Zoom calls have become the new norm when working from home, and the Duke and
Duchess of Cambridge are getting to grips with video conferencing tools just like the
rest of us. This week, the couple used Zoom to make calls to social care workers

across the UK, to thank them for their efforts during the coronavirus outbreak. Kate
recycled a printed pink L.K. Bennett dress she previously wore to watch a polo
match last summer, to join care home residents in Wales for a virtual game of bingo
on Wednesday (20 May), one of the hottest days of the year so far.

Catherine Zoraida to join Prince William on the call to the Shire Hall Care Home in
Cardiff. Throughout the pandemic, Kate has consistently turned to bold colours,
statement-making patterns and eye-catching accessories for the royal couple’s
frequent Zoom appointments. In addition to trying their hand at bingo calling, Kate
and William chatted with both care workers and residents at Shire Hall about how
they’ve been adapting to their changed circumstances during the health crisis. Shire
Hall provides residential, nursing and dementia care and is part of Hallmark Care
Homes, a family-run care provider with 19 care homes across England and Wales.

Earlier this month, Prince William held calls with care workers in England and
Northern Ireland, too. The Duke and key workers on the calls discussed the impact
of the last few months on the mental health and wellbeing of both those receiving
care, and the caregivers themselves. On 6 May, he spoke to members of the Belfast
Health and Social Care Trust to hear how the staff are supporting service users and
the bereaved through these challenging times.

And it didn’t stop there. Last week, Prince William spoke to care workers from
different parts of the sector across England, including those providing care within
people’s homes, personal assistance, and supported living services. “If there’s
hopefully some positivity that comes out of this horrendous time, it is that there’s a
light shone on all of the wonderful things you all do and on the social care sector,
and it allows people to acknowledge, respect and appreciate everything that you are
doing,” he said during the call. The staff spoke about the sacrifices they have made
in order to continue to provide care throughout the coronavirus outbreak –
including isolating from their own families.

Earlier this week, Kate and William used Zoom to record a minute-long message in

their Norfolk home to help mark Mental Health Awareness week. “If you’re
struggling, it’s important to talk about it,” the Duchess said in the broadcast
organised by Radiocentre and Heads Together, the mental health campaign
coordinated by the royal couple’s foundation. It also brought together boxer
Anthony Joshua, footballer Harry Kane, singer Dua Lipa and actor David Tennant
to speak on the topic of mental health. “Or if someone you know is acting
differently, it’s okay to ask how they are,” the Duchess continued. “Use this moment
to send a message.”
