Become a TED speaker for a day 
Discover and explore great ideas

Soon, you will be giving your first TED talk. Therefore, you'll
do research and develop your ideas worth sharing.

WHAT IS A TED TALK?

A showcase for speakers presenting well-formed ideas under 18 minutes. Our TED
talks will take us between 2 and 5 minutes.

Remember! ​SHORT CHUNKS + ONE SUBJECT AT A TIME = HAPPY AUDIENCE

STEP BY STEP:

1. IDENTIFY YOUR PASSION

Identify an idea you are passionate about. Discuss why it matters most to you.
You may come up with SOMETHING NEW or SOMETHING SURPRISING. You may
also CHALLENGE A BELIEF or explore an OLD IDEA IN A NEW LIGHT.

2. DEVELOP YOUR IDEA

a. What makes a good idea for a talk? Take evidence or observations and
draw a larger conclusion.
b. Check your facts, use reliable sources & consult with other experts.
c. Is your idea ready? Write it down in one or two sentences :

d. Then, ask yourself these questions:
1. Is my idea new?
2. Is it interesting?
3. Is it factual and realistic?
e. Discuss it with someone you respect and ask those three questions of
them.
f. Discuss your idea with you teacher ​on ……………………………………...

3. SHAPE YOUR IDEA : MAKE AN OUTLINE AND SCRIPT

Structure:
a. Make your audience care by using a relatable example or intriguing idea.
b. Explain your idea clearly and with conviction.
c. Describe your evidence.
d. Call to action: the how and why of implementing your idea.
e. Show the script to your teacher ​on ……………………………………...
4. CREATE SLIDES

This is not compulsory. However, if you do decide to create slides, keep it


simple! Make sure the slides help clarify information and not distract the
audience!

a. You may add photos and/or infographics. NOTE! You must use images that you
own or have permission to use.
b. Cover one point per slide.
c. Use as little text as possible.
d. Use a font size of 42 or larger.

5. REHEARSE, REHEARSE, REHEARSE!

At first, you can share your ideas with people you love, or even with people you
fear. You might also want to rehearse in front of small and then larger groups.
Accept criticism, learn from it and keep rehearsingª.

TIPS!

a. Maintain a natural voice as if you were having a one-to-one conversation


b. Posture: practise standing still .
c. Timing: time yourself!

6. STAGE TIME
