Year 3 Class Bulletin
Term 3 January 2011

Dear Parents / Carers,

I hope you all had a good Christmas Holiday. The children have been working hard so far this term and have
particularly enjoyed the Drumming and Singing Workshops during Music Week. There are lots of important dates
to keep track of this term so please make a note of all the exciting things that are happening!
• Wednesday January 12th – ‘Heroes Breakfast’ 08:00 in the Youth Club – All Male Role models are invited
to accompany children for breakfast. You still have time to sign up this evening at the school reception.
• Wednesday January 12th – all children are invited to dress up as their favourite ‘real life’ hero or
superhero. We are asking for donations of £1 per child. The money raised will be used to purchase
resources for a school in Swaziland, Africa.
• Friday 21st January – Whole school to Streatham Ice Arena ice skating between 10-3pm (Year 1-6).
• Week commencing 24th January: Writing Week.
• Thursday 10th February @ 10:40 YEAR THREE CLASS ASSEMBLY!
• Week commencing 14th February: Drama Week.
• Wednesday 16th February: Parents evening 3-7pm. To provide longer appointment times for parents,
school will be shut at 2.45pm.
• Friday 18th February: Last day of Term 3
• Monday 28th February 2011: First day of Term 4 and start of Maths Week.
• Year 3 will also be visiting Southwark Cathedral for a Stained Glass Window Workshop. Details TBC.

Topics this term Important Notes

Maths topics to be covered this term include:
• Learning to read and write proper fractions
• Building confidence in using number operations
to solve one and two step problems.
• Partitioning two and three digit numbers.
• 2D and 3D Shape.
• Reading the time to the nearest 5 minutes on
an analogue clock.
• Rounding two and three digit numbers to the
nearest 10 or 100.
• Using Practical and written methods to
multiply and divide two-digit numbers.
Please continue to practise the multiplication tables
with your child on a regular basis.
Our Literacy focus this term is non-fiction based.
Children will develop understanding of the features of
information texts and persuasive writing. We will
continue to use the ‘Talk for Writing’ strategy to
develop good listening and speaking skills and teach
children how to prepare well for writing through
gathering of ideas. Our work will be based on this
term’s Topic: ‘What in the World is happening? See
below for further details.
Reading and book bags – You should
have received a letter explaining the
School’s focus on 1:1 reading this year.
Please ensure your child brings their
book bag daily, with a reading book from
home/school library book in it. Please
check your child’s book bag daily for
letters. Don’t use books bags for
anything else, such as storing PE and
water bottles. Books from the school
reading scheme are still changed weekly
on Wednesdays. As always, continue to
listen to your child read, question them
about the text and sign the reading
journal so we know that they have read
their current book and are ready for the
next book in the series. Reading harder
books to your child is also very beneficial
to them. Library day is still on
Thursdays. To borrow a new book,
children must have first returned the
previous one.
Class Novel – We will be reading
‘Treasure Island,’ by Robert Louis
Stevenson.
The Writing Week will have a special focus. The
whole school will be producing writing as a
response to the pictures of Hendrick Avercamp:

Creative Curriculum
(Geography, History, Art, DT).
The title of main theme this term is ‘What in
the world is happening?’ We will be learning
about Polar Regions, Emperor Penguins & other
animals, designing & making magnet games,
desert Region, Global Warming, Hot and cold
weather and Sustainability. Please encourage
your child to find out more about these and
other aspects of our world over the course of
the term. I will be giving out useful web
addresses as part of homework over the next
few weeks.
RE – Christian Symbolism. We will be learning
about important symbols and events in the
Christian Faith and comparing the similarities
and differences between these and those in
other faiths.
Outdoor PE – Striking Games
Indoor PE – Dance
Spanish –every Monday morning. Ask your child
to tell you all the Spanish words and phrases
they have been learning!
Science. The science focus this term will be
Rocks and Soils. We will be learning that
underneath all surfaces is rock which they may
not be able to see, that rocks get broken down
into pebbles and soils which we can often see,
and that there are different sorts of rock with
different characteristics. Pebbles and soils from
different rocks consequently have different
characteristics. There are also useful links to
our Creative Curriculum.
PHSCE – This terms focus is ‘Going for Goals.’
We will be learning about how to strive for a
‘goal’ or target and reach it. A significant part
of the focus is on making children aware that
lots of things in life are not easy to achieve and
take hard work and a focussed mind.
It may be useful to talk with your child about a
goal they would like to achieve and how they
might achieve this. It might be learning or
sports based goal.
Outdoor PE will be on Tuesday
Afternoons. Please make sure they have
tracksuit bottoms and trainers/plimsolls
on this day.
Indoor PE will be on Thursday
Afternoons.
Homework –
Homework will be set each Thursday and
is due back the following Wednesday. It
can be returned earlier if completed. A
number of children have not been
bringing back their homework on time.
Please encourage your child to bring
their homework back on time as well as
take an interest the work they are given
and supervise them when they are doing
it, giving lots of positive praise.
Spellings - Spelling tests will be on
Tuesdays.
Attendance and punctuality
Punctuality and attendance continue to
be problem areas for year three.
Towards the end of last term Year 3
finally managed to receive the weekly
award for best attending class. The
following week they received it for being
the most punctual class! It would be
wonderful if Year 3 received at least one
of these awards every week! Please
make every effort to ensure your child is
on time for school.
The school target is 100% attendance
and punctuality. All children who achieve
the school target of 100% attendance
will be invited to a special end of year
School Disco. Well done to those
children who are on target for 100%
attendance this year!
PPA Arrangements for Term 3
Mrs Iddon will continue to take the class
during my PPA time. She will be doing
Creative Maths and ICT on Wednesdays
Mornings and Creative Curriculum and
Indoor PE on Thursday Afternoons.
