STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS-II LECTURE NOTES-15 UNIT-IV

Theoritical (or) Linear Arch

For a given load system, the shape of theoretical arch is that of a funicular polygon drawn
with a particular

pole ‘o’ such that or, oq, or respectively represents the thrusts in various parts of arch.

This can be described in a diagrammatic way.

Here OP,OQ,OR,Os represents thrusts in various parts of Arch. But practically

speaking, it can’t be

possible to give an arch it’s theoretical shape since moving loads will pass over an arch
and it can’t be

Mads to change it’s shape to suit varying load positions. Hence centre time of arch is
given a shape of

circular, parabolic or elliptic shape.

EDDY’S THEOREM:-

Statement:

Bending moment at any section of arch is proportional to the ordinate (or) intercept
between given and linear arch.

Consider an arch subjected to the system of loads as shown in figure.

Let us consider reactions be VA, VB and horizontal thrust as ‘H’ construct a polar diagram
such pq,qr,rs

In the diagram represents W1,W2 and W3 to certain scale. On this load line mark ‘m’
such that ‘mp’

Represents VA and ms represents VB. Select ‘O’ such that Om represents H. Join
Op,Oq,Or,Os,. This

Is called polar diagram.

Taking ‘O’ as pole draw a funicular ACDEB

Obviously here AC 11 OP, CD !! OQ, DE !! OR EB !! OS

Now imagine a structure ACDEB consisting members AC,CD,DE,EB which are all pin
joined at

A,D, & E. This structure is called linear arch. All members are subjected to axial forces
only.

It can be easily realized that the shape of linear arch follows shape of free B.M
diagram for

A beam of same span & same loading

Gives B.M in S,S Beam

Free B.M at any section ‘x’ = (Polardislance om) X Y

= HY1

B M. at any section in arch = HY

Net B.M = H (Y1- Y).

B.M α ( Y1 –Y1)

i.e B.M at any section in given arch is proportional to the vertical intercept
between actual &

linear – Arches.
