The document discusses guidelines for the use of modified bitumen in road construction. It notes that the clause on modified binders was deleted in the 5th revision, but the 2002 guideline is still referenced, even though the 3rd revision from 2010 exists. The 2010 revision unified the requirements for all types of modified bitumen, but it is better to follow the 2002 guideline which separates the limits for different types. The 2010 revision also recommends minimum bitumen contents that seem too high, and the design content from the Marshall Method should be used instead.

The clause of Modified binder in 4th. Revision has been deleted in 5th.revision.
But in Appendix-1- List of
IRC publications referred, IRC:SP:53(2002) – Guideline on use of Modified Bitumen in Road Construction (second revision) has been mentioned, though the 3 rd. revision of this guideline (IRC:SP:53) has been already published in 2010. In IRC:SP:53(2010), the limit of the required characteristics of all varieties of the modified bitumen including CRMB and NRMB have been made unified. It is like making same specification for two different kinds of thing. Thus, when it is the question of modified bitumen (PMB) or CRMB, it better to follow IRC:SP:53(2002), where the limit of different characteristics of PMB, CRMB & NRMB have been mentioned separately, not the 3 rd. revision(2010) of the same which is also an industry practice. IRC:SP:53(2010) has also recommended the minimum bitumen content for the modified bitumen for different grades of bituminous mixes which seems to be on the higher side. The design bitumen content as determined by Marshall Method of mix design should be the guiding. The clause of Modified binder in 4th. Revision has been deleted in 5th.revision.
