Volleyball Review

Setting
The ball is hit with the finger tips. The fingers should be open and flexed. This skill is
used when the ball is above the head. It may be a pass over the net or more commonly is
used to place the ball high enough for another player to get in the proper position to spike
the ball into the opponent’s court.

Bumping/Digging
This pass is used when the ball is below the chest. It can be used to set the ball up for a
set or spike. The bump/dig can also be used to pass the ball across the net. The hands
must remain together. The ball is contacted at the forearms, between the thumbs and
elbows.

Spiking
The spike is completed by a player who takes two or more steps, jumps into the air, and
contacts the ball with a blunt hit. The hit causes the ball to forcefully cross the net and
into the opponent’s court.

Serving
Underhand: The ball is held in the non-striking hand, feet are shoulder width apart, and
one foot is slightly in front of the other. The striking hand comes under the ball and
makes contact with a closed fist.

Overhand: The ball is tossed overhead with the non-striking arm. The player brings the
striking hand up and meets the ball while it is descending. It is recommended that the ball
is contacted with an open hand, not a closed fist.

Blocking
Using 2 arms, jump upward over the net, but not crossing the plane of the net. The ball
contacts the arms and returns the ball to the opponent’s court. A player can hit the ball
twice in a row if he or she blocks the ball and it returns on his or her side of the court.

Boundaries
When two courts are set up side-by-side, the boundary lines are blue. The dimensions of
the court are 60 feet by 30 feet. The end line is the serving line. The server may stand
anywhere behind the serving line.

Net
The net is 8 feet for men and 7 feet and 4 inches for women. During the game, a player
cannot touch the net without losing the ball and a point. The ball may be played off of the
net.
Rally Scoring
In rally scoring, the games are played to 25 points and teams must win by 2 points. There
is a point awarded on every serve. A team does not have to be serving to score a point. In
a high school volleyball match, a team must win 3 out of 5 games to win the entire match.
If a serve crosses the net and the opposing team lets the ball hit the floor, it is called an
ace. Each team is allowed 3 hits on one side to return the ball to the opposing court.

Volleying
Is the process of passing the ball back and forth across the net.

Players
There are 6 players on the court at a time for one team.

Rotation/Sideout
The teams should rotate in a clockwise pattern. The new server moves from the front
right position to the serving position. The last person to serve moves one position to the
left. If a team is out of order or rotation, the team loses the ball and the opposing team
receives a point.

Common Violations
* Stepping over the line on a serve
