Short story

The Four Smart students

One night four college students were out partying late night and didn’t study for the test which was
scheduled for the next day. In the morning, they thought of a plan. They made themselves look dirty
with grease and dirt. Then they went to the Dean and said they had gone out to a wedding last night and
on their way back the tire of their car burst and they had to push the car all the way back. So they were
in no condition to take the test.

The Dean thought for a minute and said they can have the re-test after 3 days. They thanked him and
said they will be ready by that time.

On the third day, they appeared before the Dean. The Dean said that as this was a Special Condition
Test, all four were required to sit in separate classrooms for the test. They all agreed as they had
prepared well in the last 3 days.

The Test consisted of only 2 questions with the total of 100 Points.

1) Your Name __________ (1 Points)

2) Which tire burst? __________ (99 Points)

Options – (a) Front Left (b) Front Right (c) Back Left (d) Back Right

Question:

Answer the following questions based on your own understanding.

1. To be accountable means to be responsible towards your action and decision. Given the chance that
you are one of the four students who went to the party despite of having a major examination on the
next day. What will be your decision in this form of situation? Explain.

I will not come to the party. No matter how fun it is, taking the exam seriously is one of our
responsibility as a student. We can have fun all we want once we finish the exam.

2. If you were the Dean in that scenario, how will you respond in this kind of action?

If their answers don’t match I will not let them take take the proper exam. They should take the
consequences of their decisions.

3. In view of the fact that there is a high possibility of failing. What do you think is the other reason why
they ended-up doing that decision?

Probably peer pressure, Maybe there are other students present at the party. As they don’t
want to feel left out they attended the party as well.

1. What if you witnessed those popular girls putting lipstick stain on the bathroom mirror. Will you
directly reported them to your academic head? Why or Why not?

No, based on my personality i’ll probably just mind my own business. However, I will tell it to
someone who I know would report it to the academic head.

2. In that short video clip, who do you think is accountable, the academic head, the parents of the
children, the janitor or the students themselves?

The students, the academic head already told them to stop putting the lipstick stain on the
mirror but they still did it regardless.

3. Based on the short video clip, what habit/s of a highly accountable person is/are lacking?

They lack self-discipline, they still did it because they think its fun. Even when the academic head
told them off, even though they knew that someone is troubled with their actions.

4. Why do you think many people are not accountable? Give two reasons and explain how to actually
change that kind of mindset.

Many people are not held accountable because they avoid taking responsibility for their actions.
While growing up we learned to be accountable to someone else. As a child, we must do what our
parents tell us or we get punish. As a student, we must do what are teachers tell us or we will fail. Our
accountability for our actions are driven by complying with the demands of others. We should learn how
to be accountable for ourselves for us to understand the consequences of our actions and how to
improve ourselves with it.
