SUMMARY

In this experiment, Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger was used. The objectives of this experiment
are to evaluate and study the performance of the shell and tube heat exchanger at various
operating conditions and to determine the heat load, log mean temperature difference (LMTD),
overall heat transfer coefficient. The equipment that involved in this experiment are Shell and
Tube Heat Exchanger, Heat Load, Log Mean Temperature Difference (LMTD), and Overall
Heat Transfer Coefficient U. The experiment begun with 70°C set to the heater and the HW and
CW were adjusted. The result in the table shows the different in CW, HW, temperature and
pressure inlet and outlet by repeating the procedure Run 1 and Run 4. All four set of Table 1
shows that the pressure drop of DP Tube is higher that the pressure drops of DP Shell. The
temperature of all four experiments shown that cold water of T1 is lower than T2 and for the hot
water, the temperature for T1 is higher than the temperature of T2. For table 2, it has shown the
temperature change between CW and HW which both of CW and HW temperature has
decreasing. The calculation of QC and QH has been made which by the theory of the heat of the
hot water must be equal to the heat that absorbed by the cold water, QH=QC. Some error might
be occurred during the experiment as QC ≠ QH. The LMTD has been calculated which is
14.2740 and the overall heat transfer coefficient, U for the heat exchanger that given is 5.0242.
the flowrate of the water will affect the overall heat transfer coefficient, U and when the area is
constant, the heat transfer coefficient will increase so does the flowrate. It was observed that the
trend of the result agrees with the theory.
