• Metrology: Engineering metrology is defined as the measurements of dimensions such as

length, thickness, diameter, taper, angle, flatness, profile.

• Large-Scale Metrology (LSM), defines measurement processes that are used in the field of
production technology for geometric inspection, for objects in which the linear dimensions
vary from one meter to hundreds of meters in linear dimension.

• Traditionally, measurements have been made after the part has been produced, an
approach known as postprocess inspection. Today, measurements are being made while the
part is produced on the machine, an approach known as in-process, online or real time
inspection.

• Today, an extremely accurate measurement is based on speed of light in a vacuum, which is

calculated by multiplying the wavelength of the standardized infrared beam of a laser by its
frequency.
