Introduction

1.1: History of Music in Bangladesh:

The history of music in Bangladesh is very old. Bangladesh is traditionally very rich in its
musical heritage. From the ancient times, music documented the lives of the people and
was widely patronized by the rulers.A lot of good musicians born in Bangladesh and
passed away. In present times there are also a number of good musicians. There are a lot
of verities in our music. Different types of music are created here. Jari, Shari, Vatiali,
Vawaia, Lalon giti etc are some of them. Lalon shah, Shiraj Shai, a lot of unknown Bauls,
Najrul Islam are the very some of the greatest musicians this country has produced. At
the mid eighties a new type of music has been introduced in Bangladesh, which is called
the Band music. This was typically followed from the western rock music. Shiraj Shai
and Ajam khan are the two names who established the flow of this type of music in
Bangladesh. At the mid nineties band music has reached at its top craze. A lot of new
band groups are created then. L.R.B, Feelings, Warfaze, Aurthohin etc are some of the
bands those were raised. After the beginning of the new century the 21st century the band
music got out lightly from the limelight because of the western music and the Hindi
music although the starting of the band music was from the western touch. It has
happened because of the new generation that grew up. They fell for the western rock
music and the Hindi Bollywood songs.

1.2: Present Situation and of Music in Bangladesh:

At present days some of the band groups and some other type of music were reborn in
Bangladesh. Band music is very popular among the youth of Bangladesh. This kind of
music was introduced in Bangladesh more than thirty years ago and had been gradually
winning adherents among the younger generation. Now it is on the way to being accepted
as a part of the country’s cultural heritage. Some new bands and singers have been
introduced in recent years. These guys are trying to create something different and new
following the old music types. Now days there are a lot of concert and underground
concerts are arranged. And it is arranged regularly. The young generation is crazy about
this kind of concerts. This concert has some good effects and also has some very bad
effects. From our research what we have tried to find out that the trend of music among
the young generation. How music affects their personal and social life.

CHAPTER 2
Results and Analysis
2.1 Musical Instruments

Bangladesh has a good number of musical instruments originally of her own. Originally
country musical instruments include Basi(Bamboo flute), Dhol(Wooden drum), Ektara,
Dotara, Mandira, Khanjani, Sarinda, etc. now a days western musical instruments are
Guiter, Saxophone, Drums, Synthesizer are being used alongside country musical
instruments.

2.2 Development of Bangla music

Music, though universal, must have some limitations mostly in the third world countries,
as far as the western music is concerned. Music appeals to everyone in this world, though
varied culture represents or expresses varied music, basically their own. Coming from the
roots, western world created their own, which has an immense following around the
world through different media, record companies and lately through Cable TV Network,
western music is catching the imagination of the people of different cultural groups.

Root music expressed, by varied cultural groups, speaks of the same language, and
meaning everywhere. But in this ever changing world, this root expression has also been
taking a turn from the day it has set its foot on the road to success. Basic changes in the
instruments have been affected throughout the world especially from the 60's through
70's, and the change/development is still going on everywhere. Considering western
world to be at the top of the hills, whatever runs down is usually stuck either in the
middle or at the bottom of the hills where the second or third world resides. So far,
everything ranging from a fork to jeans has been rolling down the hill and has been
received in the middle or at the bottom of the hill gleefully by the third world, the rest in
the form of language intermingled with all its variation including music, followed suit
slowly but steadily. Thus, the cultural structure obviously has been changing music along
with it, the root instruments replaced by the instruments from the top of the hill, the
western ones slowly taking root in different cultures ranging from Asia to Africa.
Bangladesh, being one of the countries in Asia, has also been affected by this
effervescent intrusion. 'Ak tara' and 'Dotara' have already been replaced by guitar,
keyboards, slowly overpowering harmonium and 'drums' doing the same to 'Tabla'. With
the inclusion of intruding instruments, the vocal expression has also been changing, the
big cultural tradition slowly breaking down into so many cultural groups, as bands these
days, strapping guitars and banging drums, people are singing in two different languages,
both in English and Bangla. Numerous groups of listeners and viewers followed the scene
all over the country, finally bringing in sponsors to tap it.

2
Qamrul Hasan said that the band music during the last thirty years has acquired a strong
foundation in Bangladesh. ‘We should not ignore this genre of music,’ he continued,
‘during this time of globalization the Bangladeshi band music should be practiced
mingling local heritage with modern instruments.’ He hoped for further development of
band music in Bangladesh and assured that the academy would continue its support in
promoting band music among the young people of the country. Our classical music, folk
music, Robindra Songit and Nazrul geeti also developed very much now a day. This
music’s are our pedestal music and our prevalent heritage.

Overall development, therefore, is essential in the music scene, starting the younger
generation. Sponsors can play a vital role here by filling the void which is what some of
them are doing right now with various planned programmer. Long term plan can be
drawn by sponsors so that the younger people, through regular exposure, can benefit
most, luring the experienced hands to help the juniors at the same time.

2.3 Modernization of Bangla music

Modernization of Bengla music occurred at different times and most of these

modernization processes happened independently of western influence. Most notable of
these changes were:

 Popularity of folk music of Sufi genres: introduction of non-Hindu notions and

philosophy in music
 Works of Rabindranath Tagore, a Nobel Laureate poet: introduction of variations
of classical music to music
 Works of Kazi Nazrul Islam: introduction of complicated musical composition
and use of music as a revolutionary tool
 Modernization of folk music: bringing folk music into mainstream
 Fusion work: fusion of traditional music with electronic instruments and Western
work to revitalize and re-popularise Bangla music in a society increasingly
overwhelmed by the West

2.4 Teenagers Listening to Music

 All teenagers love music it’s often music you hate, played at maximum decibels.
 Music is a shared bond between teenagers. It gives them an identity, a feeling of
belonging to a group.
 Try to be reasonable. If you shout "Turn off that ghastly noise" your teenager will
feel it's an attack on them because they love and identify with the music strongly.
 Try to understand their music, even if you don't like it.
 Discuss what volume you can stand. Suggest they play it loudly when you and the
neighbors are out.
 Before your child goes to rock concerts, explain about the dangers of deafness and
give them ear plugs.

2.5 Impact of Music for Teenagers

Music lyrics have undergone dramatic changes since the introduction of rock music more
than 40 years ago. This is an issue of vital interest and concern for parents and
pediatricians. During the past four decades, rock music lyrics have become increasingly
explicit—particularly with reference to sex, drugs, and violence. Recently, heavy metal
and "Gangsta rap" music lyrics have elicited the greatest concern. In some cases lyrics
communicate potentially harmful health messages. Such lyrics are of special concern in
today's environment, which poses unprecedented threats to the health and well-being of
adolescents. Pregnancy, drug use, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (and other
sexually transmitted diseases), injuries, homicide, and suicide have all become part of the
landscape of everyday life for many American teens.

The effect of music to elicit emotion and mood and the ability of words to stimulate and
label feelings, a picture emerges of the powerful combination of words, rhythm, and
music. Add to the mix a vulnerable teenage psyche and we have a recipe for considerable
influence. Let’s look at seven recent reports and studies and see what these different
perspectives add up to. Significant associations with suicidal thoughts, acts of deliberate
self-harm, depression, delinquency, drug taking, and family dysfunction appeared to exist
with those respondents who preferred rock or heavy metal. Feeling sadder after listening
to the rock or heavy metal appeared to distinguish the most disturbed group

At the same time, music is important to teenagers' identity and helps them define
important social and sub cultural boundaries. The results of one survey of 2760 14-to 16-
year-olds in 10 different southeastern cities showed that that they listened to music an
average of 40 hours per week. One Swedish study found that adolescents who developed
an early interest in rock music were more likely to be influenced by their peers and less
influenced by their parents than older adolescents. To date, no studies have documented a
cause-and-effect relationship between sexually explicit or violent lyrics and adverse
behavioral effects. A possible explanation for this lack of finding is that teenagers often
do not know the lyrics or fully comprehend their meaning. For example, in one study only
30% of teenagers knew the lyrics to their favorite songs, and their comprehension varied
greatly. “Music has strong effects on behavior and can do so by communicating moods
and emotions.” As sound researcher N. M. Weinberger notes, numerous studies attest to
music’s powerful influence on mood and emotion. Music may provide a form of
nonverbal communication whose meaning is ineffable—it cannot be captured in words.
Perhaps music exists because of the need for expression of emotions that “can only
crudely be measured or described in words..

CHAPTER 4

Conclusion

We have a wealthy music inheritance. From the very prehistoric time we hear the music.
Almost all people mainly the teenagers like the music most. But we have to think about
music which is appropriate for the teenagers. Because vicious kind of music can hamper
their study, state of mind or destruct them physically. Music can rapidly and powerfully
set moods and do so in a way not as easily attained by other means. (Even if adequate to
the task, the written word cannot do so as quickly and, when used, often must convey a
particular setting, content and visual imagery that itself interferes with or shifts
thoughts.)”. Music would define it as a psychological tool that intentionally uses
language to paint conscious and subconscious images for a specific therapeutic effect.
This methodology can be used for relaxation, for self-induced healing, or in a
psychotherapeutic context. When words are used in conjunction with music that
complements the imagery, a very powerful match of verbal and nonverbal cues is sent to
the brain. Quite often the creation of a trance state facilitates a deeper induction of the
guided imagery.

4.1 What to do?

 Most of the teenagers like the modern music, band music.

 Expose teenagers to a broad range of music from an early age. For kids, listening
to music from around the world can lead to an adventure of discovery about other
countries and cultures.
 Be knowledgeable about the lyrics of your children's music.
 Be explicit about your family's values and what you will and will not allow your
child to listen to.
 Keep lines of communication open; ask why they enjoy this music.
 Listening to heavy metal music is not in itself causing for alarm, but if other
isolating and risk factors emerge in your child's life.
 Encourage use of earplugs at rock concerts. Explain the effects of loud music on
hearing.
