ACTIVE VOICE AND PASSIVE VOICE

- REVIEW ACTIVE VOICE:

The Active voice focuses in THE SUBJECT and not in THE OBJECT of the sentence. In the active
voice you know who performs the action of the verb.

For example: “John painted the old house” John did the action.

- “Karen was preparing the juice fruit” = In this sentence, a person (KAREN) does something (was
preparing juice). We know who did the action.

- “They leave bicycles in the parking lot”. = Here, some people (THEY) do something (leave the bicycles
in the parking lot). We probably don´t know them, but we know that a group of people did the action.

- REVIEW PASSIVE VOICE:

The Passive voice is used when we want to focus on THE OBJECT of the sentence and not on THE
SUBJECT, because it’s not important or it is unknown.
Example: “The old house was painted” What matters is the action on the object, not the subject.

- “A chocolate cake was baked for my birthday party” = What matters here is that there is a cake for
the party; it doesn´t matter who did it.
- “The situation is being discussed in the meeting” = Here, what it is important is that the situation is
being discussed and not who are discussing about it.

- Thisis the process we do to change an active voice sentence into a

passive one:

(present simple)

(past simple)
FUTURE WILL

Active Voice I will write a long letter.

(future form)

Passive Voice A long letter will be written by me.

to be (future) past participle
