2. Planning…
There are three components to help you plan your lessons: the Teacher’s Edition,
the Program Resources and Teacher Express.
On-Line
Planning Key Components
Teacher’s Edition…
The TE has a two-page planning
spread at the beginning of each
chapter.
It covers the following:
-Section and Section Objectives
-Pacing Guide
-Standards
-Activities and Labs
-Program Resources
-Problems and Assessment

There is also a “Planning Key”

to help you find the resources, a
list of “On-line Resources” a
“Materials List” for labs and List
of available “Chapter
Assessment” Materials for Chapter
Activities and Labs Assessment
Notice that every resource listed will indicate which
students within your diverse classroom the resource is
aimed towards.

This is one feature in PH Chemistry to help you

differentiate instruction according to ability levels.

When you open your TE, you’ll

see that the Student’s Edition is
embedded in the center of the
TE and is surrounded by
information and suggestions Student’s
for Teaching and Learning.
Edition
Each section is built around a
lesson framework with ways to
“Engage” your students,
“Explore” the content and
“Assess” learning.

You’ll find suggestions for incorporating the built-in reading support, building
science skills, using the visuals, differentiating instruction, using community
resources, etc… as well as all the answers to questions encountered in the text.

This is where the lesson planning really starts. Read all of the entries in the wrap-
around and decide which ones will work best for you and your classes. Plan the
sequence you’d like to follow when using these resources with your class. Now it’s
time to go on to the lesson plans and the lesson planner.
2
Teaching Resources…
There are lesson plans, for each section, available in the
Lesson Plan book.

These lesson plans follow the same three step approach

found in the Teacher’s Edition… Focus, Instruct, Assess.

A brief summary of suggested activities are found under

each heading.

Notice that the resources, listed on the right, also indicate

the L1, L2 or L3 Student Ability Level as found in the TE.
Teacher Express…
Teacher Express has a Lesson Planner, an electronic copy of the Teacher’s Edition,
pdf files of all program print resources, links to all Web Resources and the ExamView
Test Generator.

Teacher Express consists of two CDs. The “Installation” CD and the “Resources”
CD. The first thing you’ll want to do is install the program on your computer.

The lesson plans are completely editable. All changes are automatically saved.

You have links to all the program resources, so there’s no need to carry any books
with you to do lesson planning at home.

You will have to insert the “Resource” CD into your computer to access the print
resources. However, it is possible to click and drag the resources folder and copy all
the resources on your computer so you no longer need the CD.

3. Teaching…
PH Chemistry provides many options for you to use in your classroom. We won’t try
to provide a lock-step method for using these materials, because the ways to will
incorporate the Reading Support, Visuals, Inquiry Strand and Print and Electronic
Resources are as diverse as the teachers and students using the program.

Instead, we’ll introduce a few of the available options to get you started and show
how the various features tie the program together. As you continue to use Prentice
Hall Chemistry and dig deeper into the extensive resource package, you’ll expand
your usage of materials well beyond the scope of this Pilot Guide.

Student Edition…
Turn to the beginning of any chapter in PH
Chemistry and the first thing you’ll see is an
“Inquiry Activity”.

The activity is there to engage your students and have

them interact with the content before they start reading
about it.

Every Section in PH
Chemistry starts with the
“Guide for Reading”.
It consists of…

“Key Concepts” (written as

student-friendly questions)

A list of “Vocabulary” words

A “Reading Strategy” to help

students become better
readers and retain more of
what they are reading

Read the first “Key Concept”…

Now look through the text. Notice how some of the sentences are
bold-faced and have the same “Key” icon at the beginning…

We do that so
even your
weakest readers
can find the “Key
Concepts”* * Ask your students to highlight the
important information in any other book, and
they’ll highlight just about everything!
5
Guided Reading and Study…
While your students are reading, these are two
resource books they might find useful.

They have Section Summaries, Questions,

Diagrams, Charts and Graphic Organizers for
students to complete so reading becomes an
active process.

When your students have

finished the section, we re-
visit the “Key Concepts”,
provide a range of questions
(including “Critical Thinking”)
and an extension activity, all
within the Section
Assessment.

In addition, the Teaching

Resources have a variety of
Vocabulary, Review and
Reinforcement, Enrichment
and other activity worksheets.

We’ve looked at the Inquiry Activities at the And “Small Scale Lab” at the end of
beginning of the chapter. You’ll also find each chapter.
“Quick Labs” in each chapter…

Looking for more labs?

Lab Manual
There are additional labs
and Teacher Demos in the
wrap-around resources of
the TE.
PH Chemistry also has…
Small-Scale Lab Manual
Traditional Lab Manual
Probeware Lab Manual

6
Virtual Chem Lab…
Virtual Chem Lab is an interactive piece produced by
Brian Woodfield at BYU. It comes in single-user and
network versions and includes a lab manual with 30
investigations for PH Chemistry.
Your students can complete the labs from the manual,
select prepared labs from a clipboard found in each lab
“prep room” or design their own labs.

Problem Solving…
New Chemistry Problems are introduced
in the text with a solved example, using a
three step approach…
Analyze, Calculate, Evaluate.

Then, students are given some Practice

Problems to try out the new skill.

Additional practice is available in the

Interactive On-line Student Edition using
Chem ASAP. The ASAP stands for…
Animations, Simulations, Assessment
and Problem-Solving.

This symbol tells you

there is an ASAP
component available.

7
Web Codes…

Every few pages, your students will

see an icon like the one below.

It will direct them to “Go On-Line”

at www.phschool.com and provides
them with a code they’ll need to
access the web asset.
When they get to
our website, they
enter the “Web
Code” in the
place shown and
click “Go”.

They will automatically be taken to

the web component.

Web Content includes: Active Art (brings the text artwork alive), SciLinks (safe web
content administered by the NSTA), Interactive Diagrams, Puzzles, Interactive tests
for every chapter, and a variety of other resources.

Pearson Successnet…

The entire Student Edition is on-line
