EXPLORING ANIMATION INTRODUCTION

What is animation? Write down your own definition of the term.

Animation to me is simply the process of creating an image by hand and then turning into a video
through technology. Its hasn’t always been technology based of course, Lotte reniger is the
reason we have movies and games, but she had to do things the old-fashioned way.

How does a thaumatrope work? Which animation principle can we see in action here?

EXPLORING ANIMATION
You get two pieces of string and attach a small piece of card to them. You draw an image on one
side and on the other side draw a image to match that one. They have to be perfectly aligned. A
bird cage is a common one you will see, draw the cage on one side and then the bird. If you hold
the two pieces of string and flip the card around fast, you will only see one image despite the fact
that you drew two.

How well did your thaumatrope work? Explain what could have improved its effect.

My one wasn’t great mostly because of my lack of skill when it comes to drawing things. I drew a
circle on one side and eyes and a mouth on the other to make a face, but I failed to align them
properly, so I ended up seeing two images when I was flipping the card. If I ever need to do this
again, I will take more care and see to it then they line up perfectly.

We have now looked at a whole range of animation techniques. Explain the two animation
principles they have in common.
