Answer the following discussion questions and submit through e-mail.
1. Explain why separate storm sewers and sanitary sewers are preferred over combined
sewers.
Answer:
Separate/Sanitary sewers are preferred over combined sewers because separate/
sanitary sewers are far more efficient during wet weather, as storm water can be directly
deposited to a nearby water body instead of being transferred to a sewage treatment plant.
This helps prevent storm water from backing up and overflowing onto roads and other sensitive
areas while combined sewers during periods of heavy rainfall or excessive snowmelt, vast
amounts of untreated water is deposited in nearby lakes, rivers, or oceans. This can lead to
various negative impacts on the environment, such as chemical runoff and other various
pollutants being introduced to aquatic ecosystems.

2. Explain the purpose of a lift station.

Answer:
A wastewater lift station is a pumping station that moves wastewater from a lower
elevation to a higher elevation. The benefit of using a lift station in a sewage collection system
is that it saves a substantial amount of money in excavation costs, which involves digging for
sewer pipes.
