Grade 12-STEM2 Lesson 1: Literary Approaches

THE GODS WE WORSHIP LIVE NEXT DOOR

(MARXISM)

In this poem, I choose Marxism as their literary approach to interpret this piece. In my
opinion, the “gods” that they talking about in the piece is the people who has greater state in life
like politics and wealthy people. It is like slavery because we worship them because they are
greater than us. The poor people are portrayed as inferior to the rich people. This shows that the
gods we worship are not really gods, they are people who has to be sick and mortal. The poem
reminded us the Spanish colonization in the Philippines, where the poor families are separated to
the wealthy families. One of the evidence of how Spaniards treated us is discrimination. They
have money so they can do whatever they want to do such as naming the street with their names.
We don’t need to be like them, and we will never be like them. We need to use what we have to
help other, not to gain advantage to them. They are also humans that has mortal body, like us.
