larynx (voice box)

iii) Trachea (wind pipe)

iv) Bronchi (Singular: bronchus)

v) Bronchioles

vi) Lungs

vii) Alveoli

Q.3 Differentiate between breathing and respiration.

DIFFERENCES
BREATHING RESPIRATION
i) Breathing is defined as Respiration is defined as breaking
the inhaling and exhaling down of food (glucose) in the
of air for the intake of presence of oxygen to release
oxygen and giving out of energy, carbon dioxide and water
CO2.
Respiration takes place in all cells
ii) Breathing takes place
of living organisms.
through mouth and nose.
iii) It has two steps It has two types
a) Inhalation
a) Aerobic respiration
b) exhalation
b) Anaerobic respiration

HOMEWORK Q/ANS
Q.1What are the three processes of aerobic respiration involves in the
human body?

A. THE THREE PROCESSES OF AEROBIC RESPIRATION

1) Oxygen is taken to the cells of the body by blood

2) Energy is released by the reaction of of dissolved food with oxygen.

3) CO2 and H2O are taken back to be breathed out into air

Q2. Why is it better to breathe through your nose than through your
mouth?
A. It is better to breathe through nose than mouth because of the
following reasons
i) CILIA
Germs and dust particles are filtered out by the tiny hairs inside
the nose called cilia
ii) BLOOD VESSELS
The air is warmed by the blood vessels in the nose.
iii) MUCUS
The air is moistened by the slimy mucus produced by its lining.

Q.3 How cold is caused? How do you feel when you have a cold?

A. CAUSES OF COLD:

Cold is caused by the viruses which invade the cell lining the nose and
throat.

SYMPTOMS
i) Fever
ii) Sneezing
iii) Sore throat
iv) Runny nose

CURE:
i) By taking medicines
ii) By taking more water
iii) Fresh air
Q4. What are the bad effects of using nicotine?

A.BAD EFFECTS OF USING NICOTINE:

This drug is addictive and it;

i) Speed up the heart beat

ii) Narrows the arteries
iii) Cause high blood pressure

LONG Q/ANS
Q1. What are the similarities and differences between burning and
respiration?

A. SIMILARITIES BETWEEN BURNING AND RESPIRATION

i) Both are energy producing reactions.
ii) Both takes place in the presence of oxygen.
iii) In both reactions carbon dioxide is released.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BURNING AND RESPIRATION

Q2.Explain the part played by the diaphragm and intercostals muscles in

breathing.

A. DIAPHRAGM
It is a thick dome-shaped sheet of muscles. It is located at the bottom
of chest cavity.

INTER COSTAL MUSCLES

The muscles found between the ribs are called inter costal muscles
A.ROLE OF DIAPHRAGM AND INTERCOSTAL MUSCLES IN
BREATHING
BREATHING
Breathing is defined as the inhalation of air for the intake of oxygen and
exhalation of carbon dioxide.

The volume of chest cavity changes during breathing.

This change is brought about by diaphragm and intercostals muscles.

There role during breathing are as follow:

a) INHALATION
i) The diaphragm contract and becomes flat instead of its dome
shape.
ii) The ribs move upward by contraction of intercostals muscles.
iii) Due to these reasons the volume of chest cavity increases and
air (O2) rushed into lungs.

b) EXHALATION
i) The muscle of diaphragm relaxes and become dome shaped.
ii) Ribs move down ward by the contraction of intercostals
muscles.
iii) Due to these reasons volume of the chest cavity decreases and
air (CO2) expand out from the lungs to the atmosphere.

Q3. In your own words explain how smoking can damage our health.

A. SMOKING TOBACCO DAMAGE OUR HEALTH

Smoking tobacco can damage our health because:
i) Smoking tobacco contains 300 different chemicals
ii) It contains a drug called Nicotine.
iii) Nicotine covers the lining of the lungs and make then unable to take
oxygen.
iv) Nicotine also speeds up the heart beat and narrows the arteries.
v) Tobacco smoke also contain a poisonous gas carbon monoxide
vi) This gas joins up with the red blood cells which stops oxygen carry
around the body.
vii) It causes lung cancer.
viii) Tobacco smoke narrow the bronchioles due to which the cilia stops
beating and produce more amount of mucus.
ix) Collection of mucus makes the smokers cough.
x) It also weakens the walls of alveoli and reduced the surface area of
the lungs.
xi) The damage alveoli cannot oxygenate the blood properly and makes
the smoker fall in a disease called emphysema.
xii)

All these things of tobacco damage our health so we should take care
of it.

Q4. What is asthma? What are the causes of asthma?

A. ASTHMA
A condition in which air ways become narrower and swell up and
produce extra amount of mucus which make breathing difficult

CAUSES OF ASTHMA
These are as follow;

i) Air born substances such as pollutant and dust etc

ii) Respiratory infection such as common cold
iii) Physical activities (exercise induced asthma)
iv) Fumes at work
v) Certain medication
vi) Use of wine and drugs
vii) Caused by genetics problems
