Access Control System

The primary goal of an access control system is to preserve and protect confidentiality,
integrity, availability and resources. It is a process by which a user is identified and
granted certain privileges to information or resources. In BMS, access controls are used
by the management to control and monitor all access points and locks within the building.

Features & Functionalities

For the access control, Internet Protocol technology was used. The following are the features
and functionalities of an IP access control solutions:

• PoE capable. An IP reader us PoE capable, meaning; it has power over Ethernet. This
feature makes it very easy to provide battery backed power to the entire system,
including the locks and various types of detectors

• Eliminates controller enclosures.

• No wasted capacity when using IP readers

• Scalable. It is easy for the management to increase the number of access control
points because there is no need to install new main or sub-controllers.

• Failure of one IP reader does not affect any other readers in the system.

Specifications (Set by the Designer)

• The Access Control System will service Basement 1 only.

• There are 7 access points.

• Entry point to Building Administration Office

• Entry point to Security Office

• Entry point to Pump Room

• Entry point to Data Center

• Entry point to Building Systems and Equipment Room

• Connecting Point of Building Administration Office and Data Center

• Connecting Point of Building Systems and Equipment Room and Data Center
• Each access point will have an IP reader connected to the door monitor switch,
Request-to-Exit switch and Enclosure Tamper.

• Work station will be placed in the data center.

• IP readers shall be connected to the work station through Ethernet hub.

Main Parts / Components Used

• Work Station.

The Work Station serves as the administration point of the access control. It contains all
data of each IP reader. The work station chosen is HP Z400 Workstation w/ 475W 85%
Efficient Chassis (FL861UT-PR4). These are the features:

• Intel® Xeon W3505 2.53 4MB/1066 DC CPU

• Genuine Windows Vista® Business 32-bit with downgrade to Windows® XP
Professional custom installed
• HP 2GB (2x1GB) DDR3-1333 ECC RAM
• NVIDIA Quadro FX380 256MB Graphics
• HP 250GB SATA 7200 1st HDD
• HP 16X DVD+-RW SuperMulti SATA 1st Drive
• Includes 3 years parts, 3 years labor, & 3 years onsite service (3/3/3) standard
warranty

• Ethernet Hub
The Ethernet Hub serves as the connection of each IP readers to the Work Station. The
Ethernet Hub is the NETGEAR ProSafe Smart Switches. It fills the gap between
unmanaged and fully managed switches. The family of ProSafe Smart Switches is
designed for growing businesses that want control over their network without the cost
and complexity of a full Layer 2/Layer 3 management implementation. This PoE capable
Smart Switch, FS726TP, provides power and data over the same Cat-5 cable to enable
affordable PoE solutions for mid-sized businesses. Using built-in standards based IEEE
802.3af PoE, the FS726TP offers web-based management including prioritization and
SNMP making it ideal for deploying access points, VoIP phones and IP-based
surveillance cameras. Two built-in Gigabit ports provide fast connections to servers or a
Gigabit-speed backbone. With the utility of 24 10/100 Mbps ports, two copper
10/100/1000 ports and two hot-swappable Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) GBIC
slots for optional fiber connectivity, growing business networks, classrooms and
workgroups can benefit from superior performance and keep up with expanding network
needs. This high performing switch features a non-blocking wire-speed architecture with
an 8.8Gbps switching capacity for maximum data throughput. All 26 RJ-45 ports
automatically negotiate to the highest speed and support Auto Uplink technology to make
the right link.In addition, an intuitive, Web-browser interface offers the simple Smart
Switch management, making it a snap to monitor switch performance, configure ports,
even set up port trunks, VLANs, and traffic prioritization. Alternatively, use SNMP-
based software to manage your Smart Switch. Shipped ready for use straight out of the
box, it delivers switching that's easy to set up and use. NETGEAR ProSafe Smart
Switches are ideal for adding basic management to your unmanaged networks and
extending your managed networks.

• IP Reader
Each IP reader is placed in each access control points. This component is the main
component of the IP access control system. Each IP reader is connected to a Request-to-
Exit Switch, Enclosure Tamper and Main Door Control. The chosen IP reader is the
ER40 HID EdgeReader. IP Access Solution puts control and host interface at the door
right inside the HID contactless smart card reader. The HID EdgeReader ER40 is a
unique iCLASS® reader with an IP-enabled intelligent access control processor and host
interface solution in a single unit. With the same footprint as a traditional reader, the
EdgeReader ER40 provides a complete and full-featured access control
hardware/software infrastructure and contactless smart card capability at “the edge” of
the network for OEM software host systems. A perfect solution for new building
installations, the EdgeReader ER40 requires less wiring and controls every access
function at the door. The cost-effective EdgeReader ER40 is ideally suited for today’s IT-
centric security environment, addressing the requirements for an IP-based solution
incorporating PoE capability that takes advantage of existing CAT-5 cable infrastructure.
The EdgeReader ER40 can be fully integrated into any host system utilizing an IP
network software interface.

• Wires and Cables

The IP reader is connected to the work station through the Ethernet hub using a CAT-5.
Its inputs are coming from: Request-to-Exit Button, Door Monitor and Enclosure
Tamper. Input wiring makes use of 22 AWG.
