EE 108: TEACHING MATH IN THE INTERMEDIATE GRADES
I. VISION AND MISSION:

III. BEED PROGRAM OUTCOMES


The Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) is a four-year degree program designed to prepare the would-be teachers. The program combines both theory and
practice in order to equip them with the necessary knowledge, skills attitudes, and values an elementary teacher needs. The BEED program trains would-be teachers to facilitate
the learning of the different learning areas.

After finishing the BEED program, the graduates should be able to:
Knowledge:

1. Demonstrate basic and higher level of literacy, communication, numeracy, critical thinking, learning skills needed for higher learning;
2. Facilitate learning in elementary/secondary education guided by principles and methods of facilitating learning;
3. Integrate meaningfully and comprehensively biblical principles to the knowledge of the subject matter to real life situations of learners;
4. Apply the latest developments in the field of elementary/secondary education;

Skills:

1. Apply a wide range of teaching and facilitating process skills including curriculum development, materials development, educational assessment, and teaching
approaches;
2. Innovate on effective alternative teaching and learning approaches, methodologies, and strategies to improve student learning;
3. Facilitate meaningful learning of diverse types of learners in diverse types of learning environments, using a wide range of teaching knowledge and skills;
4. Communicate effectively in oral and in written forms in both English and Filipino;
5. Participate in generation of new knowledge and development projects;

IV. FIELD OF STUDY OUTCOMES (BEED)

The bachelor of Elementary Education is a degree program designed to prepare students for becoming Elementary School Teachers. Graduates of this program are
expected to be well-equipped with necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that will aid them to facilitate the teaching-learning process of any subject for the primary
level.

At the end of the program, BEED graduates should be able to:


a. Demonstrate in depth understanding in diversity of learners in various learning areas;
b. Manifest meaningful and comprehensive pedagogical content knowledge of the different subject areas;
c. Utilize appropriate assessment and evaluation tools to measure learning outcomes;
d. Manifest skills in communication, higher order thinking skills and use of tools and technology to accelerate learning and teaching;
e. Demonstrate positive attributes of a model teacher, both as an individual and as professional;
f. Manifest a desire to continuously personal and professional development; and
g. Integrate biblical principles in the practice of the profession in the classroom subject teaching.

V. COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE TITLE: Teaching Math in the Intermediate Grades

COURSE CODE: EE 108

COURSE DESCRIPTION: As preparation for teaching in the intermediate grades, this course emphasizes the integration of technological pedagogical content knowledge that
includes topics on rational numbers, measurement, geometric figures, pre-algebra concepts, application of simple probability and data analysis. This course is capped with
microteaching that utilizes appropriate teaching strategies for the development of critical and problem solving, reasoning, communicating, making corrections, representations
and decisions in real life situations.

COURSE CREDITS: 3 units

CONTACT HOURS: One Semester (3Hours/Week)

PRE-REQUISITE: None

COURSE OUTCOMES: In the context of the specific field of specialization, the students will be able to:

1. To understand and be able to apply the mathematics essential to successful teaching in the elementary school classroom.
2. To acquire a foundation in geometry and measurement, statistics, counting, and probability.
3. To gain skill in problem solving and critical thinking.
VI. Course Outline

 Geometric Figures: Definitions, Properties, and Relationships. Approximate time spent: 15%


o Build basic vocabulary of geometric figures
o Analyze properties of two and three dimensional figures
o Explore relationships between lines, planes, polygons, and solids
 Geometry and Measurement. Approximate time spent: 30%
o Investigate standard and nonstandard units of measure
o Explore linear measurement: perimeter, circumference
o Explore area of regular and irregular shapes
o Use the Pythagorean Theorem appropriately
o Explore measures of surface area and volume: lateral surface area, base, height, slant height
o Investigate temperature as a form of measurement
 Geometry of Congruence, Similarity, and Transformations. Approximate time spent: 20%
o Investigate properties of congruent and similar figures
o Explore ratio and proportion as applied to geometric figures
o Perform basic constructions using Mira, paper folding, compass, straightedge, and technology (when applicable)
o Perform rigid and similarity transformations on a variety of figures
o Explore properties and outcomes of rigid transformations
o Explore types of symmetry
 Statistics. Approximate time spent: 15%
o Collect, organize, analyze, and present real data
o Utilize appropriate types of graphs for various data types
o Interpret graphs and tables
o Investigate the use of graphs to distort statistics
o Analyze measures of central tendency and dispersion
 Counting Principles and Probability. Approximate time spent: 15%
o Explore basic counting principles
o Understand and utilize factorial notation
o Explore the language of uncertainty: sample space, outcome, event, equally likely, mutually exclusive events, certain and impossible events
o Investigate experimental probability: simulation
o Determine Expected Value
