The Mark of the Beast

The Mark of the Beast

Well, we have come to the message, of course, that you've all been
waiting for. The message on the mark of the beast. It's so imperative
that you know that this message is built on the foundation that we've
already laid, in messages 1 through 8. If you have missed any of the
messages that we've already studied about the beast (especially
lectures 4, 5, 7, and 8) then I want you to understand that you are
missing a vital link in the logical arguments that bring us to this point.
You see, prophecy comes together like a beautiful picture. It's kind
of like a jigsaw puzzle, and until you get all the pieces together, you're
.not ready to see the whole picture. And when we look at the mark
of the beast, of course, we're looking at the whole picture and
especially its ultimate climax. Unless you have all the pieces together
in your mind already, it will be difficult to understand. We know that
the prophecies of Revelation 13 especially go together with Daniel 7.
And we learned, of course, that Daniel in his vision saw beasts: the
lion, the bear, and the leopard, and then that fourth beast [Daniel 7:7,
8], and that this prophecy was very much tied into the prophecy of
the beast of Revelation 13 and his mark. The beast of Revelation 13
has the mouth of a lion, the feet of a bear, the body of a leopard, and
ten horns [Revelation 13:1,2]. What is John doing in his vision? He's
bringing us down the stream of history: Babylon (represented by the
lion), Medo-Persia (represented by the bear), then came Greece (the
leopard), and finally Rome. And when Rome fell, (remember, the
dragon in the sixth head, indeed, represented Rome), the dragon, or
Rome, was to give his power, his seat, and great authority to the beast.
Daniel is telling us about the rise and fall of empires from his day
down to our day. We have discovered all of these great truths. In
fact, we have learned the most important truth - that the beast
represents a kingdom, or system. Daniel 7:23 says,

'~.. The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom ... II

And, of course, we learned that when Rome fell there would arise in
the Western Roman Empire a little horn, another beast, another
kingdom. And it would fulfill all these identifying marks. It would
come up among the ten [kingdoms] in Western Europe, after the ten
that is, after the fall of the Roman Empire [Daniel 7:8]. It would

Page 4
The Mark of the Beast
" .

subdue three of the first horns, which are clearly placed in history.
One of the three that it would subdue, the Ostrogoths, would begin
the reign of this system, or this kingdom as the Bible calls it, in 538.
It would have a man at the head, it would be a diverse [different] type
of power "to speak great things," it would "make war on the saints,"
it would "think to change [God's] times and laws," and it would reign
and persecute for 1260 symbolic days [Revelation 13:5 and Daniel
7:25]. Remember, these were symbols. The beast was a symbol. The
horns were symbols, the wings were symbols, the heads were symbols,
and so were the days. They were symbols of years. And, of course,
this kingdom was to arise right there in Rome.

Now remember, by talking about these beasts, and by calling this

system a beast, we are not condemning everyone who was born into
that system or that is a part of that system because, remember, God
said that Nebuchadnezzar himself would be in the kingdom of God.
God makes it clear in His Word that Cyrus, according to Isaiah 44:28,
was His anointed, His shepherd, who would accomplish all His will.
And Cyrus was a man at the head of a beast system. There will be
many Greeks in the kingdom of God, many Romans in the kingdom.
Paul wrote a letter to the Romans. And among these horns we find
just about every nationality you'd like to find. The Spanish, the
French, the Germans, the English, the Portuguese; they are all there,
friends. And so by talking about a beast, by talking about a horn,
we're not condemning everybody who's in that system.

In fact, it's important that you realize that this system would change
God's law. And we know that the law it's talking about has to be the
Ten Commandment-law, because it cannot refer to the Mosaic law. It
was done away with when Jesus died on the cross. Remember
Colossians 2:14 and Ephesians 2:15. There was a law of ordinances
that was blotted out and abolished when Jesus died on the cross. That
was the Mosaic or ceremonial law. So the only law that this beast
could think to change would be the Ten Commandment-law. That's
the law that would never change. Jesus said, according to Matthew
5: 18, that not" one jot or one tittle" would in any wise pass from the
law. Psalm 111 says very clearly in verses 7 and 8, that that law stands
"fast for ever and ever." And the Bible says, concerning God's
covenant, in Psalm 89:34,

Page 5
The Mark of the Beast

''Mycovenant willI not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out
of my lips."

Of course, in the New Testament the Bible is clear that the Ten
Commandment-law remains as a rule of a holy life. James says in
James 2:11, 12,

''Forhe that sold, Do not commit adultery, sold also, Do not kill:
Now, If thou commit no adultery, yet If thou kill; thou art become
a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that
shall bejudged by the law of liberty. /I

He's referring to that Ten Commandment-law: "Thou shalt not kill.

Thou shalt not steal" [Exodus 20:13-15]. And in that same "passage
he says that if we break one, we're guilty of them all.

Now, let me say something at this point. You may say, "Well then, in
saying that, you're condemning everyone who lived during these 1260
years, because we happen to know that one of the laws that this beast
- power changed, or did away with, was the law that said, 'thou shalt
not make unto thee any graven image ...or bow thyself down to them"
[Exodus 20:4,5]. Remember that the "falling away" took place [2
Thessalonians 2:3]. Paul said that "the falling away" would begin
after his departing; you'll find that in Acts 20:29. You'll also find, in
2 Thessalonians 2:7, that the "mystery of iniquity" was already at
work, already beginning. 1 John 2:18 makes it clear that it took place,
just as Paul predicted. After Paul died the "falling away" came into
the church. 1 John 5:21 says,

"Little children, keep yourselves from idols. "

You see, friends, idolatry was coming into the church. There were
early ties. In fact, in Revelation 2:20, in the first letters to the
churches, Jesus Christ writes to the churches: "I've got something
against you, because you're allowing Jezebel to teach my servants to
eat things sacrificed to idols" [paraphrased]. You see, idolatry and
idolatrous worship was already coming into the Christian church,
even in the days of the Apostle John.

But now, notice very closely that though the law of Cod was to be
changed, there would still be salvation for people who, without

Page 6
The Mark of the Beast

.knowing it, ignorantly broke His commandment. Now, I want you to

understand this, because the James who said, "If you break one, you
are guilty of them all," is the same James who said in James 4:17,

'Therefore to him that Imoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to

him it is sin. "

Now, that's a very important text. Now look at John 9:41. It says,

"Jesussaid unto them, if ye were blind, ye should hane no sin: but

now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remalneth. II

Very interesting concept, isn't it? Jesus Himself says had they been
blind, then they would "have no sin"; but now that they see, thelrtsin
remaineth." Notice with me John 15:22. Again, the same thought,

"If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin:
but now they haoe no cloak for their sin. II

In the margin you will see that "cloak" is the same as excuse. Now
you see, friends, I preached this very message in Quebec, and I've
preached to largely Catholic audiences. And, of course, sometimes
I'm preaching about idolatry and how the church of the Middle Ages
changed God's laws, and in the catechism dropped that commandment
out of their teaching, and then brought idols into the church. As
Catholics, for hundreds of years, they have practiced bowing down to
statues, and doesn't God say, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any
graven images ...and bow thyself down to them?" [Exodus 20:4, 5,
paraphrased ].

And so, people have come to me and said.t'Ihen you're saying that
there's no hope for any of my relatives, or for any of my loved ones,
because they've all bowed to a statue sometime in their lives. You're
saying they're all going to hell. Is that what you're saying? You're
saying that they're all lost]"

Friends, listen to me closely. The law does not save us; Jesus saves
us. Ephesians 2:8, 9 says that,

'~.. by grace ye are saved through faith .••Not of works, lest any man
should boast."

Page 7
The Mark of the Beast

And remember the text from James 4:17,

"a.to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth It not, to him It is

sin."

And Jesus makes it very clear that there must be a knowledge of the
law in order for the law to condemn.

In fact, the story is told of a man who had a material store. His
grandfather had sold material, and his great-grandfather had sold
material, and there was one particular table, an heirloom, in his shop
that had belonged to his great-grandfather and had been there for
years. It was a prized treasure of that family, and it had been passed
down with that noble tradition of selling cloth in the particular town
in which they dwell And friends, one day a modem woman walked
into that store, and she ordered so many yards of material. Well, the
man was very happy to serve her, and he measured it out on that
heirloom table and sent her home. She got home, and she began to
make the drapes that she was planning on making, and she noticed
that she was short of material. She said, "Now, I know I didn't
measure wrong. He must have cheated me." Once again she began
measuring the cloth; and sure enough, the man had gypped her of
some material. It was short just a few inches, but short indeed. She
returned to the shop and she said, "Now listen, I didn't want any
leftover material. I bought exactly what I needed. I asked you for it,
and you measured it out on this table, and I took it home and
discovered that you cheated me," And he said, "What do you mean,
Ma'am?" She said "Well, this table is short; this yardstick on this table
is short, It's a lie. It's not telling the truth." And he said "Oh, ma'am,
it cannot be. This table has been in the family for years. This belonged
to my grandfather and my great-grandfather." But sure enough, she
took a yardstick and laid it against the yardstick on the table, and the
yardstick on the table was short just 1/4 inch. Of course, as you
measure out more and more material, that 1/4 inch added up, and
so she had been gypped. Now friends, here is the point that you need
to realize: back in the days of the great-grandfather, measurements
were not standardized as they are today. And this man was not aware
that the yardstick was short, Now, let's ask the question. Was the
man guilty? No one would consider that man a thief. No one would
consider him guilty. He was not aware that his yardstick was short,

Page 8
The Mark of the Beast

He thought his yardstick was intact. He thought it had all 36 inches

in it and he was being honest in following what he thought was right.
He wasn't aware of it. Now, no one would condemn that man. And
of course, the woman didn't condemn him either. Now, let's be
honest. If, after that woman leaves, he continues using that old
yardstick, what does he become? A thief. And so the answer is the
same in what I'm saying, friends. When we know God's law says,

'Thou shall not make unto thee any graoen image•••Thou shall not
bow down thyself to them, nor serve them ••.• [Exodus 20:4, 5]
II

When we know that and understand that, and we know what God has
asked, but we refuse to follow Jesus, we refuse to keep His
commandments, and we go on keeping our own traditions and the
traditions of our father so that we break God's law; then what have
we become? Guilty. We've become guilty. But people, out of
ignorance, thought they were keeping the Ten Commandments. I've
gone out to many dear Catholic people, (my mother and father are
still Catholics) and I've talked to them, and I've said, "People, do you
believe in the Ten Commandments?" and they say,"Yes." My mother
said, NOh,yes, I believe in the Ten Commandments, son," My whole
family believes in the Ten Commandments. Sure they do. And they
believe they keep them. It wasn't until I read to them, and showed
them with their own eyes [that they saw there was a problem]. And
I'll tell you what. Now my mother has a hard time bowing down to
those statues. She doesn't do it anymore. She has learned better.
But for years she thought she was keeping the Ten Commandments.
So you see, there are good Catholics, friends, who love Jesus and have
accepted Him as their personal Saviour and they are living up to all
the light they have. Do you understand what I'm saying? Oh yes,
they may have some blind spots, but it's not their fault. It's because
they were taught this way, they were trained this way; and for years
they were told not to read the Bible. In fact, years ago it was a mortal
sin to read the Bible, if you were a Catholic. And so how could they
know? They couldn't know. Jesus says in James 4:17,

'~•.to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is

sin.II

Page 9
The Mark of the Beast

John 9:41 says that if they were blind, they would not have sin, but
now that Jesus had come and spoken the truth, now their "sin
remaineth.·

Don't you see friends, that's why Peter says, in 2 Peter 2:21, that it
would be better for some,

not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after having

I~••

known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto

them."

Now, there are Christians allover the world who are still following
the changes that were made in God's law by the beast Am I saying
that they're all lost? I hope you understand, I'm not saying that I'm
not condemning people who do not know, and have not had a chance
to know, the truth about God's Word. But before Jesus comes, the
truth will be preached to every nation, kindred, tongue and people.
So you see, friends, it's not for me to judge. I'm not condemning
people. Many people are ignorant of the things you have heard. But
some people happened to know what I was going to say even before
these meetings started. They figured it out They said, ·We know
who invited that fellow into town, and we know sooner or later he's
going to bring up that subject, and we don't want to hear about that
subject We want to stay ignorant of that subject" And so they stick
their heads in the sand like the ostrich. But friends, will that deliver
them? No. You see, if we are, as 2 Peter 3:5 says, "willingly ignorant,"
then friend, we become guilty. But if we know the truth, then it is
obvious that if we love Jesus and the truth, we'll want to follow and
obey Him.

We're going to add another clue to these identifying lists of things.

You see, there's another clue that once again will confirm that we are
on the right track in identifying the beast of Revelation 13 as who we
have said it is, and as who we know it is from these meetings. There
is only one system, there is only one kingdom, that fits all of these
identifying marks; but there is one more identifying clue that the Bible
gives us. It's right here in Revelation 13. Notice what it says in
Revelation 13:17,

"that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the
name of the beast, or the number of his name. "

Page 10
The Mark of the Beast

.The first thing I want you to notice is that when we talk about the
mark of the beast, and we talk about the number of the beast, we're
talking about two different things. It says "save he that had the mark,
or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." So there's the
mark of the beast, or the number of the beast. The "mark of the beast"
is one thing, the "number of the beast" is something else.

Now, it says in verse 18,

"Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the

number .•."

Notice, this is "the number of the beast;" and then it says,

'~.. for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred
three score and six. "

"His number is Six hundred three score and six." So, as we talk about
the number of the beast, it is "the number of a man •

Notice, there is a man at the head of the beast system. Daniel said
the horn had eyes like the "eyes of a man and a mouth speaking great
things" [Daniel 7:8]. We've already discovered that there's only one
power that arose in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire among
the ten original barbarian tribes; it subdued the Heruli, the Vandals
and the Ostrogoths; it had a man at its head; it was a different type
of system, because it was religious as well as political. It spoke "great
things against the Most High" [Daniel 7:25]; it made war on the saints
during the period of the Inquisition and the persecutions; indeed, it
changed God's Ten Commandment-law, by doing away with the law
against idolatry, among other things, as we'll see; and of course it
reigned from 538 A.D. to 1798 when Napoleon's General Berthier
took the pope captive, and gave to the system of the Papacy "a deadly
wound" [Revelation 13:3]. It was the only system that arose at Rome
and to this day reigns from there, which is indeed the city of the
dragon. Remember, according to Revelation 13:2, the dragon was to
give his "seat" to the beast. And we know that the Papal Kingdom,
the Papal system, arose there in Rome.

Page 11
The Mark of the Beast

And we can add one more clue - and that is that the number of the
man at the head of this system, the number of his name, is 666. Now,
notice there is a key here. It says in Revelation 13:18,

"Here is wisdom, Let him that hath understanding count"

(calculate, as some versions say) "the number of the beast•••n

This is something you have to calculate. This is something you've got

to count up to arrive at Now, what is he talking about? Why does
it say, "...count the number of the beast for it is the number of a
man ...·? Well, here's the answer, friends. And I'm quoting from
Matthew Henley's Commentary, volume 3, page 1065. "It was a
method practiced by the ancients, to denote names by numbers." And
again from Adam Clarke's Commentary. volume 3, page 1025,
"Numbers, or the ancient practice of representing numbers by letters
of the alphabet, gave rise to a practice among the ancients of
representing names by numbers." Now, let me explain that, and you'll
understand what these two commentaries are saying.

You see, the ancients used letters for numbers. Remember the Roman
numerals? V is 5; L is 50; C is 100; I is 1; D is 500; etc. You're familiar
with the Roman numerals. You see, they used letters as numbers,
and this practice of using letters as numbers gave rise to a practice
of calculating one's name. In fact, tonight you could count up your
name and find out what the number of your name is. My name is Dis,
D·I-S. D is 500, I is 1, S is nothing. So as I calculate my name, it
equals 501. The name of Dis equals 501. Now the Bible says,

'~..Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast:
for It Is the number of a man•••"

It is "the number of the beast" yes, but it is also "the number of a

man." So, it must be the number of the man at the head of that system.
Now, are we talking about a particular man? No, not necessarily,
because, remember the beast is a kingdom, it's a system [a mingling
of church and state], and it has had many men at its head. But all of
the men who have been at the head of this system have shared one
official name or title, and that official name or title is Vicarivs Filii
Dei.

Page 12
The Mark of the Beast

Now, I'm going to quote to you from a Catholic newspaper entitled

Our Sunday Visitor. dated April, 1915: "The letters inscribed in the
pope's miter are these: Vicarios Filii Dei." Now, today those letters
are no longer in the miter but they are still the pope's official name
or title. And every pontiff, every Roman Catholic pope, from the day
of Peter, (as they claim.) down to our day, according to their own
teaching, has had that official name or title: Vicarius Filii Dei. It
means "Vicar of the Son of God." That is his official name or title. In
fact, a friend of ours was in Washington and went to the Archbishop
of Washington, D.C., and asked him, "What is the official name or title
of the pontiff?" I have a xeroxed copy of this paper on official Roman
Catholic stationery, signed by the Archbishop and notarized, saying
and agreeing that the "official name of the Papacy, of the pope, is
Yicarios Filii Dei," If you look it up in the Catholic Encyclopedia
under "pontiff" you'll find that his official name or title is Vicarivs
Filii Dei. Now friends, the Bible says to count that name. It is the
number of a man, a number of the beast, "and his number is six
hundred, three score and six," or 666 [Revelation 13:18].

Now, someone might say, "Well, that is circumstance. Or that is a

chance. That's just luck or something." Well, friends, when you add
that little bit of circumstantial evidence to all that has gone before,
again we answer, there is only one system in the world that fits all of
the identifying marks.

Now, I want you to notice that it doesn't take a great scholar to be

able to discover the fact that as you count the number of the beast,
the number of the man at the head of this system, it will indeed add
up to six hundred, three score and six. Notice the Vicarioos - V is 5;
I is 1; C is 100; A is nothing; R is nothing; I is 1; V is 5; and S is
nothing. So as you count Vicariovs, you find 112.

Now someone may ask, "Why, in Vlcariovs, is the U spelled as a V?"

Well, because in the Roman numerals and in the Roman alphabet, the
V and the U are the same letters. In fact, it doesn't take much to
convince yourself of that Just go to any old courthouse and you'll
see that the old courthouses all over North America are spelled
Courthouse. The V and the U were spelled exactly the same, and so
VICARIOVS in the Roman numerals equals 112. FILII-F is nothing;
I is 1; L is 50; and two more I's make 53. DEI-D is 500; E is nothing;

Page 13
The Mark of the Beast
" .

but I is 1. So we have 112; 53; and 501. As you calculate the number
of his official name and title, it is indeed, six hundred three score and
six!

But remember, this is not the "mark of the beast- This is the "number
of his name"; and the Bible says no one could buy or sell unless he
.had the mark or the name or the number of his name [Revelation
13:17]. And so the question remains, what is the mark of the beast?
Now that's why you came tonight. But before we understand what
the mark of the beast is, we must understand what the seal of God is.
Because where does the mark of the beast go? Does anyone
remember? In the right hand or in the forehead [Revelation 13: 16J.

You'll see that the Bible very clearly here tells us that something is
in competition here. You see, we've got two things: the seal of God
and the mark of the beast And these two things are in competition
for our forehead. These two things are obviously trying to get our
attention. In the same place where the beast places his mark in the
forehead, God desires to place His seal. Notice what it says in
Revelation 7:2 and 3,

'1 saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of
the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels,
to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, hurt
not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the
servants of our God in their foreheads. /I

Notice that before tribulation can even begin to touch this earth, God
will seal His disciples [servants] in their foreheads. And it says here
to "...hurt not the earth ...till we have sealed the servants of our God
in their foreheads." And it's very clear that this seal goes in the
forehead.

Now, notice something interesting here. In Revelation 7, obviously

at the end of time, John sees an angel ascending with the seal of God
that says, "Hurt not the earth until we have sealed the servants of our
God." So it's obvious that until this time comes, the servants of God
are not sealed. I want you to follow me now, because it obviously
implies that they were not sealed until the angel came to seal them,
doesn't it? He says,

Page 14
The Mark of the Beast

'~..Hurt not the earth... till we have sealed the servants of our God
in their foreheads. /I

So they were not sealed before this. It's obvious that in the days of
the apostles, the disciples were being sealed. In the days of the
apostles, the early Christians were receiving the seal of God. Now,
this is very important to notice. It says in Ephesians 4:30,

'~nd grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto
the day of redemption. II

So I want you to notice that in the days of the apostles, in the apostolic
times, the disciples, the Christians, were being sealed by the Holy
Spirit But during the Dark Ages, during the Middle Ages, something
must have taken place. Something must have taken place that
affected this seal of God, because it isn't until you get to Revelation
7, that the angel says, "...hurt not the earth, neither the trees ...till we
have sealed the servants of our God..." [Revelation 7:3]. So, what was
being done in the first century when Paul says to "grieve not the Holy
Spiril..whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption ...• is to
happen once again at the end, before Jesus returns. It's obvious that
this is something that was happening in apostolic times; but during
that time of darkness, during that time when the beast reigned, this
truth of the seal of God would somehow be covered up, or
side-stepped, or side-tracked. Remember, we learned in Acts 3: 19 to
21 that at the end of time there is going to be a "restitution of all
things" spoken of by the prophets. Remember, it's at the end of time,
according to Isaiah 58: 12, that they shall restore the old waste places,
repair the breach, and build the old foundations; so before Jesus
comes once again the seal of God is being placed among His servants.
Ephesians 4:30 says,

"Andgrieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed..• 1/

It's very important that you understand this. The Holy Spirit is the
One who seals us. Now, there has been much confusion in the minds
of many Christians. In fact I, myself, was in the same confusion,
because I used to think that the Holy Spirit was the seal. But if you
notice carefully, Ephesian's 4:30 says to grieve not the Holy Spirit
whereby ye are sealed.

Page 15
The Mark of the Beast

There is a slight nuance there that you must follow. And I think this
illustration will clarify it for you. How many of you are familiar with
a seal? You know if you go to the notary public, or go into the church
office sometime, you see a seal. Some of those [seals are formed in]
black machines with a handle on them. Others have little aluminum
seals, or metal ones, and what they do is put a paper in [the machine]
and then they squeeze and pull down the handle. Now, what do you
call that "gizmo"? A seal. In fact, if you go to the notary public and
you can't find it, they say, "I've misplaced my seal." They call it a seal.
Now, when you put the paper in the machine and press down, what
is left on the paper? A seal. It's called the seal, as well. You see, now
your paper has been sealed and there is a seal afflxed to it, Notice
that we have a tendency to call both the instrument that makes the
seal and the seal itself by the same name. We call it the seal, .and yet
understand that one is the sealer. The other is the seal itself. Now,
the Holy Spirit is the one who seals us, (Grieve not the Holy Spirit
whereby ye are sealed) but the question is: what is the seal itself?

Now we can get a few clues - first of all, from the very wording of
Revelation because, notice, the seal of God goes in the forehead. The
mark of the beast goes in the right hand or in the forehead. Obviously
these two things, as I've said before, are counterfeits of each other.
The mark is obviously a counterfeit of the seal. Now, the question is
this: does the Bible anywhere else talk about something going in the
forehead? If it does, it will give us a good clue as to what this seal
has to do with; because Revelation is a book that takes things from
every other book in the Bible. Let's go to Deuteronomy 6, verse 6,
and let's see if there was anything that God clearly said was to be
written in our forehead? The Bible says to seal My disciples [Isaiah
8: 16] at the end of time; God says to seal the servants of our God, "in
their foreheads" [Revelation 7:3]. Now, what in the Bible was said to
go in the forehead? I'm going to read a number of texts; one will
clarify this and "tie it down and nail the coffin shut," But I just want
to show you all the texts, so that you'll see that, again, this is the Word
of God. Deuteronomy 6:6 says,

"And these words, which I command thee this day... /I

Page 16
The Mark of the Beast
" .

Now, if you want to know what the words were that were commanded
that day, all you have to do is read the conte xt, Chapter 5, is giving
the Ten Commandments. Deuteronomy 5:7 and 8 says,

'Thou shalt have none other gods before me. Thou shalt not make
unto thee any graven image... "

So you have the Ten Commandments in Deuteronomy 5: 1 through

21. It says in chapter 6, verses 6 to 8,

"Andthese words, which I command thee this day, shalt be in thine

heart: Thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, shalt
talk of them when thou slttest in thine house, when thou ioalkest
by the way, when thou ltest down, when thou risest up. And thou
shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be as
frontlets between thy eyes. "

Remember that word 'sign," and you need to get a dictionary and
look up the word "frontlets.' The word "frontlets" there is the old
English word for forehead. That's why all of the new versions like
the NIV read, "bind them on your foreheads.· And it says here that
"thou shalt bind them." These commandments that God gave them,
"the words that I command thee," He says, "thou shalt bind them for
a sign upon thine hand and they shall be as frontlets between thine
eyes." And as the new versions read, "upon thy forehead." And so,
God said that His law is going to be a sign upon our foreheads.

Now turn with me to Deuteronomy 11:18.

"Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in

your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they
may be as frontlets between your eyes. "

And again, the New International Version says, "may be upon your
forehead." So God says that His laws, His words, His commandments
will be a sign upon our hand, and upon our forehead.

Now, do you know what the Jews did? They took that literally.
Obviously God was not speaking literally. He says "in your heart"
and "in your soul." And you couldn't any more write in your heart
and in your soul than He meant for you to write them on your

Page 17
The Mark of the Beast

forehead. But the Jews took it literally. They took the

commandments, wrote them on little pieces of paper, put them in little
leather boxes, and then with little leather straps they tied them around
their foreheads and around their arms, They were called phylacteries
and the Jews went around wearing these. And this was a sign, you
see. They said, "Look, we've got God's laws as a sign upon our hands
and upon our foreheads."

But friends, what did God really mean by that? Why, He simply meant
that God's law was to be carried out in our actions and they were to
be written in our minds. That's what He meant Turn with me now
to Deuteronomy 10:15 [note: see Hebrews 10:15, cassette refers to
Deuteronomy 10:15 in error.] and notice again how the Holy Ghost
comes into this. That's the difference between the old covenant and
the new covenant In the new covenant we've got the Holy Spirit
Remember, in the old covenant God wrote His law in stone, and told
them to write the law upon their hands and on their foreheads. But
in the New Testament, what does God say? Remember He's talking
here about the new covenant in Hebrews 10:15 and 16,

"Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness .•. /I

Now, let me ask you a question: why do you get a document sealed?
To prove it true; to make it legal. But indeed, it is to have a witness,
isn't it? The whole point of having something sealed is to have it
witnessed by someone in authority. You go to the notary public so
that he can be a witness. And he doesn't just seal it; he signs it He
is a witness. He is the sealer of the document He is the one who
makes it valid and accountable, even before law, because he becomes
a witness to the fact that you signed it, that it was official. Now it
says here in Hebrews 10:15 and 16,

"Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he
had sold before, This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, salth the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts,
and in their minds willI write them;"

If we ask anyone to point to their mind. This [the forehead] is the

mind. When we go looking for the mind we go here. God says I'm
going to write My laws in their hearts and in their minds. When Isay
my mind what am I pointing to? My forehead. The forehead is the

Page 18
The Mark of the Beast
" .

, sign or symbol of the mind. And so when God said in the Old
Testament that His laws are to be in the hand or in the forehead; He
was clearly telling them that this law needed to be put into action,
and it needed to be in their minds. Now, what's interesting is that in
the Old Testament the sign of God's law could be either in the hand
or in the forehead; in the New Testament the seal of God only goes
in the forehead. Nowhere in the New Testament or in the book of
Revelation do you ever read about the seal going in the right hand.
Now, the mark of the beast goes in the right hand or the forehead.
And in the Old Testament the law could go in the right hand or in the
forehead. But in the New Testament the seal only goes in the
forehead.

Now, I want you to know what this means. Because just as God did
not expect the Jews to literally write His law on their hands or in their
foreheads, so in the book of Revelation, obviously God is not talking
about some literal tatoo in the forehead. When He talks about the
seal of God going in the forehead He's not talking about some literal
tatoo. He doesn't expect us to walk around with something on our
heads. In fact in Ephesians 4:30 He says,

"And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed.•• 1/

So, there were Christians in the New Testament church who were
sealed in their foreheads. They were sealed with the seal of God. Do
you think they went about with some kind of tatoo on their foreheads?
Of course not, But they were sealed. Now, why did the law in the
Old Testament go in the hand or in the forehead? Simply this: you
see, in the Old Testament God apparently was interested in outward
obedience. And as long as they obeyed, even if it was just on the
outside, they were not subject to the death penalty. They could not
be killed by Jewish law for having broken the law in their hearts or
in their minds. They had to do it on the outside. And so, under the
old covenant, many people had God's law written not in their minds,
but just in their hands. Outwardly they went along with this. But
Jesus, when He came, took the law and said it's not enough to have
it in your hands. You've got to have it in your heart and in your mind.
You know where He did that? In the Sermon on the Mount, He said
in Matthew 5:21, 27 and 28,

Page 19
The Mark of the Beast

''Yehave heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not
kill; and whosoever shall kill shaH be in danger of the judgment:
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not
commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on
a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her
already in his heart. "

And so Jesus, talking about the law, said that now it must be in your
heart and in your mind. And this was, indeed, the new covenant Paul
says the new covenant is when the Holy Ghost is a witness, it's when
the Holy Ghost is our notary public and He seals the law, not on the
outside, not just in the hand, so that we'll obey it from the outside,
but He will write it in our hearts and in our minds [inward obedience].

Now, turn with me to Isaiah 8 and this will "clinch it" Remember
Paul, in 2 Corinthians 3:3 says,

'~..ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ•••written

not with ink, but with the Spirit of the Uving God; not in tables of
stone, but in the fleshy tables of the heart. II

So the Holy Ghost does seal something among the disciples, doesn't
He? God's Holy Spirit does write something in our foreheads. What
does He write in our foreheads? His law. And this time He doesn't
write it in tables of stone. That was the old covenant The new
covenant is the law written by the Holy Ghost in our hearts and in
our minds. And if you study the very verses that refer to it in the New
Testament, you'll see that to be the case. Hebrews 8:8 through 10;
Hebrews 10:15 and 16; and 2 Corinthians 3:3 all make it clear that in
the new covenant the Holy Ghost writes His law in our hearts and in
our minds. Does the seal have anything to do with the law? Well,
we've already seen that In the New Testament, the seal goes in the
forehead. But in the Old Testament the only thing that went in the
forehead was God's law. So, if it were just on that basis, we could
already assume that the seal had something to do with the law. You
see, God doesn't leave us to assume. God doesn't want us to guess.
He makes it clear in His Word. Isaiah 8:14 says,

Page 20
The Mark of the Beast

"And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and

for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for
a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. /I

Now, please tell me: who is this referring to? Jesus Christ. In fact, if
you were to look into the New Testament, you would find that these
verses were the very ones that the New Testament applied to Jesus
Christ. In Matthew 21:42 and 43 you'll find that Jesus is the Rock
which is a "stone of stumbling" to both the houses of Israel. Isaiah
[8:14] here is referring to Jesus who is a sanctuary. Remember Jesus
said in John 2:19,

1~•• Destroy this temple, and In three days I will raise It up. "

His body is the temple of God and so He shall be a sanctuary. That

was Jesus. He shall be a "stone of stumbling and a rock of offence"
to both the houses of Israel. That was Jesus. Now go to Isaiah 8:18,

"Behold,I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for
signs and for wonders In Israel from the LORD of hosts, which
dwelleth in mount Zion. /I

Now friends, that verse is quoted in Hebrews 2:13 as referring to Jesus

Christ. In fact, it puts these words in the very mouth of our Lord and
Saviour, Jesus Christ. As you look at this chapter, there's no denying
that it's talking about the New Testament. Jesus became a "rock of
offence and a stone of stumbling" when He was crucified. Paul said,
"We preach Christ crucified, an offence to the Greeks and a
stumblingblock to the Jews" [1 Corinthians 1:23, paraphrased].

The Bible is clear that it is talking about the new covenant in Isaiah
8:14. It is then, in the new covenant, that Jesus became exactly as
Isaiah says in verse 14. And in verse 18 this is quoted as referring to
Jesus in the New Testament speaking to His disciples, the church,
according to Hebrews 2:13. So there is no arguing. The context says
it's talking about Jesus and the New Testament. Now, let's read Isaiah
8: 16. It says,

"Bind up the testimony, seal: ••"

Page 21
The Mark of the Beast

There's that word again. That's what we want to know. We want to

know about the seal of God. And by the way, this word "seal" is the
same word used in the book of Revelation [Revelation 7:3], used in
the book of Ephesians [Ephesians 4:30]. In fact, in the Greek version
of Isaiah, the Septuagint version of Isaiah, the word" seal" is the same
word used in Revelation 7. Now notice what is to be sealed. It says,

'Blnd up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. "

Somebody says, "Oh, boy, he's going back to that old law." Well,
friends, obviously the law has to do with the seal. You can't deny it,
It says it right there. It says to bind up the testimony and seal the
law among My disciples. It's the law that was to be sealed among the
of
disciples; and remember, friends, the early Christians kept all God's
commandments. It's obvious that the New Testament church kept
all of God's commandments. James 2:10 says that if you break one,
you're "guilty of all." He wouldn't be saying that if the New Testament
disciples had gotten rid of one or two of them. Obviously, they kept
them all. They knew that Jesus said that not one jot or one tittle shall
pass from those laws [Matthew 5:18]. And so the New Testament
church kept God's commandments. And you see, friends, that's why
Paul could say in Ephesians 4:30,

"Grlevenot the Holy Spirit whereby ye are sealed... "

Those early Christians had all Ten Commandments being written in

their hearts and in their minds by the Holy Ghost, But notice how
all this comes together again. God says, in Isaiah 8:16,

'~..seal the law among my disciples"

Among the new Christians, the New Testament Christians, the law
was being sealed. But then came a falling away. And a "man of
lawlessness" set himself up in the church and the temple of God. And
what happened? He changed times and laws. Now, in changing the
times and laws, could he have tampered with the seal? Think about
it, It says to, "seal the law among my disciples." So the law is what
has to be sealed among the disciples. Now, you go to a notary public
and start playing with his seal. Cut a little part of it out, Cut two
parts of it out, And then ask him to make your paper official and
valid. Can it be sealed? No. You see, any tampering with the seal

Page 22
The Mark of the Beast

.renders it useless. And God says, in Acts 3:21, that before Jesus comes
at the end of time, there'll be "a restitution of all things." God will,
once again, restore to His people the truth. He will restore to them
His law. What does it say in Revelation 7:3?

'~..Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have
sealed..•/I

In the end of time God will once again seal the law among His disciples.

Now, you ladies who do some canning, you want to be sure that when
you cook those tomatoes and put them in ajar, the jar is sealed. Isn't
that right? If it's not sealed, it's going to spoil; so you want to be sure
it's sealed. And if there is a breach, or a break, in any part of that
seal, can it be sealed? No. You've got to cover every point. No
wonder James says that if you break one, you're guilty of them all.

Now, let's go a little further in talking about the seal. You see, a seal
is something that was very familiar in Old Testament times. In fact,
we're still familiar with a seal today. A seal is what makes a law valid.
In fact, to this day many governments still operate with a seal. In the
Old Testament you can read about Jezebel [1 Kings 21]. She was the
wife of Ahab [the king]. Ahab wanted Naboth's vineyard. And so
what did Jezebel do? She made a law and had Naboth killed, and they
stole his vineyard. But in order to make that law, she had to seal it
with the king's seal. Remember when Daniel was put into the den of
lions? The law had been sealed by the seal of the Medo-Persians,
Even though the king wanted to change his mind and spare Daniel,
he could not spare Daniel because he had sealed the law with the seal
of the Medes and Persians (Daniel 6:17].

You see friends, a seal is what makes a law valid. Now, all men have
laws, and all laws, in order for them to be [considered] official by a
government, must be sealed with the government seals. In fact, to
this day the United States has a seal. And that seal, you see, has three
things just as seals have always had. You can go back to the Old
Testament and the seals had the same thing they have today. They
have (1) the name of the lawgiver; (2) the territory of the lawgiver
and (3) the office of the lawgiver. Always those three things: the
name of the lawgiver, the office of the lawgiver, and the territory over
which he rules. Those three things are always found in a seal. Now

Page 23
The Mark of the Beast

take, for instance, the seal of the United States. The seal of the United
States always affixes to it the name of the president in office. It has
the office of this man, which is, of course, president and then it has
the territory over which he rules - the United States of America. And
no matter what the government, if it has a seal, it will have these
things - the name of the lawgiver in office, his official title, and then,
of course, the territory over which he rules or reigns. This is what a
seal involves.

Now friends, if human laws have seals, what about God's law? Do
you think that God would give a law, and then not affix to it His seal
or the reason why it should be obeyed, His authority? Why, of course
He wouldn't. Now, let's turn to the book of Exodus, chapter 20, where
we find the law, because we've already learned that the seal has
something to do with the law. And where in the Ten Commandments
do we find a law that has those three things? What is it in the Ten
Commandments that gives authority to those commandments? God
says don't kill, don't steal, don't lie, don't commit adultery. Honor
your mother and father; and somebody says, "Why? Why should I do
that?" Friends, there's only one answer that comes back: "I'm the
Creator." That's the reasoning behind why we should obey. That's
what makes the law valid. That is, indeed, His office. He is the
Creator. Now is there one of the Ten Commandments that includes
all three of these things - the name of the lawgiver, the office of the
lawgiver, and the territory over which he rules? Yes, there is one.
It's found in the fourth commandment. In Exodus 20:8 and 11 it says,

"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. For in six days the
LORD ••• /1

and there you have His name, Yahweh. Do you realize, that this name
is the name Jesus? Jesus in Hebrew is pronounced Jehoshua [Yeshua].
And we still sing "Hallelujah, Hallelujah." "Yah," That means His
name. And there is Yahweh, or Yeshua, or the Ruach, or Spirit of
Yah. Yah is the one name that is found in each title of the Godhead,
whether it's Yahweh the Father, or the Holy Spirit, the Ruach ofYah.
Yah is the one name that is found in all three.

And so He says in Exodus 20:11,

Page 24
The Mark of the Beast

'~.. in six days the LORD" (Yahweh) "made heaven and earth, the
sea, and all that in them is...II

Now notice, in this commandment we have the three things in a seal.

We have His name, the LORD. And we have "the LORD made," or
Maker. The word "made" there is the Hebrew root for Creator. That's
His office. He is the LORD, He is the Maker, or Creator. And what's
His territory? The "heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is"
We know that the seal had to do with the law. He says, "seal the law
among my disciples." We know that the Devil was going to change
times and laws, and so what commandment would he change, except
the one that had to do with the seal of God? And we learned that he
changed the idol commandment, because he changed times and laws.
Yes, he did indeed do away with the commandment about idols, and
that's why idolatry came into the church. But remember, he also
changed times in that law. And the only commandment that had to
do with time was, of course, the commandment that said, "Remember
the Sabbath day to keep it holy." [See lecture number 8].

We discovered that according to the Bible, the Sabbath, the true

Sabbath, is the seventh day of the week. But today, the entire
Christian world is keeping Sunday, or the first day of the week, as the
day of rest and worship. Now, where did this change come about?
Well, Daniel tells us in Daniel 7:25 that the beast would "think to
change times and laws." From the Catholic Encyclopedia, volume 4,
page 153, I read, "The Catholic church, after changing the day of rest
from the Sabbath, or the seventh day of the week, to the first, made
the third commandment refer to Sunday as the day to be kept holy
as the Lord's day."

Then from The Convert's Catechism of Catholic Doctrine: Question:

"Which is the Sabbath day? Answer: Saturday is the Sabbath day.
Question: Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday? Answer:
We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic church
in the Council of Laodicea changed the day from Saturday to Sunday. "

You see, friends, it's clear that Daniel was right The beast thought
to "change times and laws" [Daniel 7:25]. But why change the
Sabbath, friends? Because the Sabbath is the only commandment
that contains the seal of God and that calls us to remember the fact
that He is Creator.

Page 25
The Mark of the Beast
., .

Now it's obvious that the Sabbath, in Genesis 2:2 and 3, existed before
Moses was ever born. It was in paradise that,

/I ••• God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it •.• back there in
/I

Eden.

So it has nothing to do with the ceremonial law of Moses. It was

something that God gave to man; not just to the Jews but to all
mankind, Adam and Eve included, way back then. And of course, we
read in Isaiah 66:22 and 23 that in the new heaven and new earth
all flesh shall come and worship before God on the Sabbath.

Furthermore, Jesus said that in 70 AD. and in the end of the world,
when this gospel would be preached in all the world, that His disciples
were to pray that their flight be "not in winter, neither on the Sabbath
day" [Matthew 24:20]. And Paul in the clear statement of Hebrews
4:4, 9 and 10 says,

'~..And God did rest the seventh day from all his works ..•There
remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. /I

The King James margin and all the new versions read,

'There remained therefore a keeping of a sabbath to the people of

God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from
his own works, as God did from his. [ed. note, see misc. info. page
/I

55].

So obviously the seventh day, which is part of those Ten

Commandments, was believed, kept, and honored by the early church.
They kept all of God's commandments. Not just eight, not just nine
but all ten. They were receiving the seal of God.

But we know that during the Dark Ages, the beast thought to "change
times and laws," and that before Jesus comes again, God will once
more seal the law among His disciples [Isaiah 8:16; Revelation 7:3].
In order to seal that law He must make it complete. James says that
if we break one we are guilty of them all. When Jesus comes, His
people will not be in darkness. Zechariah says there will be light in
the "evening time- [Zechariah 14:7]. Those who meet Jesus when He
comes will be like Him and will keep the day He kept Now, today

Page 26
The Mark or the Beast

there are many in ignorance who do not understand, and if they have
not had the chance to know, and if they have not yet understood the
importance of the commandments of God and all of these things, then
God will "wink" at their ignorance, as He says, until He brings them
to the light [Acts 17:30]. But it is clear that once the light shines on
our pathway, then we must walk in the path of obedience. We can't
do anything else. In fact, we want to. Turn with me to Exodus 31: 13.

We've already seen that the Bible says to "seal the law among my
disciples," and we've seen that the only commandment that contains
the name of the Lawgiver, the office of the Lawgiver and the territory
of the Lawgiver, the three components of the seal, is the fourth
commandment

Notice what we read here in Exodus 31- and by the way, we need to
ask a question: how many Jews do we have in the audience tonight?
How many Israelites do we have tonight? I am going to raise my hand.
Let me tell you why, and I'll give you a little Bible study.

In Romans 2:28 and 29 we see,

"HeIs not a Jew which Is one outwardly; ...But he is a Jew, which

is one inwardly; whose circumcision •.•ts not in the letter, but in
the spirit ••." [paraphrased]

And so Paul said that a true Jew is one who is a Jew on the inside.
Paul speaks about the rule of the "new creature" in Galatians 6:15
and 16. If we are new creations, peace upon the "Israel of God.·
Peace upon all those who walk according to this rule and upon the
Israel of God.

Paul, writing to the Galatians, calls them the •Israel of Cod." In fact,
in Galatians 3:29 it says,

"And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed..• /I

You see, according to the Bible, he is not a Jew "which is one

outwardly," but he is a Jew "which is one inwardly. "

Now, you will find this throughout the Bible; in fact, in Romans 11:17
you will find the prophecy of the olive tree. Israel is the olive tree.

Page 27
The Mark of the Beast

'.
Hosea 14: 5 and 6 calls Israel "an olive tree." And Israel, there the
olive tree,' is spoken of by Paul in Romans 11:17. He says that the
natural branches were broken off, and we, who are Gentiles, are wild
olive branches who were grafted into the olive tree.

So, we were adopted into the royal family of God, and that's why,
though you are Gentiles according to the flesh, you are children of
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; and if you are children of Jacob, then you
have become the "Israel of God."

That's why, today, it's no longer according to race but according to

grace. But, it's important that you understand that in the New
Testament, the church is called Israel. Galatians 6:16 proves it;
Romans 2:27 and 28 proves it; Romans 11:17 proves it. And I could
go on and on and give you many more statements where the Bible
says that we are the Israel of God. In fact, in Revelation 2:9 Jesus
talks about those who "say they-are Jews and are not."

So, of those who are literal Jews but had rejected Him, Christ said,
they "say they are Jews, but are not." We who have accepted Christ
become the children of Israel by faith. We have the God of Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob as our fathers. Now, you have got to keep this in
mind as you read this next text. Notice what it says in Exodus 31:13
and 16,

"Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my

sabbaths ye shall keep: for It Is a sign between me and you
throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the
LORD that doth sanctify you. Wherefore the children of Israel
shall 'keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their
generations, for a perpetual covenant. "

Do you know what the word "perpetual" means? [It means) never
ending, etemal- a perpetual covenant. Verse 17 says,

"It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever••."

Now, how do I know that this "for ever" means without end? In Isaiah
66:23, it says that in the new heaven and in the new earth,

Page 28
The Mark of the Beast

.from one sabbath to another, shall all nesh come and worship
I~ •

before me, saith the LORD. II

The Sabbath is a sign between God and the children of Israel forever.

Now, are we the Israel of God? Somebody's going to say, "I'm not a
Jew, I'm not Israel." Go ahead and say that if you want, but if you
are not Israel, if you are not a Jew, you are not going through those
gates in the New Jerusalem. I can prove it, because the New Jerusalem
has only twelve gates. You can read it in Revelation 21: 12. The New
Jerusalem has only twelve gates and at each of those gates is one of
the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.

How are we going to go into the New Jerusalem? It has twelve gates.
There's only one way in, and that's through the gates. In fact, listen
to this in Revelation 21: 12,

'~nd had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the
gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the
names of the tuielue tribes of the children of Israeli"

We have to enter in through the gates into the city. Are you planning
on going into the city, the New Jerusalem? I plan on being in that
city. All the saints will be in that city, according to the Word of God.
How are we going to get into that city? It's going to be through one
of those gates. Above each one of the gates is one of the names of
the twelve tribes of Israel. And there is also one of the names of the
twelve apostles [in the foundations. Revelation 21:14 ed.].

Now understand, I'm not talking literal Israel. I'm talking spiritual
Israel. And we will see, as we continue our study, and as we talk about
the 144,000, how Cod explains this in His Word. But it is clear that
if we are Christians, we are part of the Israel of Cod. In Exodus 31: 16
and 17 Cod says that the Sabbath "is a sign between me and the
children of Israel for ever." And Isaiah 66:22 and 23 say that "for
ever" is "in the new heaven and in the new earth." Jesus said, "not
one jot or one tittle shall in any wise pass from the law" [Matthew
5:18]. Revelation 22:14 says,

Page 29
The Mark of the Beast
.
"

"Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they mag have
a right to the tree of life, and may enter In through the gates Into
the city.
II

And the Sabbath, friends, is one of those commandments.

Now, let's go on because we've read that the Sabbath is a sign. Notice,
Ezekiel 20: 12,

''Moreoveralso I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me

and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify
them."

Does God still sanctify people today? Yes. And He says that the
Sabbath is a sign that He is the God that sanctifies. Friends, the same
God who set apart the seventh day promises to set aside His people.
And the Sabbath is a sign of that sanctification. Ezekiel 20:20 says,

"And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me

and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God."

So God says it is a sign between Me and Mypeople. Are we the people

of God? Yes. And He says it is a sign between Me and My people for
ever [Exodus 31:16, 17, paraphrased]. Now turn to Romans 4:11 and
you'll see how all this comes together. The Bible says,

'~..seal the law among my disciples." [Isaiah 8:16]

We can't ignore that text, It says the law is what is sealed among the
disciples; and that's why the Devil sought to change God's times and
laws, because in tampering with the law of God he was tampering with
the seal. And the one law, you see, that brings out the fact that God
is the Creator, that His name is Yahweh, Yah, or Yeshua, Jesus, and
that He is "the Lord of heaven, earth, the sea and all that is therein,
M

is the Sabbath commandment, And that was the one that involved
time that was changed. Friends, the Bible says before Jesus comes
all truth will be restored and He'll seal His law among His disciples.
Now, notice Romans 4:11,

"And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the

righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised.... "

Page 30
The Mark of the Beast

Now, I want you to notice that this is talking about circumcision,

something that, in the New Testament, is clearly done away with.
Today, we don't have to be circumcised. Paul says in 1 Corinthians
7:19,

"Circumcision is nothing, uncircumcision is nothing, but the

keeping of the commandments of God. n

This is what counts. Powerful statement. Circumcision here was a

sign; but notice what the sign was. It was a seal. According to the
Bible definition, a sign is a seal. And the Bible says the Sabbath is a
sign. He said to write My laws in your forehead as a sign. But the
Sabbath was the one law that was specifically called a sign. And Paul
says in Romans 4:11, that that sign was a seal [· ...the sign of
circumcision, a seal ...•]. Friends, when people keep the seventh-day
Sabbath, they prove to the world and to all heaven that they are not
following the beast but are people who believe in Jesus Christ and
keep the Sabbath. It's obvious they're not Jews outwardly, because
they believe in Jesus, and outward Jews reject the Messiah. So, if you
are a Christian and you have the faith of Jesus; (1).that proves that
you're not just an outward Jew, because an outward Jew doesn't
accept Jesus Christ; and (2) if you keep all of God's commandments,
including the Sabbath, you prove you're not following tradition or
the beast. You are receiving the seal of God, because He says •seal
the law among my disciples" [Isaiah 8:16]. The only law that the world
has rejected today, even the world of Christians, is the one that God
said to "Remember" and the world has forgotten. But God said there
would be a people that won't forget.

We're ready to understand the mark of the beast. Revelation 14:9

through 12 says,

"And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If
any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark
In his forehead, or In his hand, The same shall drink of the wine
of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the
cup of his indignation; he shall be tormented with fire and with
brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and the presence of
the LAMB: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever
and ever: and they have no rest day or night, who worship the
beast and his image, and whosoever receloeth the mark of his

Page 31
The Mark of the Beast

name. Here Is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep
the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. "

Notice, there are two things that separate or set apart those who
follow Jesus from those who follow the beast It is that those who
follow Jesus have His faith and keep the commandments of God.
Which one of the commandments did we say would be a sign between
God and His people forever? The Sabbath. Now, think it through.
Don't people who follow the beast keep eight of the commandments?
Think about it Friends, any good Catholic who obeys the teachings
of this beast system keeps eight of the commandments. A good
Catholic won't kill, won't steal, won't lie, won't commit adultery, won't
covet, won't dishonor his mother and father, won't take the name of
the Lord in vain. A good Catholic will obey eight of these
commandments. John says that [keeping] the commandments of God
is what will distinguish these people. On the one hand you've got
those who follow the beast, worship his image, and receive his mark:
but on the other hand are those "who keep the commandments of
God and have the faith of Jesus" [Revelation 14:12]. Now, the
commandment that says "thou shalt not kill" doesn't set us apart
because you can follow the beast and not kill, and you can follow
Jesus and not kill. In fact, most people who follow the beast don't
kill, because even the beast says not to kill. And so on, with eight of
the commandments. The only two commandments that people who
follow the beast do not keep, and that those who follow Jesus do keep,
are the two that have been changed; not bowing down to images, and
keeping God's sign or seal, the Sabbath, the seventh day. You see,
this is what sets God's people apart It proves that they're not
following the beast, but instead are following God's Word, irrespective
of what the world and society think. God says that in the last days
this is how we're going to know who's following the beast and who's
following Jesus. The ones who follow the beast will worship his image
and receive his mark. The ones who follow Jesus will keep His
commandments. That's why it says in Revelation 12:17 that,

lithedragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war
with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of
God and have the testimony of Jesus... "

Page 32
The Mark of the Beast

Obviously, the commandments of God are important; and obviously

one of those commandments, especially the one Daniel called
attention to that was changed, is the one dealing with the time of the
Sabbath [Daniel 7:25]. That's the one that He [God] said is the sign,
and the sign is a seal. It's the only one that gives us God's name, His
title, and His authority. It's the only one that proves that we're not
following tradition or society or the beast Instead, we're following
Jesus Christ and "every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of
God" [Matthew 4:4].

We ask the question, "what is the mark of the beast?" The seal of
God is what is the mark of His authority. The seal of God is what
proves that God is the Creator. In Exodus 20:8 and 11, God says to
remember the Sabbath day, for in six days I made heaven, and earth,
and the sea, and all that in them is [paraphrased].

Now, what is'the sign or the mark of the beast? Remember, the beast
is a polltical-religio system. What does this system [the mingling of
church and state] claim as the mark of it's authority? I can think of
no better way to know what the mark of the bea~t is than to ask the
beast Are you ready? I'm going to quote him for you. Now,
remember, no one has the mark of the beast tonight No one has the
mark of the beast now, because the mark of the beast will be enforced
by law; and when the mark of the beast is enforced as a law all over
North America, and allover the world, then people who willingly, not
ignorantly, follow the beast and obey his commandments that he has
changed, rather than God's commandments, will indeed be
worshipping his image and receiving his mark. Now, listen to the
Catholic Record of London, Ontario, September 1, 1923, "Sunday is
our mark of authority. The church is above the Bible, and this
transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact Any
Protestant who keeps Sunday acknowledges this. "

Now friends, the Catholics make a big boast about it, you see. They
say that the fact that they were able to change the day of worship
from Saturday to Sunday is proof and is the mark of their religious
authority. They've left a mark on the history of the world, because
as you go back in time, not only did the Jews keep the Sabbath, but
Christians kept the Sabbath. This is established by history. Socrates,
the church historian, writing in 430 AD. said the Christians of that

Page 33
The Mark of the Beast

time kept the Sabbath. And the Sabbath was kept in India right up
until the 1700's. It was kept in Africa by the Coptic Christians. It
was kept by the Ethiopian Christians. It was kept by the Church of
the East. It was kept in Scotland right down to the 11th century. But
when the Papacy came to power, and wherever it could force its form
of worship upon people, Sabbath was done away with and Sunday
was set up. And today the whole world is following the day that the
Catholic church has set up; so they say, "Sunday is our mark of
authority." I go on to quote to you from C. F. Thomas, the Chancellor
quoted by Cardinal Gibbons. He says, "Of course the Catholic church
claims that the change from Saturday to Sunday was her act. And
the act is the mark of her ecclesiastical power and authority in
religious matters.·

Friends, the Catholic church says there is one thing that is their mark.
Yes, they'll agree that the Sabbath is God's sign. God said His Sabbath
was a sign [Exodus 31:13]. And then they say, "But we've got a mark.
We've got a sign, a mark of our authority. And it proves that we're
above the Bible. That we can even change God's laws" [paraphrased].
If the pope changes God's law, then he changes it; but friends, I don't
believe that a man can change what God wrote with His own finger
in stone. And if God wrote, "The seventh day is the Sabbath," then
no man can come along and change it to the first day. Not without
Bible to back him up. There's no Bible to do so, and the Catholic
church admits that. In fact, they're proud of it. They say, "Here's the
proof that the Catholic church is above the Bible, because we've
changed the day, and that established the mark of our authority in
religious matters,"

Turn with me to Psalm 94 because I want to bring it all together for

you now. You see, the Bible is clear that the "deadly wound" is going
to be healed [Revelation 13:3]. In February, 1929, Mussolini in The
Lateran Treaty restored temporal power to the Pope. It's healing
already. Can you see that? Representatives of the Papacy are
travelling all over the world as they never did before. The Catholic
church is getting involved in political battles as it never did before.
It's becoming a mediator between Moslems and Jews and Buddhists
and Hindus. The pope is taking his place upon the stage of human
history as he hasn't in a thousand years. He's getting involved in
politics in Poland, in Russia and all over the world; and so we see that

Page 34
The Mark of the Beast

the deadly wound is being healed. But remember, friends, there's got
to be a church unity movement, These churches have to come
together. We know the Bible predicts that. There will be
•...BABYLONTHE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS...• with all
of her daughters [Revelation 17:5], and they're going to come together
in the last days.

Now, what do we see happening today? We see all of those churches

that came out of Romanism going back to Romanism. You know, the
Anglicans are going back home. The Lutherans are taking steps to
go back home. Friends, the churches that came out of the Catholic
faith are going back. When you try to unite people, you always
concentrate on what they agree on. You know a little bit about
psychology. You've got two people and when you want to get them
together, how do you do it? You don't talk about their differences;
you talk about what they agree on. What do all of the Christian
churches agree on today? I don't care if you're talking about
Mormons, or Jehovah's Witnesses, or Baptists, or Methodists, or
Pentecostals, or Catholics or Anglicans, or Lutherans. What do they
all agree on? The one thing they all agree on is going to church on
Sunday. That's the only day that they go to church during the
daytime. That's their day of worship. They call it the Lord's day. But
we learned last night [lecture number 8] that the Bible says that the
seventh day is the Lord's day [Exodus 20:11]. But you see, when you
want to get people together, you get them together on what they agree
on; and they're all going to agree on this. And friends, when they
come together they're going to establish a law.

It doesn't take much to convince yourself that this is the end time.
Psalm 94: 1, 2 and 5, says,

"0 LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; 0 God, to whom

vengeance belongeth, shew thyself. Lift up thyself, thou judge of
the earth; render a reward to the proud. They brake in pieces thy
people, 0 LORD, they attlict thine heritage. 1/

You see, there is going to be great tribulation before Jesus comes; but
thank God He promises that He is going to keep us. Psalm 94: 12
says,

Page 35
The Mark of the Beast

"Blessed Is the man whom thou chasteneth, 0 LORD, and teachest

him out of thy lauu"

I'm glad that God chastened me one day. Now, when you get
chastened, when you find out that you're breaking one of God's
commandments, sometimes it makes you mad. You're not always
happy. You get upset. But when you do what's right and repent,
then you'll be happy. And that's what it says here in Psalm 94:12,

"Blessed Is the man whom thou chasten est, 0 LORD, and teachest
him out of thy law. /I

Now read verse 20, Psalm 94:20,

"Shall the throne of Iniquity have fellowship with thee, which

frameth mischief by a law?"

Now, this Psalm is talking about the end of time when God will judge
the world; when they're afflicting His people, and it says "shall the
throne of iniquity." Paul talks about the "man of iniquity," the "man
of sin," the "mystery of iniquity" [2 Thessalonians 2:3, 4, 7], and he's
going to set his throne up in the temple of God. Here we're talking
about the same power. This is the mystery of iniquity that sets himself
up on the throne of Cod in the temple of Cod. Now notice. What did
this man do? He "frameth mischief by a law" [Psalm 94:20].

Friends, whenever the Devil wanted to get rid of God's people, He

made a law that contradicted God's law and that forced everybody to
obey it; and He said, "If you don't obey it, if you don't keep my law
and break God's law, I'm going to kill you." He did it to Daniel [Daniel
6], he did it through Nebuchadnezzar [Daniel 3], he did it to Baby
Moses long ago, as he attempted to kill all the babies [Exodus 2]. The
Devil has always made laws that contradicted God's law and then
persecuted Cod's people with them. Now it says,

"Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which

frameth mischief by law? They gather themselves together against
the soul of the righteous, and condemn the Innocent blood. But
the LORD Is my defence; and my God Is the rock of my refuge. /I
[Psalm 94:20-22]

Page 36
The Mark of the Beast

You see, in the time of the end, Protestantism, yes, even Protestantism,
will become an image of the beast. The image to the beast is a
resemblance to the beast. Now, what the Papacy is going to be doing
in Europe, Protestantism will be doing in North America, and we see
it already. The two horns are coming together to form one horn [a
unity of church and state]. Notice what's going on in America with
the Moral Majority. More and more Christians are getting involved
in politics. They want to make laws. When they make a universal
law for worshipping, and they want everyone to worship on that day,
then this "man of iniquity" will work great miracles [Revelation 13:13,
14]. Remember, before Jesus comes "there will be great signs and
wonders," so that "if it were possible, it would deceive the very elect"
[Matthew 24:24].

Now, what day 'are they going to choose as their world-wide

one-church day of worship? You tell me. Friends, the only day that
will suit the largest church in the world, the Roman Catholic church,
and the day that all Protestants will go along with, will be the day that
has been called "the mark of their religious authority." That day will
be enforced by law all over North America, and then all over the world.
Some people find it hard to understand how it will happen It doesn't
surprise me. If the pope went to Russia and started healing the sick
and raising the dead tomorrow, he'd have them in his pocket. One
of the three secrets of Fatima (according to the so-called apparitions
of the Virgin Mary when she appeared there) was that Russia will be
converted to her if everyone will just start saying the rosary. That
was one of the secrets of Fatima that was revealed when the so-called
Virgin Mary appeared in Portugal. And she said, "If you'll just say
the rosary, I'll convert Russia to me." Notice, not to Jesus but to me.
And friends, we see communism opening its doors. We see China
opening its doors [this lecture given in 1989]. And not only will the
gospel be preached in all the world, but a counterfeit gospel will be
preached in all the world. And what day will they exalt as the mark
of this counterfeit authority? A law will be made regarding it. The
Bible says they'll "bring mischief by a law" [Psalm 94:20]. And
whoever will not worship the beast or his image will be sentenced to
death [Revelation 13:15], because Protestants at that time will become
an image of that beast. All those who love the truth will come out of
Babylon, will accept God's teachings, will keep His commandments.
There'll be only two groups, friends: (1) those who follow the beast,

Page 37
The Mark of the Beast

" -

worship his image and receive his mark in their forehead or in their
hand [Revelation 13:16], or (2) those who have the faith of Jesus and
keep the commandments of God [Revelation 14:12]. And the time
will come when it will be black or white. Today, it's still grey. There
are many good Christians in Catholicism and in Protestantism who
are good Bible-believing Christians, born-again Christians, in those
churches; but the time will come when God's Spirit will seal His law
in their hearts and in their minds, and at that time they will either
receive it or reject it And then it will be clear whom they are
following.

I thank God that, for me and my house, we've decided to follow the
Lord. We have decided to follow Jesus. I pray that you've decided
to follow Jesus. That you've decided to ask Him to write His law in
your heart and in your mind, and that you've decided to become new
covenant Christians who keep the Sabbath as a sign that God has
given you His rest, and that He is sanctifying you and setting you
apart from the traditions of this world to keep His commandments
and live "not by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out
of the mouth of God" [Matthew 4:4].
