Core Module Reading (7 items)

Developing courses in English for specific purposes - Helen Basturkmen, c2010

Book | Essential | This core book has been chosen as it gives a good introductory
overview of the areas of ESP that need to be covered in section one and has case studies
in section two that give a good overview of the range of teaching and learning contexts
that ESP can cover. These summaries of cases are also a useful way into the main
assignment.

provides a good support to the other book. The main sections on the Language, Learning
and Teaching give a good structure to the think about the main assignment where you
outline a potential course design.

Further Key reading (10 items)

Second language needs analysis - Michael H. Long, 2005
Book | Essential | This gives perhaps the best look at both the theory and practice of
Needs Analysis with a number of samples of actual instruments in appendices. See
chapter 1 for Long's overview of the area. Chapters on Hotel Maids (Ch 4) and on
Footballer's (Ch 7) and an HE based programme in Korea (Ch 8) all give good case studies

Some specific books on Needs Analysis

Introducing needs analysis and English for specific purposes - James Dean Brown, 2016
Book | A good up to date book on needs analysis - has a strong background in
quantitative techniques but has come to the conclusion that qualitative NAs are more
insightful: "I have come to realise that Needs Analyses generally lend themselves to using
qualitative research methods rather than to quantitative methods." (p144)
