Canon MF Update Tool

for Windows 98 SE/Me


User’s Guide (Web Edition)
Please read this guide before using the software.
Introduction

Canon MF Update Tool is used to update the firmware for the select models of Canon
multi-function printers.
To update the firmware, prepare the following:
• Computer
• Canon MF Update Tool (Download from the Web site where this manual is located.)

• The screens displayed while using this tool may differ depending on your
operating system.
In this document, the screens from Windows 98 SE are used.

• The illustrations displayed in the screens may differ depending on the model
you are using.
In this document, the illustrations of MF 5700 Series are used.

Preparation
Before starting the update, perform the following steps to prepare the machine
and your computer:
IMPORTANT
Before updating, the MF driver must be installed on your computer.
For information on installing the MF driver, refer to the documentation that comes with
the machine.

1 Ensure that In Use/Memory indicator on the operation panel of the


machine is not lit or blinking. If it is, wait until all the jobs (i.e., sending
and receiving faxes, copying, printing, and/or scanning) are finished,
and then confirm that In Use/Memory indicator is turned off.

2 Ensure that Alarm indicator on the operation panel is not blinking. If In


Use/Memory indicator is lit and Alarm indicator is blinking at the same
time, jobs are held unfinished in the machine due to an error, possibly
because toner or paper has run out, or the cartridge is not installed.
Check the LCD for an error message and refer to the documentation
that came with the machine to resolve the error.

3 Disconnect ALL the cables from the machine, including the power
cord. Then reconnect ONLY the power cord and wait until the machine
returns to the standby mode.

LINE

4 Restart your computer so that the memory is as “fresh” as possible.


When your computer is fully restarted and ready to use, reconnect the
USB cable directly to the machine and your computer.
NOTE
Do NOT use a USB hub to connect the cable, as it may lead to a connection error.

5 Your machine is now ready for firmware update.

●If Found New Hardware Wizard appears


The MF driver must be installed on your computer.
Click [Cancel] on your computer screen, and then install the driver according to the
documentation that comes with the machine.
After installing the driver, go back to the "Preparation," on p. 3, and perform the pro-
cedure from step 1.

Installing Canon MF Update Tool
IMPORTANT
Ensure that no application program is running on your computer, including anti-virus
software.

1 Double-click Canon MF Update Tool Setup program


(CUT_EZ_Setup98.exe or CUT_EN_Setup98.exe) you downloaded.
2 Click [Next] to proceed.

3 Read the license agreement. Check [I accept the terms in the license
agreement] and click [Next].

4 Select the destination folder to install Canon MF Update Tool into, then
click [Next].

5 Click [Install] to start installation.

6 Click [Finish].

7 Click [OK].

8 Click [Yes], then restart the computer.

9 After restarting the computer, Canon MF Update Tool is started


automatically.
IMPORTANT
If you click [No] in step 8, you must also restart the computer.
After restarting the computer, Canon MF Update Tool is started automatically.

Updating Firmware
Perform the following steps to update the firmware.

1 Confirm that Canon MF Update Tool is started. If not, start it from the
Windows [Start] menu or by clicking the icon on the desktop.

● If starting from the Windows [Start] menu


[Start] - [Programs] - [Canon MF Update Tool] - [Canon MF Update Tool]

If the MF driver is not installed:

The MF driver is not installed


on your computer.
Click [End], then install the MF
driver according to the
documentation that comes with
the machine.

● If [Canon MF Update Tool has already started.] is displayed
Perform the following steps.
1) In the [Canon MF Update Tool has already started.] displayed on your computer
screen, click [OK] to close.

2) From the Windows [Start] menu, click [Programs] - [Canon MF Update Tool] -
[Uninstall], and uninstall Canon MF Update Tool.
3) Perform the steps again in the "Installing Canon MF Update Tool," on p. 6.
4) After performing the step 9 on p. 9, ensure that Canon MF Update Tool starts
properly.

If the firmware is not detected:

The firmware may be deleted


or corrupted. When you click
[OK] to exit the program,
Canon MF Update Tool will be
automatically uninstalled from
your computer. Re-install
Canon MF Update Tool, then
perform the procedure from
step 1 on p. 10.

2 Read and confirm the notes, then click [Start].

It is recommended, though not necessary, to print out speed dialing lists (for
applicable models only) before starting the update procedure.

If the machine is not recognized:

Check if the machine is turned


on, USB cable is properly
connected, or the correct
model is connected. Click [OK]
and follow the instructions on
the screen.

3 Confirm that no document or job is held in the machine, then check
[The memory lamp is turned off.] and click [OK].

If In Use/Memory or Alarm indicator is lit or blinking, see "Preparation," on p. 3.

4 Confirm that telephone and network cables are disconnected, then


click [OK] (for applicable models only).

For instructions on how to disconnect the cables and restart the machine, see steps 3
and 4 on p. 4.

5 Ensure to exit the energy saver mode, then click [OK].

Press [Energy Saver] on the operation panel to exit the energy saver mode.
After exiting the energy saver mode, the Energy Saver key should be turned off.

6 Set the download mode, then click [OK].

Set the download mode on the machine as follows:


- Press [COPY], [Menu], then [#] on the operation panel.
- Press [<] until <#DOWNLOAD> is displayed on the LCD.

7 Press [Set] ([OK]) on the machine, then click [OK].

Confirm that <#DOWNLOAD> is displayed, then press [Set] ([OK]) on the machine.

8 Register the INF file.
IMPORTANT
Depending on your operating system, the procedure for registering INF file differs.
For Windows 98 SE, refer to the step on this page. For Windows Me, refer to the step on
p. 19.

● Windows 98 SE
Make the settings in the hardware wizard by following the instructions
displayed on the [6. Registration of INF file (1)] screen (refer to a to
c below). When you are finished, click [OK].

Make the settings in the hardware wizard by following the steps below.
a Click [Next].

b Confirm that [Search for the best driver for your device.
(Recommended)] is selected, then click [Next].

c Confirm that [CD-ROM drive] and [Specify a location:] are


selected, then click [Next] (See p. 21 for the hardware settings).

● Windows Me
Make the settings in the hardware wizard by following the instructions
displayed on the [6. Registration of INF file (1)] screen (refer to a and
b below). When you are finished, click [OK].

Make the settings in the hardware wizard by following the steps below.
a Select [Specify the location of the driver (Advanced)], then click
[Next].

b Select [Search for the best driver for your device.
(Recommended)], confirm that [Removable Media (Floppy,
CD-ROM...)] and [Specify a location:] are selected, then click
[Next] (See p. 21 for the hardware settings).

9 Perform the registration of INF file, then start downloading the


firmware.
NOTE
The screens shown here are from Windows 98 SE.
The procedure is the same as Windows Me.
Make the settings in the hardware wizard by following the instructions
displayed on the [7. Registration of INF file (2)] screen (refer to a to
c below).

Make the settings in the hardware wizard by following the steps below.
a Click [Next].

b Click [Finish].

c When the registration of INF file is completed, the screen below is


displayed. Click [Cancel] to close the hardware wizard.

When setting for the hardware wizard is finished, go back to
[7. Registration of INF file (2)] screen and click [Start].

10 The firmware update is performed.


IMPORTANT
Do NOT turn off the machine, disconnect the USB cable, or perform any other
operations while the update is in progress.

If the machine is not in download mode:

Confirm that the machine is in


the download mode. Click
[OK], and set the download
mode again by following the
procedures from step 6 on
p. 15.

If the machine firmware is newer than expected:

Updating is not necessary as the


firmware version of the machine
is already higher than the one
included in Canon MF Update
Tool. Click [OK] and follow the
instructions on the screen.

● If Canon MF Update Tool hangs up, you must uninstall and reinstall
it. To do these operations, follow the step below.
1) On the keyboard, press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete] at the same time to restart the
computer forcefully.
IMPORTANT
- If you repeat the step above and the computer still does not restart, press the power
key for at least five seconds to forcefully restart the computer.
- When [Canon MF Update Tool has already started.] screen is displayed on the
computer screen, click [OK] to close the screen.
2) From the Windows [Start] menu, click [Programs] - [Canon MF Update Tool] -
[Uninstall], and uninstall by following the instructions on the screen.
3) Perform the steps again in the "Installing Canon MF Update Tool," on p. 6.

11 When the update is completed, click [OK].

12 Restart the machine by following the instructions displayed on the


[10. After the download] screen, then click [End].

Disconnect the power cord from the machine. Reconnect the
telephone and network cables (for applicable models only).
Wait for at least five seconds, and then restart the machine.

13 When [Are you sure you want to uninstall this product?] is displayed,
click [Yes]. The program will be automatically uninstalled from your
computer.
Congratulations! You have successfully updated the firmware for the
machine.
