The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

If you have your Bibles, turn with me to Revelation 13. I am going

to briefly summarize what we have already learned about the beast
of Revelation 13. In Revelation 13:1 and 2 it says,

"Istood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of
the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten
crowns, (Now, notice that in Revelation 13 when he mentions the
/I

beast, the crowns are upon the horns.) "andupon his heads the name
of blasphemy. And the beast that I saw was like unto a leopard,
his feet were as the feet of a bear, his mouth as the mouth of a
lion: the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great
authority. "

We're going to talk about that dragon in just a moment, but we've
got to get the picture of who this beast is. Now, how can we know?
Well, we can go to the book of Daniel. In Daniel 7 we find the exact
clues that Revelation 13 mentions, and we find them described in very
concise terms, and pointing to a specific kingdom. Now, notice that
Daniel 7:23 reveals what a beast is,

"Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom .•."

So there it is. Not what I think, not what some particular church
teaches, but a "thus salth the Lord." According to Scripture the
fourth beast is the fourth kingdom. So when we're talking about a
beast, we're talking about a kingdom; not an individual, but a
kingdom. Now remember, every kingdom has a king. Every system
has a man at its head. So there must be a man at the head of the
beast's system. But the beast itself, remember, entails more than just
an individual. It says, "the fourth beast is the fourth kingdom"
[paraphrased].

Now in Daniel's prophecy in Daniel 7:2 and 3 we read,

"Danielspake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold,

the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. And four
great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. /I

Page 4
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

Now it's obvious, if the beast represents a kingdom, that we are talking
about a symbolic prophecy. And in a symbolic prophecy, we must be
consistent. The beast is a symbol, and it arises out of the sea as the
winds blow upon that sea. Now if the beast is a symbol, the sea must
also be a symbol. And we discovered that indeed it is, for John, in
Revelation 17:15, says clearly,

'~.. The waters which thou saioest ... are peoples, multitudes,
nations, and tongues. /I

He tells us that the waters, or the sea, are a symbol of civilizations.

And the beasts arise out of the sea when the winds are blowing upon
them. We looked at a number of texts in Jeremiah 51:1 and Jeremiah
25:32 that make it clear that the winds represent the winds of strife,
the winds of warfare. So a neat, clear, and concise picture is painted
for us by the prophet. He sees, in his visions, the sea The winds, or
the wars of strife, begin to agitate the multitudes, nations and tongues.
And out of that agitation arises a beast.

Now, the first beast he saw in Daniel 7, you'll remember, was a lion.
He says the first beast was a lion and it had eagle's wings [Daniel 7:4].
And, of course, we wanted to know who that lion was. We shouldn't
guess and give it our own "private interpretation" [2 Peter 1:20].
We've got to let the Bible interpret itself. And so we turn to Jeremiah
50:43 and 44, and we find the text that says Babylon shall come up
from Jordan "like a lion.· Jeremiah 4:6 and 7 confirms that indeed
Babylon, the king of the north, will come up as a lion. And so there
is no doubt. There is no guessing. The Bible says that the lion
represents Babylon.

Remember, in the days of Daniel, Babylon was still reaching its apex
of power. It was still rising to its zenith; and in Daniel's visions he
mentions the first beast, the beast that was yet reigning in his day, as
being a lion with eagle's wings. The wings, of course, are described
in Habakkuk 1:8 as the wings of eagles, and he describes the rapidity
and the speed with which the Chaldeans, which was another name
for the Babylonians, would invade the land of Judah. And so, indeed,
Babylon was a lion with eagle's wings. By the way, I should mention
that archaeologists have found that famous lshtar Gate of Babylon.
In fact, it's on display there in East Berlin, and if you were to go see
it, you would find upon the gates winged lions, which were the symbol

Page 5
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

of Babylon. A lion with eagle's wings is what is actually on those

gates.

Now Babylon arose in 606 to 605 B.C., and it was the first kingdom
that Daniel described. Then he says in Daniel 7:5,

"And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised

up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it
between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour
much Ilesh."

The Bible says that this bear lifted itself up on one side. And again,
we don't have to guess to find what that power was, for in Daniel 5:28
we are told that the kingdom that was to succeed Babylon was the
Medo-Persian Empire. That's why it says the bear lifted itself up on
one side-because the Persians became greater than the Medes. The
three ribs in it's mouth were the provinces of Lydia, Babylonia, and
Egypt; the three provinces that the Medo-Persian Empire conquered
in order to become a world kingdom. Medo-Persia conquered Babylon
in 538 B.C.

Then Daniel goes on. He says there will be a third beast or a third
kingdom, and that kingdom is described in Daniel 7 as a leopard with
four heads and four wings [Daniel 7:6]. Now remember, Babylon had
two wings of an eagle and they symbolized the speed with which
Babylon would attack; and here the leopard has four wings
representing extreme speed, extreme rapidity in conquering the
world. That's what happened, because this represents the Greek
Empire. And of course Daniel 8 makes that clear; for there he
mentions Medo-Persia in verse 20, and in verse 21 he mentions Greece
as the kingdom that would follow Medo-Persia Notice that the
prophecy of Daniel 8 mentions beasts that are different from those in
Daniel 7. This time not a bear or a leopard, instead a ram represents
Medo-Persia and a goat represents Greece.

Now it's interesting, because in the prophecy of Daniel 8, Alexander

the Great and the one united kingdom of Greece are described as a
goat with one horn. But he says that when the kingdom of Greece,
the kingdom of Alexander the Great, fell it would be divided into four
kingdoms. Now how was that shown in the prophecy of Daniel 7?

Page 6
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

By four heads. But how was it shown in the prophecy of Daniel 8?

By four horns. In fact, it says in Daniel 8:22,

"Now. that being broken, /I (meaning that horn, that great horn)
"whereas four stood up for It, four kingdoms shall stand up out of
that nation, but not In his power."

Many versions, of course, say "four horns stood up for it," for in the
context of the chapter, that's exactly what he saw happen. Four horns
came up in its place. Then he tells us that four kingdoms shall stand
up out of that nation but not in his power. We've learned that a beast
represents a kingdom; wings represent speed; heads and horns
represent kingdoms arising out of an existing kingdom; and that horns
represent the same thing. Waters represent multitudes, peoples, and
tongues; winds represent warfare and strife. God is speaking in
symbolic code language [see lectures 1 - 4 for proof-texts].

Now, people say, "Well, why did God speak that way?" I'll tell you
why, friends. Had he spoken in plain English or plain Hebrew or plain
Greek, the book never would have survived. Think it through.
Remember, back then it was treason to speak about the fall of an
empire. You just didn't talk about the fall of those empires. You
could have your head chopped off. And so God had to speak in
symbolic code language that only the wise would understand [Daniel
12:10], and indeed this is what He did.

The prophecy goes on to say that there will be a fourth beast, Greece
conquered Medo-Persia in 331 B.C., but a fourth kingdom was to arise;
and in Daniel 7 this beast is portrayed as indescribable. He says this
beast had ten horns, and he says it shall be the fourth kingdom. Of
course it represents the kingdom of Rome, for Rome is the kingdom
that conquered Greece in 168 B.C. You read in Daniel 7:7,

"After this I saw in the night visions, behold a fourth beast,

dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great
iron teeth..•
II

Now, that is a key. Iron teeth tie us into the prophecy of Daniel 2
and establish that we're on the right track. Remember that great
image of Nebuchadnezzar's dream? The head of gold represented
Babylon just as the lion does here. The chest and the arms of silver

Page 7
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

represented Medo-Persia just as the bear does here. The belly and
the thighs of brass represented Greece exactly as the leopard does.
And finally, the legs of iron represent this fourth beast, The fourth
mineral and the fourth beast are the same; they represent Rome.
That's why Daniel gives us a hint by telling us that this fourth beast
"had great iron teeth." Of course, the conclusion is inescapable. The
Roman Empire fell in 416 A.D., and when Rome fell the image of
Daniel 2 was divided into ten toes; and on the beast of Daniel 1 we
find ten horns. We've come right down the stream of history and
we've arrived at the date 416 A.D.

Now remember, friends, God is tracing down prophecy from the time
of the prophet Daniel right down to the end of the world, and He
doesn't have any blind spots or gaps. We know that when Babylon
fell, Medo-Persia arose. When Medo-Persia fell, Greece arose. When
Greece fell, Rome arose, and when Rome fell, the ten horns arose.
Now here's where some interpreters of prophecy get all confused.
Some people are still looking for the fall of the Roman Empire down
in the future. They need to study history, because if they did, they'd
discover that Rome has already fallen. I have with me a history book,
my college history book. It's not a religious book, written by
Wallbank, Taylor, and Bailey, entitled Civilization. Past and Present.
This book mentions the ten toes or ten tribes that invaded Western
Europe when Rome fell. When Rome fell in 416 A.D., the Roman
Empire was broken up, and barbarian hordes invaded the Western
Roman Empire and, of course, settled there in Western Europe.

Now what were those ten horns or ten toes? Remember, when Rome
fell, ten nations arose in Western Europe. At first there were more
than ten, or maybe fewer than ten, but as time went on they coalesced,
they grouped together; and as you study you find those ten nations
emerging as the major powers of Europe. Now, there were the
Vandals, the Heruli and the Oslrogoths. There were the Anglo-Saxons,
the Franks, the Alemanni, the Vtstgoths, the Suevi, the Lombards and
the Burgundlans. Now you recognize seven of those. The
Anglo-Saxons are the English. The Franks, of course, are the French.
The Vlsigoths are the Spanish. The Alemanni are the Germans. The
Suevi are the Portuguese. The Lombards are the Italians, and the
Burgundians are the Swiss. Those you understand. But what about
the Heruli, the Vandals, and the Ostrogothsr Well, you've heard

Page 8
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

about vandalism, haven't you? You see, we get that word "vandalism"
from the Vandals. They came and vandalized Rome. The Heruli were
a tribe that were related to the Huns. You've heard of Attila the Hun.
The Heruli were one of those barbarian tribes that attacked the
Western Roman Empire. And then there were the Ostrogoths, The
Goths were a very well-known power. Any history book will mention
the Goths. Now, what happened to the Heruli, the Vandals, and the
Ostrogoths] Well, notice what it says in Daniel. As we go on you'll
see how this all comes together in helping us to identify who this
beast of Revelation 13 actually is. It says in Daniel 7:8,

"/ considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them
another little horn... "

Now remember, as we talk about these horns, we're also talking about
the toes or the nations. Remember, Daniel 8:22 says that the four
horns are four kingdoms, and if Daniel 8:22 says the four horns are
four kingdoms, then the ten horns must be ten kingdoms. But
remember, all kingdoms have a man at their head, or a king. And so
at times, when the Bible talks about the beasts, it talks about them
as kingdoms. So it does with horns. It mentions them as kingdoms.
At other times it simply mentions the king who is at the head of that
kingdom as representing the kingdom in its whole, or in its entirety.
So don't be confused by the fact that in the Bible sometimes the beasts
are mentioned in the singular sense. A beast can be considered as a
"he." In the French version it's considered a "she." And yet, it's the
symbol that's being considered. It represents the nation. When we
talk about ten horns or those ten nations in Europe, Daniel 7:8 says,

".../ considered the horns and, behold, there came up among them
another little horn.... "

The little horn came up among the ten. We want to know who that
little horn is because that little horn is the key to understanding who
this beast is. That little horn had to arise in Western Europe. It had
to arise among the ten nations right there in Western Europe.
Furthermore, it says in Daniel 7:24,

'~nd the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten Icings that shall
arise: and another shall rise atter them.•."

Page 9
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

Of course it's logical, isn't it? If it arises among the ten, then it must
arise after them, for the ten were there when it arose. You should
understand that when we say it would arise among the ten and after
the ten, it would arise as a horn among the ten and after the ten. It
does not mean that this system or this power did not exist prior to
that, but it could not be considered a horn until this time. A horn
represents a kingdom; but as we'll see, this is a different type of
kingdom. This little horn is different.

Now, it goes on to say, as we look at the clues a little further, that it

would come up among the ten, it would come up after the ten; and it
specifically says in verse 24,

'~..shall arise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and
he shall subdue three kings. /I

So, this little horn was to subdue three of the preceding horns or
three of the preceding kingdoms. In fact, it's important to notice in
Daniel 7:8 that it specifies that this little horn would pluck up by the
roots three of the first horns. Listen to it closely,

/II considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them
another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns
plucked up by the roots ... n

Now, I emphasized that word first because it's important that you
realize that this little horn would pluck up three of the first horns.
That makes it clear that we're talking about history, doesn't it? You
see, we can't place this down at the end of time, friends, because it
says this little horn would pluck up three of the first horns. Who
were three of the first European nations who made war on the Roman
Empire? The three horns represent the Heruli, the Vandals, and the
Ostrogoths; three of those barbarian tribes that were arising back
then out of the broken-down Roman Empire. Now, it's true that since
then there have been other horns. Since the fall of those three there
have been other nations that have arisen in Europe.

I remember, when I was at Oral Roberts University, they were all

excited because there were nine nations in the common market, And
everybody was so sure that as soon as one more nation joined that
would be ten, and the end of the world would come, for the ten horns

Page 10
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

were there. I'd snicker, because I knew that the prophecy talked
about three of the first horns, and I knew that Rome had fallen a long
time ago, back in 476 AD., and that the horns, or the ten nations of
Europe, had been around for a long time. But you see, as you come
down to our day, it's true that other nations arose. It's true that now
[19891 there are thirteen nations in the European common market,
Obviously, when we read this prophecy it's clear that we're talking
about history, because it says that this little horn would subdue three
of the first horns.

We're talking about a little horn that would arise back in history, after
the fall of the Roman Empire, and become a kingdom. It would arise
in Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD.,
and it would subdue three of the first horns. It would have to be in
Europe while those three horns were still there.

Now, ('II give you a date that's Important, It was in 538 AD. that the
Ostrogothic kingdom was defeated, and the last of the three horns,
the Heruli, the Vandals, and the Ostrogoths, were totally wiped out,
Their armies were defeated and their annihilation was completely
made sure. That's why today you can't even find traces of those
nations. You can find the Anglo-Saxons, you can find the Franks, you
can find the Alemanni and the others, but you cannot find the Herull,
the Vandals, and the Ostrogoths. Their armies were defeated. Their
civilizations were wiped out and obliterated. And the Bible is clear
that this little horn would have to come up around that time and
become a kingdom or a horn. Daniel 7:8 continues,

'~..in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth
speaking great things. /I

So it's clear that this horn would have a man at its head. All kingdoms
have a man at their head, but this one especially-a man with eyes that
see for it; a man with a mouth that speaks for it, Furthermore, the
Bible says that it was "diverse." We already read that in verse 24.
And then it says that it would "speak great things." In verse 25 it
says he will "speak great words against the most High." And we'll
see what that means, as we turn to Revelation, in a little more detail.
But as we go on we have another clue, because it says in [Daniel 7]
verse 21,

Page 11
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

"l beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints ... H

It made war with the saints. And then, of course, as we go on we find

a few more clues, the last two from Daniel 7:25. This little horn would

think to change times and laws:" (and the saints of Cod would be
I~ ••

delivered) '~••into his hand until a time, times and dividing of time. II

Right away we ask ourselves, "Well. what is a time, times and dividing
of time?" And we come up with the answer. But remember, it didn't
come from Daniel, it came from Revelation. That's why we must study
these two books together. Turn with me now to Revelation 12:14. It
says,

"Andto the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she
might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is
nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of
the serpent. "

Now let me ask you a question. Is this literal or symbolic, friends?

This woman receives two wings of an eagle and flies into the
wilderness. Well, all commentators agree that this is a symbol. And
how is this time, times, and half a time described in the same symbolic
prophecy? Well, notice what it says in Revelation 12:6,

'~nd the woman tled into the wilderness, where she hath a place
prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two
hundred and threescore days. II

So we know that a time, times, and half a time is 1260 days, but what
is this 1260-day period equal to? Look at Revelation 13. It's
important that this little horn would reign for a time, times, and
dividing of time, according to Daniel, or 1260 days according to
Revelation. In Revelation 13 we read the same thing about the beast,
It says in Revelation 13:5,

'itnd there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things... "

Does that sound familiar? That's exactly what Daniel says about the
little horn [Daniel 7:8]. Notice that what Daniel says about the little
horn, John says about the beast, We're talking about the same

Page 12
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

kingdom, the same system, the same power. It says that the beast
would "speak great things against the most Hlgh." Here it says that
there was "given unto him a mouth speaking great things and
blasphemies." When you speak great things against Cod, you're
speaking blasphemies. Now what does it mean to speak blasphemies?
Well, I'll give you two texts. Luke 5:21 says,

'~nd the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, who
is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God
alone. "

So, it clearly says that it's blasphemy when a man claims to forgive
sin. They said that this man "speaketh blasphemies. Who can forgive
sin but Cod alone?" Now remember, they were mistaken in that case
because the man was no ordinary man. The man was the Cod-man,
Jesus Christ, John 1:1 says,

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God."

And yet, as we look at another text, it becomes clear that there's

another definition of blasphemy. Not only is it blasphemy for a human
to claim the authority to forgive sins, but it's blasphemy when a man
claims the titles and attributes of Cod, or the names of Cod. In John
10:30 Jesus said,

"I and my Father are one. "

And then of course, in John 10:32 and 33, Jesus says to the Pharisees
when they want to stone Him, for what good work do you want to
stone Me? And they said, not for a good work, [paraphrased],

"... but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man makest
thyself God."

So Jesus, in claiming the title "Father" said, "I and my Father are
one." The Jews automatically accused Him of blasphemy. And then
He answered, "Well, for what good work do you want to stone Me?"
And they said, "Not for a good work but for blasphemy because you,
who are a man, are making yourself Cod" [paraphrased]. Of course,

Page 13
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

it was not blasphemy for Jesus to claim that, because Isaiah 9:6 had
already spoken of the Messiah in these terms,

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the

government shall be upon his shoulder: his name shall be called
Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father,
The Prince of Peace. /I

So surely Jesus could say, "I and my Father are one." But as we look
at the prophecy, it's clear that this little horn is getting into religious
matters. He's speaking great things against the Most High and it's
called blasphemy. No wonder the prophet said it would be a different
[diverse] type of kingdom [Daniel 7:24]. Now it says it would make
war on the saints. Notice in Revelation 13:7, this is said of the beast,

''it was given unto him to make war with the saints ... 1/

Why friends, this is an actual quotation, word for word, from Daniel
7:211 John wants us to understand very clearly that this little horn
represents the same kingdom as the beast of Revelation 13.
Remember, a beast represents a kingdom, and a horn represents a
kingdom God is simply picturing, under two different symbols, the
same system or kingdom

And then it goes on to say, of course, that this beast would reign for
how long? Notice Revelation 13:5,

"there was given unto him a mouth speaking great thlngs ..•and
power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. II

Now, there are 30 days in a Bible month, and so 42 x 30 = 1260.

We're talking about the same period of time! The little horn reigns
for a time, times, and half a time [dividing of time] which, according
to Revelation, is 1260 days; and the beast reigns, according to the
text, for 42 months.

Now here's what we have to answer: are we talking about a literal

beast? Are we talking about a literal sea that the beast rises up out
of? Are we then talking about literal months? You see, it says the
beast will reign for 42 months. But if we make the months literal, if
we make the days literal, we've got to make the beast literal, and we've

Page 14
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

got to make the wings of the eagle on the woman literal. If we're
going to make these literal, then the problem is: how do we put literal
time on symbolic beasts? Remember, everything we're dealing with
here is symbolic. There is a key in prophecy that helps us understand
this. But you know, even if we didn't have those texts, we should be
able to see it. The prophecy of Daniel begins in the day of the prophet.
He says, of course, that in his day there would be a kingdom, Babylon,
and then he goes down [the list]: Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome. Then
he mentions the rise of the European nations and says a little horn
is going to arise. In the prophecy of Daniel this little horn continues
until the time of the end [Daniel 7:22]. So we're talking about a
kingdom that would arise around the fall of the Roman Empire and
become a kingdom in its own right, and continue until the end of
time. And so, obviously, this time period of "a time, times, and half a
time," or 1260 days, is not simply 3 1/2 literal years, but a long period
of time; for Rome fell a long time ago. If that power would be there
in the time of the fall of the Roman Empire, and still be here at the
second coming of Christ, it must reign for a long period of time. That
becomes clear as we study the prophecy of Revelation as well. You
see, everything is going to confirm itself. But let's look at those texts
that we considered before.

You are familiar with the prophecy of the 70 weeks of Daniel 9, where
it says that "Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people ..." and
then talks about the coming of the Messiah after 69 weeks [Daniel
9:24, 25]. Now 69 weeks are 483 literal days. Did Jesus come 483
days or 69 weeks after the going forth of that decree? No. In fact, I
find it very amusing that all scholars and commentators agree that in
Daniel 9 the days are not literal. And yet some scholars, for some
reason, as they come to the prophecy of Daniel 7, which is clearly
symbolic, insist on making it literal. They come to Revelation 2:10
and read about the ten days of tribulation to the Smyrna church, and
they will agree that the ten days are the ten years of Dlocletian's
persecution from 303 to 313 A.D.

They'll agree that in Revelation 2:10 the ten days are ten years. But
then they'll come down to this prophecy in Revelation 13, and they'll
attempt to make the days literal. Friends, in a symbolic prophecy we
should be consistent and see symbolic time.

Page 15
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

What do the days represent? Well, all the scholars agree on Daniel
9. It's a shame they don't continue to agree, as did the pioneers of
Protestantism. What I'm saying tonight I can confirm from a book
entitled The Prophetic Faith of Our Fathers. This actually has quotes
from the writings of Luther, from the writings of Calvin, from the
writings of Wesley, from the writings of Zwingll, Jerome and Huss -
all of those reformers of old who founded the Protestant churches.
They all agreed basically with what I am saying. They all agreed as
to who this beast of Revelation 13 was, and they all agreed that these
42 months or 1260 days are exactly what God says they are. Ezekiel
4:6 says,

"I have appointed thee each day (or a year."

In Numbers 14:34 that same formula is repeated. God says,

'~.. each day (or a year ... "

So, according to the Bible, in symbolic prophecy each day represents

a year. And that's what everybody agrees; because when they read
about the 69 weeks, which would be 483 days, they all agree that
those 483 days are actually 483 years. From the going forth of the
decree, Jesus did come 483 years later. Not literal days, but years.
As we look at this prophecy, this is the only thing that makes sense.
For, you see, Daniel says the Roman Empire would fall, and up would
come the nations of Europe. A little horn would arise among them.
It would begin its reign in 538 when the Ostrogoths were subdued,
and it would continue for 1260 years. Now friends, that brings us
down to the "time of the end" when the gospel began to be "preached
in all the world for a witness" [Matthew 24: 14]. And Jesus made it
clear that it would go on for a period of time, and "then shall the end
come." Daniel 7:25 makes it clear that this time, times, and half a
time ["dividing of time"] has to bring you down to what verse 26 calls
the time of the judgement, And then it says,

"But thejudgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion,
to consume and to destroy it unto the end. "

So you have the time, times, and half a time and then, of course, you
have "the end."

Page 16
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

Now without that understanding you make no sense out of the

prophecy. You give Cod a 1260-year blind spot. You claim that once
the Roman Empire fell Cod didn't know what would happen, and
nothing has happened, and that all that matters is the three and a half
literal years at the end of time. John wrote clearly in Revelation 1:1,

'~..shew unto his servants things which must shorlly come to

pass... "

Now think about that. These are things which must shortly come to
pass. In fact, Cod told John not to seal the prophecy of this Book.
Read it in Revelation 22:10,

'~..Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time
is at hand."

You see friends, these prophecies were shortly to come to pass, and
the Bible says that the dragon would give his power to the beast
[Revelation 13:2].

Now, we're going to add another clue by discovering who this dragon
is. Let's look at this dragon once again. In Revelation 12:3 we're
going to discover more about this dragon. It says,

"thereappeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red

dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon
his heads."

If you have one of the newer versions or a King James version with
margins, you'll notice that the word "wonder" there is the word sign.
This is a symbol, a sign. Remember, the Devil doesn't look anything
like that. He's an angel of light. He's perfect in wisdom, perfect in
beauty, according to Ezekiel 28. And so he doesn't really look like a
dragon. This is a sign or a symbol of how the Devil will work through
the nations of the world.

"/ beheld a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns,
and seven crowns upon his heads." [paraphrased]

Now do you notice the difference between the dragon and the beast?
They both have seven heads and ten horns. But the dragon has seven

Page 17
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

crowns upon his heads, whereas the beast has ten crowns upon his
horns. This is a key that will help us discover who this dragon
represents and, of course, what head was reigning in the days when
John wrote the book of Revelation. Turn with me to Revelation 17:9,

"And here Is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are
seven mountains. on which the woman sitteth. "

Now it says, "the seven heads are seven mountains," and notice it says
that, "here is the mind which hath wisdom." And we'll see that it has
a double application. There is a city, because Revelation 17:18 says,

"the woman which thou sawest is that great city. which reigneth
over the kings of the earth. "

Now what was the city that was reigning over the kings of the earth
in the days of John? Rome. So, as we look at this prophecy, we
remember that Rome was a city that literally sat upon seven hills.
Rome was called the seven-hilled city. In fact, upon the coins of the
Roman Empire was a picture of a woman sitting upon seven hills!
Archaeologists have found these coins. They're on record in
museums. Indeed Rome was the seven-hilled city. But notice again
Revelation 17:9 and 10. There is more to it It says,

"hereis the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven
mountains. on which the woman sitleth. And there are seven
kings ... "

You see, the seven mountains represent seven kings or kingdoms.

Remember that in Jeremiah 51:25 God said that Babylon was, "a
destroying mountain." God represents kingdoms as mountains.
Babylon was a destroying mountain. In fact, Isaiah 2:2 says,

'~.. in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house shall
be established in the top of the mountains ... "

So Jeremiah 51:25 and Isaiah 2:2 make it clear that mountains

represent kingdoms, and in the end of time God's kingdom will be
above all kingdoms.

Page 18
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

The seven mountains are seven kings, and where there are kings, of
course, there are kingdoms. Now notice what it says in Revelation
17:10 and 11,

"And there are seven kings: five are fal/en, and one is, and the
other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a
short space. And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the
eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. 1/

Now listen, here is the question [that we have] to answer. When is

the angel talking? What is the angel saying when he says "five are
fallen"? 15 he talking in the days of John? That would be the natural
way to understand it, wouldn't it? The angel comes to John; John
wants to know. Who is this woman sitting on seven mountains? Why
does this dragon have seven heads and ten horns? The answer comes:
"The seven heads are seven mountains," which are seven kings or
kingdoms, but "five are fallen." We can prove that the angel was saying
this in the days of John, or about the time 95 A.D., by the following
verse. Read what it says in Revelation 17:12,

"And the ten horns which thou sauiest are ten kings, which have
received no kingdom as yet... II

Now friends, that proves that this had to be said in the time of the
Apostle John, because today it could not be said that the ten horns
"have received no kingdom." Today it could not be said that the ten
toes have no kingdoms. France has had a kingdom for a long time.
England has been a kingdom for a long time, also Germany and Spain.
The only time when the angel could truly say the ten horns have
"received no kingdom as yet," was back in the days of John. That's
why, when he describes the dragon, he says it had seven heads and
ten horns but the crowns were not yet upon the horns. The crowns
were still on the heads because the horns had received no kingdom
as yet That was still future. But when he gets to the beast he says
in Revelation 13:1, that he saw a beast that had seven heads and ten
horns. But now the 10 crowns are on the 10 horns.

"Istood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of
the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten
crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. I'

Page 19
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

Don't you see, friends? That's why these were things that would
shortly come to pass, because the beast was to reign during the same
time as these ten horns. It says he would arise, "among the ten." In
fact, the following part of Revelation 17:12 makes it clear,

'itnd the ten horns which thou sauiest are ten kings, which have
received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour
with the beast. /I

So these ten horns "receive power as kings one hour with the beast"
Now don't let the words "one hour" throw you. Jesus said in John
5:25,

'~.. The hour Is coming, and now Is, when the dead hear the voice
of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. /I

Now, was he talking about 60 minutes? No. He was talking about

this hour of salvation. This hour of grace. The word "hour" in the
Greek is the word hora from which we get our word "era" In fact, it
could be translated, as many commentators indeed translate it, but
they, the ten kings, "receive power as kings one hour" or "the same
era." The word mia hora in the Greek, means "the same era" This
little horn, or the beast of Revelation 13, reigns during the same era
as the beast or as the ten horns. The ten horns reign during the same
era with the beast, Now this is going to confirm more of what we
know. You see, when the Roman Empire fell, the nations of Europe
became kingdoms. Clovis was the first king of the Franks and reigned
in Europe in the years 506 ·508. Clovis was already reigning over
the Franks. The kingdoms of Europe began at the fall of the Roman
Empire.

When did the kingdoms of Europe fall? At the end of the 1260 years.
From 538 A.D., the date that begins the fall of the Ostrogothlc
kingdom and that marks the establishment of this little horn as a
kingdom in Europe, we add 1260 years and we come down to 1798.
Now it's interesting that it says that the beast and these horns are
going to be kings and kingdoms during the same era And during
what we know as the Dark Ages or the Middle Ages, all of the powers
of Europe were indeed kingdoms; so was this little horn. But at the
same time this little horn received a "deadly wound" [Revelation 13:3],
the kingdoms of Europe were becoming democracies. They were

Page 20
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

losing their kings. What happened in France just before the end of
the 1260 years? There was the French Revolution. The kingdoms of
Europe began tb go down and England became a democracy, and
although there is still a queen, she's not much of a queen as far as
authority goes. The prophecy links this beast with the kings of Europe.
And it specifically says that they would reign during the "one hour"
or the same era, the mia hora of the prophecy. And so, you see,
everything is confirming itself. Now, what does it mean when it says
that the seven heads of the dragon are seven kingdoms; "five are
fallen, one is, and the other is not yet come"? [Revelation 17:10]

Very simply this: you see, five had indeed fallen in the days of John.
What was the kingdom that was ruling in the days of John? It was
the Roman Empire. What were the five that were fallen? Going
backwards, Greece was the fifth that had fallen; Medo-Persia was the
fourth that had fallen; Babylon was the third that had fallen.
Remember that there were two persecuting world empires before
Babylon. Daniel simply did not mention them because that had already
fallen off the stage of history. This is the same reason he doesn't
mention Babylon in chapter 8 of his prophecy, because Babylon is on
the way out. So he did not mention the two preceedlng world empires
that were, indeed, persecuting empires that persecuted the people of
God. What were these two kingdoms? Egypt first of all, and then
Assyria. Remember, Egypt was the first persecuting world empire. In
fact, let me share with you that in Ezekiel 32:2 Egypt is called a "young
whale." But in the margin and in the original Hebrew the word there
is a young dragon. Egypt is actually called a dragon according to
the margin, even in the King James version. So Egypt was the first
head of the dragon. Assyria, with its capital at Nineveh, was the
second head of the dragon. Then came Babylon, Medo-Persia, and
Greece. Five were fallen in the days of John. "One is," which was the
Roman Empire; the other was "not yet come" [Revelation 17:10].

What was the one that was to come and last a short space? Why, that
was Christian Rome. When the Roman Empire converted, the empire
changed. Constantine became a Christian. The entire empire changed
its face and changed its symbol. In fact, do you know what the symbol
of the Roman Empire was in the days of John?

Page 21
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman
»:

Adam Clarke, the great Methodist commentator, in his Commentary

on Revelation 12:3, page 1010, says, "The dragon was the principal
standard or symbol of the Roman Empire." But remember, when
Constantine was converted, the cross replaced the dragon and the
eagle as the symbols of the Roman Empire. Constantine said, "In this
sign thou shalt conquer. Christian Rome lasted but a short space;
I

then there would be an eighth kingdom which would be of the seven.

And he specifically tells us that this eighth kingdom would be the
beast that would receive "a deadly wound," after which it would be
"healed" [Revelation 13:3, 12].

And so we find the entire prophecy coming together. "Five are fallen
and one is." The Roman Empire was the sixth head, the pagan Roman
Empire. That's why, if you go to Revelation 12:4 you can see that very
clearly in what is said in the second part of that verse.

'~..the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be

delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. /I

Now friends, who was this child who was born to the woman and
"caught up unto God, and to His throne?" [Revelation 12:5] Obviously
this child is Jesus Christ, As soon as Jesus Christ was born, the Devil
sought to kill Him. How did the Devil seek to kill Him? Through the
Roman Empire. Remember Herod? Herod was a Roman puppet king,
and it was through him that the Devil sought to kill the baby Jesus
[Matthew 2:13]. So indeed, the dragon represents the Roman Empire,
the sixth head, which was reigning in the days of John. And it was
this sixth head that sought to kill the baby Jesus as soon as He was
born [Revelation 12:4]. Now we're going to understand what is said
in Revelation 13:2,

"And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, his feet were
as the feet of a bear, his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the
dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. /I

So this beast was to receive "his power, and his seat and great
authority" from the dragon, which we know represents the Roman
Empire, and which was the last empire that preceded this beast, The
Christian Roman Empire was to continue "a short space,' but then it
was to give its power, its seat and great authority to the beast, which

Page 22
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

would reign with the kingdoms of Europe for 1260 symbolic days or
literal years, bringing us down to the time of the end.

It's obvious that there's only one thing that could be considered the
seat of the dragon. Notice the dragon is going to give to the beast
"his power, and his seat and great authority.· What would you
consider the seat of the dragon? Remember, we're not talking about
a mythical dragon; we're talking about a kingdom. The sixth head of
the dragon and indeed the seventh head, which was to continue a
short time, pagan and Christian Rome, did have a seal If I were to
ask you, what is the seat of Russia, or what is the seat of America, or
what is the seat of Canada, or what is the seat of France; the answers
are pretty obvious, aren't they? The seat of the Russian government
is Moscow. The seat of the United States government is Washington.
The seat of the Canadian government is Ottawa. The seat of the
French government is Paris. The place or seat of the government
from which that government rules is called the seal

And so the seat of the dragon would be Rome. The seat of the dragon
at that time was the city of Rome, which was the seat of the Roman
Empire. And in the Bible it says that the dragon would give "to the
beast his power, his seat and great authority." And so we add the last
clue on the list, which must be that this power must arise, not only
in Europe butin the city of Rome.

Now friends, all this comes together. You'll remember that it wasn't
long after Constantine was converted to Christianity that he decided
to move his empire from the city of Rome down to Constantinople.
In fact, let me read to you a few statements written by historians of
repute that I find very interesting. I'm quoting from a statement that
is found in the book The History of the Christian Church, page 40:
"The popes filled the place of the vacant emperors at Rome, inheriting
their power, prestige and the titles from paganism. Constantine left
all to the Bishop of Rome. The Papacy is but the ghost of the deceased
Roman Empire, sitting crowned, upon it's grave." And here's another
quote from LaBanca, a professor of history in the University of Rome:
"To the succession of the caesars came the succession of the pontiffs
in Rome. When Constantine left Rome he gave his seat to the pontiff,"
And here's a quote from the American Catholic Quarterly Review,
April, 1911: "Long ages ago when Rome, through neglect of the

Page 23
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

Western emperors, was left to the mercy of barbarous hordes, the

~omans turned to one figure for aid and protection and asked him
to rule them; and thus commenced the temporal sovereignty of the
popes. And meekly stepping to the throne of the caesars, the Vicar
of Christ took up the scepter to which the emperors and kings of
Europe were to bow in reverence through so many ages."

Now I'll quote you just one more from a Catholic history book, Papal
Rights and Privileges, pages 13 and 14: "When the Roman Empire
became Christian and the peace of the church was guaranteed, the
emperor left Rome to the pope, to be the seat of the authority of the
Vicar of Christ, who should reign there independent of all human
authority, to the consummation of ages, to the end of time." This is
a Catholic book and they actually use the words of the prophecy ["his
seat, and great authority" Revelation 13:2].

Here's another one, The Rise of the Medieval Church, page 168: "The
removal of the capital of the empire from Rome to Constantinople in
330 left the Western Church practically free from imperial power to
develop its own form of government The Bishop of Rome in the seat
of the caesars was now the greatest man in the West, and was soon
forced to become the political as well as the spiritual head."

I want to make something clear before we go any further. It's obvious

that there's only one kingdom that fits the marks of prophecy. The
identifying clues can fit no other system. By saying this, are we saying
that all Catholics are going to hell? No! Do not misunderstand what
I'm saying. We want to speak the truth in love. We said that
Nebuchadnezzar was the man at the head of a beast's system. And
yet he was born-again. He gave his heart to God, confessed his sins,
and we're going to see him in the kingdom of God. Cyrus was the
man at the head of the Medo-Persian beast system and yet Isaiah 44:28
says of him,

'~..lIe is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure... /I

And He actually calls Cyrus "his anointed" [Isaiah 45:1]. Apparently

Cyrus indeed was a believer in the true God of Israel and we'll see
him in the kingdom of God.

Page 24
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

We talk about Greece as a beast. Does that mean that all Greeks are
hell-bound? Of course not. We talk about Rome as a beast. Does
that mean that all Italians are lost? Of course not. Now if you leave
here saying, "Well, this preacher has got it in for the Catholics,' then
I've got it in for my own mother and father and most of my family
because I grew up in a Catholic home. I grew up in a Catholic family
and there are good people in every church. We're not condemning
individuals. We're not condemning people. If God was doing that
then He condemned all of the English, all of the French, all of the
Germans, all of the Spanish; all of the Portuguese and every other
nation because we're all a bunch of "horns. " In fact, Canada is a beast.
It's a beaver. America is a beast. It's an eagle. You see, God is doing
nothing more than what cartoonists do. He's picturing empires and
nations as beasts. Now, what causes us to be lost is not the fact that
we happen to be born to a particular beast, but that we reject the
regenerating power of the Holy Spirit that helps us to be born-again.
The important thing is that we are born-again [John 3:3].

But let's just briefly look at the clues. There's only one system that
matches all the clues; because only the power of the Papacy arose in
Western Europe in the very city of Rome. Only the Papacy arose as
a kingdom after the ten. The Papacy was already working in Europe
before that. Remember, Paul said that there would 'come a falling
away first.' Now you see, a lot of people are still looking for that
falling away. You'll find that statement in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 where
Paul says,

':..that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first •••"

And many people say, "Well, the falling away hasn't happened yet.'
Oh yes, it has. In fact, in Acts 20:29 Paul says,

'1 know this, that atter my departing grievous wolves shall enter
In among you, not sparing the flock. n

So Paul said that the falling away would happen after his death. In
fact, 1 John 2:18 and 19 makes it clear that it did. After Paul died,
John, writing his epistle, says,

':..ye have heard that ant/christ will come, even now are there
many antlchrists ... They went out from us..•"

Page 25
The Beast: the Dragon, and the Woman
,"....

So according to John, even then there had been a falling away and
antichrists had begun to arise. Now what were antichrists?
Remember I shared with you from my Greek dictionary that the word
"anti", according to the Greek Lexicon, means someone who sets
himself up instead of, or in the place of, or in behalf of. So antichrist
would be someone who takes the place of Christ. And John makes it
clear that was already starting by saying that "these are things which
must shortly come to pass." The falling away was already happening.
That's why in 1 John 5:21 it says,

"Little children, keep yourself from idols."

Idolatry was already creeping into the church. The falling away had
begun as the apostles were laid to rest. Paul says, in 2 Thessalonians
2:7,

"Forthe mystery of iniquity doth already work... "

You talk about a slow-working mystery! If nothing has happened yet;

if we are still looking for this beast off in the future; if he hasn't come
to the scene of history yet; then friends, that's the slowest-working
mystery I've ever seen. If it was working in the days of Paul and
nothing has happened yet, who's to claim anything is ever going to
happen? But Jesus said in Revelation 1:1, that these are

"things which must shortly come to pass... "

And friends, what Jesus said He meant, because He told John in

Revelation 22:10,

"Seal not...this book: for the time is at hand."

He knew that the Roman Empire was, even then, beginning to weaken.
And as the gospel would be preached, it would weaken more and more
until it would crumble, and out of the ashes of the Roman Empire
would arise a beast that would take its seal

What would this beast be? Obviously it would be a religious power.

Notice, after it had subdued three and became a horn or a kingdom
in Europe, it would have a man at the head that would speak for it -
great things, blasphemies. It would claim the authority to forgive sins.

Page 26
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

It would claim the authority to take the titles and attributes of God.
The book Catholic Truths has the imprimatur on it showing that it is
official Catholic doctrine, and in it is an actual letter or encyclical of
Pope .Leo XIII. In this he actually said, "We hold upon this earth the
place of God Almighty."

I'm not just quoting things off the top of my head. I've got proof of
this. In fact, in the Encyclopedia of Catholic Doctrine under the article
"Pope," it reads as follows: "The Pope is of so great dignity, so exalted,
that he is not a mere man but, as it were, God and the Vicar of God."
And then in the book The Authority of the Councils it reads, "All the
names which in Scriptures are applied to Christ, by virtue of which it
is established that He, Christ, is over the church. All the same names
are applied to the pope."

We know that the very word papa means "father." Jesus said you
have but one Father, which is in Heaven. And Jesus said in Matthew
23:9,

'ltnd call no man your father upon the earth ... "

And so, as we search the Scriptures, it's obvious that when the man
at the head of this system began to claim the authority to forgive sins;
and began to take the names and titles of God to himself; it's obvious
that he overstepped his ground. The "falling away" had come. And
Paul calls him the "man of sin" [2 Thessalonians 2:3}. That word "sin"
here is not the word hamartia but another word, which means
"lawlessness.· He is the man of lawlessness. Remember that he
would think to change times and laws. What law? Exodus 20:3 and
4 says,

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven Image ... "

That's not the law of Moses. The laws of Moses were nailed to the
cross. We're talking about the law of God. It was God who said this.
He wrote it with His own finger in stone. And friends, far be it from
the apostles to have statues and images and bow down to them. But
as the falling away came, John had to say, in 1 John 5:21,

"Little children, keep yourselves from idols."

Page 27
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

And indeed, this system and the man at its head made it legal and all
right for Christians to begin bowing down to statues. So idolatry came
in. No wonder this individual is called "the man of lawlessness.·
Where would he set himself up? Paul says in 2 Thessalonians 2, verse
4, that he would set himself up in the temple of God. And again,
there are some people who say, "Oh, yes. The Jews are going to build
a temple in Israel, and someone is going to get in there and do
so-and-so." Friends, if the Jews build a temple in Israel, more power
to them, but it wouldn't make it the temple of God. Paul considers
only one thing on this earth the temple of God. He refers to the
church in 1 Corinthians 3: 16,

I~ •• ye are the temple of God... [writing to the church at Corinth],

II

And in Ephesians 2:21 and 22 he says,

"In whom all the building fitly framed together..• an habitation of

God through the Spirit. II

The church is the temple of God. Your body is the temple of the Holy
Ghost [1 Corinthians 6:19], and the church is the body of Christ. We
are the temple of God, and Paul said that this "falllng away" would
come in right among the church. He said it will come "in among you."
It will set itself up in the temple of God.

"ForI know this, after my departing shall grievous wolves enter

In among you... [Acts 20:29]
II

And so the falling away, indeed, came right into the temple of God.
And then it was to continue 1260 years from the time that the Papacy
became a kingdom. Now remember, it was a religious system; but as
Rome was left vacant it became a political as well as a spiritual
kingdom. At that moment it became a beast. A beast is simply a
kingdom, and any time a religion becomes a political force and a
political power, it becomes a beast. It's gotten into politics; and that's
exactly what happened with the Papacy. They, at first, were simply
religious leaders, bishops in Rome; eventually they became the kings
of Rome, the kings of Europe. In fact, to this day the Papacy is a
kingdom. Remember that a number of years ago the American
government sent an ambassador to the Vatican. Now let me ask a
question: does the Baptist church have an ambassador sent to it?

Page 28
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

Does the Pentecostal church have an ambassador sent to it? There's

no church that gets an ambassador sent to it except the Catholic
church, and they don't send it to the church; they send it to the
Vatican, to the Papacy, which they recognize as being a kingdom. The
Vatican has its own army, its own money, its own stamps, its own
territory, its own passports. It is more than a religious system; it is
indeed a beast [a kingdom in prophecy].

And again, by saying that, I'm not condemning individuals any more
than I'm condemning America by calling it an eagle, or Canada by
calling it a beaver. No, friends, we're talking about the system and
the things it would do in history. God revealed what would take place
in history. It would "make war on the saints." Friends, for 1260 years
there was what was called the Inquisition. I have with me Fox's Book
of Martyrs and he agrees that the beast "vexed and wasted the church
of God during what is known as the Dark Ages.' The Inquisition
indeed made "war on the saints." Thus, the only system that fits all
the identifying clues is the Papacy.

Now, let me answer one more question: why is this beast described
as having the mouth of a lion, the feet of a bear, and the body of a
leopard with ten horns? Why all this mixed-up system in one beast?
You can see it's made up of all the beasts that have gone before it.
Why? Because the teachings of the beast were to mix Christianity
with pagan doctrine and paganism. Now I'll give you just two
examples. Listen closely, because I'm not making a big issue of these
two examples; I just want to share with you how easy it was for pagan
things to creep into the Christian church. I'm quoting from Dr. Gilbert
Murray, who was Professor of Greek at Oxford University:
"Mlthralsm, which was sun worship, had so much acceptance that it
was able to impose on the Christian world its sun's birthday, the 25th
of December, as the birthday of Jesus."

You see, friends, we happen to know from Scripture that Jesus was
not born on December 25. In fact, He could not have been. First,
Caesar would never have a taxation going out, or a census going out,
in the middle of winter. The caesars never did that. They did the
taxation or census at the time right after the harvest when the people
were wealthy. The fall was the latest. They would never do it in the
middle of winter.

Page 29
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

Furthermore, shepherds in Israel do not keep watch over their flocks

at night, outdoors in December. It's too late in the year. In the fall
is as late as they would be doing that,

Third, we know that Jesus was thirty-three and a half years old by
counting the Passovers in the book of John. There are four Passovers
which make it clear that He was thirty-three and a half years old when
He was crucified. We know that He was crucified in the spring
because Passover was in the spring. As He was crucified in the spring,
and was thirty-three and a half, it is clear that He had to be born in
the fall, and you can ask any scholar about it and they'll agree-Jesus
was not born December 25.

Then you ask yourself the question, "Why does the entire Christian
world celebrate the 25th of December as Christ's birthday?" Well,
the reason is that the Babylonians, who studied the stars in the
heavens, noticed that on December 25 the sun began to return closer
to the earth. They noticed it going further and further away until the
winter solstice, when it once again began to return. And they cried
out, "The sun is reborn to us." That same day was the festive day
among the Persians of Zoroastrian fame. It became the day of
Mithraic worship, sun worship. It was passed down through Greece
and Rome. And in the days when the Papacy was getting started, the
most popular religion in Rome was Mithraism, sun worship, and their
most festive day was December 25. They [the church] took the pagan
day, baptized it, made it the birthday of Jesus, and everything was
fine. They did the same thing with the statues. They didn't destroy
the statues. They simply changed the names: Apollo became Peter,
Zeus became Paul, Minerva became Mary. You see, it was the easiest
way to convert the pagans.

Now, someone may ask, "Well, are you saying it is a sin to think about
the birthday of Jesus on December 25?" No. Thank God that we can
think about Jesus' birth every day of the year, but there are certain
pagan trappings, of course, that we can stay away from. It's not a sin
to think about the birthday of Jesus on any day of the year. It's not
a sin to sing "Joy to the World" or "Silent Night" any day of the year.
The only reason I bring this up is to share with you the fact that pagan
things did come into the church through the beast,

Page 30
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

J could talk about Easter. In fact, let me quote to you from The Two
Babylons by Alexander Hislop. On page 103 it says: "Easter bears
its Babylonian or Chaldean origin in its very forehead. Easter is
nothing else than Astarte, one of the titles of Bettis, the 'queen of
heaven,' whose name, as pronounced by the people of Nineveh, was
evidently identical with that now in common use. "

Let me ask you a"question: what do rabbits and Easter eggs have to
do with the resurrection of Jesus? Nothing. But isn't it interesting
that in Babylon at that very time, the first Sunday after the first full
moon after the vernal equinox, they were painting eggs and
worshipping the rabbit because of its ability to reproduce. The rabbit
and the egg were symbols of Astarte or Ishtar, the queen of heaven,
who was the fertility goddess of the Babylonians. They celebrated
her day on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal
equinox, the same time at which the Catholic church to this day
celebrates the resurrection of Christ, Now I believe we can think
about Christ's resurrection in the spring, and we can sing "He lives,
He lives," but friends, one thing is clear. It has nothing to do with
Astarte, the goddess of heaven. It has nothing to do with bunny
rabbits and Easter eggs.

Now that just goes to show you how easily pagan things can creep
in. Those things don't get me too excited. If Jesus had given us a
specific day in honor of His resurrection, or a specific day in honor
of His birth, and then the beast came along and changed it and said,
"No, you keep another one, that would get on my nerves. But since
II

Jesus never did say to honor this day in honor of My birth, then the
fact that this happened isn't all that upsetting. I think we should think
about His birth and His resurrection every day, not just on those two
days of the year.

Now the Bible is clear that all this takes place, and yet I close on a
good note. The woman still escapes. We've talked about the beast,
and we've talked about the dragon. Here is where North America
comes in. You will discover what part North America plays in Bible
prophecy. Notice what it says in Revelation 12: 1,

'itnd there appeared a great wonder In heaven; a woman clothed

with the sun, the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown
of twelve stars:"

Page 31
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

Now who is this woman? Well, a pure woman in prophecy represents

the people of God. Jeremiah 6:2 says,

"I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate

tooman,"

And Isaiah 51: 16 says,

I~ •• say unto Zion, Thou art my people. /I

So Zion is the people of God. We could go to Isaiah 54:5 and 6,

"For thy Maker is thine husband ...For the LORD hath called
thee... a wife of youth ... /I

He speaks of His people as a woman. And of course, in the New

Testament, in 2 Corinthians 11:2 Paul writes,

"...that / may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ."

So the word "virgin" here means a young woman [a wife of youth].

Paul had espoused the church as a young virgin woman to Jesus
Christ, Who is the bride of Christ? Why, that's the church. In
prophecy God's people are represented as a woman, and in this
prophecy we see the woman representing God's Old Testament people
and His New Testament people as well. First of all, it says the woman
is clothed with the sun and the moon is under her feet. Now the moon
represents the shadows of the Old Testament reflecting the sun of
righteousness, the glory of the New Testament. And then it goes on
to say in Revelation 12:2,

"she being with child...pained to be delivered."

Remember, Christ was born of the church in the wilderness. The Old
Testament people of God brought forth the Messiah. But as you come
to verse 5 it becomes clear that this Messiah is,

''caught up unto God, and to his throne. /I

And then it mentions the woman again in verse 6. Now, who is the
woman after Christ's ascension? It can no longer simply be the Jewish
nation. In the Old Testament time the Jewish nation was part of that

Page 32
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

woman. But remember, there were some who were never part of the
Jewish nation who were part of God's bride. Abraham was not yet
part of the Jewish nation and yet he was one of God's children. Adam
was called "the son of God." So was Enoch. They were part of this
woman who will be part of the bride of Christ in the time of the end,
and yet they were not simply the Jewish nation. In fact, there are
many who were part of the Jewish nation who never became part of
this woman. Paul says that they are "not all Israel which are of Israel"
[Romans 9:6]. But as we come to verse 6, [Revelation 12] it's obvious
that we're talking about the church, because Christ has ascended into
heaven; and remember, after Jesus went to heaven He said, in Matthew
21:43,

':.•The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a

nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. I'

This other nation is the church. And, of course, Paul says that now
there's neither "Jew nor Greek" [Galatians 3:28], but we're all one in
Christ Jesus, because the middle wall or partition was broken down,
and we who were wild olive trees or branches have been grafted into
the one olive tree [Romans 11:23, 24].

So the woman in verse 6 has to refer to God's church, the same woman
that Paul referred to after the ascension of Christ, when He said, "I
have espoused you as a chaste virgin to Christ" [paraphrased].

Now, notice what happens to this woman. She flies into the
wilderness with two wings of an eagle, for a time, times, and half a
time or 1260 days. We know the woman is symbolic. The wings are
symbolic. Therefore, the time is also symbolic. And so, while the
beast is reigning with the kings of Europe in the popular centers of
Europe; the woman, God's church, flees into the wilderness for 1260
symbolic days or literal years. During the Dark Ages, the Middle Ages,
there were always heretics. There were always protestors or
Protestants, as they became called. But they weren't in the big cities
of Paris or London. They were in the wilderness areas. They were in
the Alps; they were in the different parts of Europe that were
wilderness. There they worshipped God and translated the Bible, kept
His commandments, and did not bow down to images. There was
always a people. Jesus said, in Matthew 16:18,

Page 33
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

'~..and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell
shall not prevail against It."

The reason we know there was always a people still following the
Bible is that the beast made war on the saints [Revelation 13:7].
Remember, when we talk about saints we're not talking about sinless
people. We're talking about people who love Jesus, are clothed with
His righteousness, and are following His Word and keeping His
commandments. That is what is meant by the word "saints," not
someone who's been dead a hundred years and then canonized. Right
now, you can be a saint as you accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour.
Ask Him to forgive your sins. He will cleanse you from all
unrighteousness, and give you His Holy Spirit [1 John 1:9]. Then you
are considered a saint.

Now, we come down to Revelation 12:14. It says that this woman

would flee into the wilderness where she would be nourished;
nourished with the bread of heaven, with the Word of God. The Bible
was still surviving even then, even though there was a great war
against the Scriptures. You know [that] Bibles were burned. Bibles
were not translated into the language of the people. When they found
someone who was translating them into the language of the people,
someone like Wycliffe, they burned them at the stake, because they
didn't want the Bible translated into the language of the people during
the Dark Ages. But they were still being nourished. They had the
Bible. And it said they would be nourished for a time, times, and a
half time, bringing us down to 1798.

Revelation 12:16 and 17 says,

"theearth helped the woman, and the earth opened up her mouth,
swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make
war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments
of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. /I

The remnant is the church at the end of time. What is a remnant?

It's the last piece of cloth. It's the last piece of carpel And so John
says that after the 1260 years the earth would help the woman, and
God's people would once again be free from the persecution of the
dragon and of the beast to preach the gospel in all the world. Jesus

Page 34
The Beast, the Dragon, and the Woman

said, "then shall the end come" [Matthew 24: 14]. But look; the earth
helps the woman when? After 1260 years, after the Dark Ages, after
the Middle Ages, after the time when the beast and the kings of Europe
would be reigning together there. After that time "the earth helped
the woman."

Now let me ask you a question: Where did God's people find a place
of refuge? A place of religious liberty? A place of freedom from which
they could launch the greatest end-time missionary work that has ever
been seen in the history of the world since the days of the apostles?
America. That's right "God bless America and shed His grace on thee,
and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea"
Friends, this North American continent was in the plan of God. There
was indeed a manifest destiny. America has played that part And I'd
love to say Canada as well, but Quebec didn't do a whole lot of good
when it was still under the strength and power of this beast, In fact,
Protestants in Quebec had their tents burned down, their homes
burned down, and were very much persecuted when the system of
the Papacy was entrenched in that country. Now it's changing, and
thank God, the gospel is going to all the world. But it's true that in
the United Slates of America, religious liberty was promised as the
nation was founded. In fact, 1798 is just a few years off from the
signing of the Bill of Rights which guaranteed religious liberty.
Before that it wasn't even promised in the States. In fact, there was
that state known as Mary Land, where there were Protestants who
just as viciously killed people for their beliefs. Friends, thank God
that the Bible says, "Whosoever will, let him come" [Revelation 22: 17,
paraphrased]. The Bible doesn't tell us to force our religion down
people's throats. Jesus is the Lamb of God. He's not the beast,

What have we learned? This is what I hope we've learned: Follow

Jesus Christ and not the beast, Follow His Word and not the traditions
and commandments of men. Be sure that your faith is built on the
Rock of these sayings of Jesus, and not upon the shifting sands of
men's opinions. Be sure that in these last days of earth's history your
faith is in Jesus Christ, and that you will "follow the Lamb
whithersoever He goeth" [Revelation 14:4].
