7. Stigma- ​a mark of shame or disapproval that results in an individual being shunned or
rejected by others.
8. Suicide- ​the act of intentionally taking one’s life
9. Cluster suicides​- the occurrence of two or more suicides or suicide attempts, or both,
that occur closer together in time and geographic space.
10. Nicotine​- the addictive drug found in tobacco leaves, which is a stimulant.
11. Stimulant​- increases the action of the central nervous system, the heart, and other
organs.
12. Carcinogen​- a cancer-causing substance
13. Tar​- thick, sticky, dark fluid produced when tobacco burns
14. Carbon monoxide​- colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas
15. Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS)​- is the exposure to tobacco smoke – not from your
smoking, but from being exposed to someone else's cigarette, cigar, or pipe smoke.

17. Sidestream smoke​- the smoke from the end of the cigarette
18. Depressants​- drugs that slow down processes of the body; colorless, tasteless, and
odorless
19. Intoxication​- the body is poisoned by a substance and physical and mental control is
reduced significantly
20. Binge drinking- ​drinking five or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting
21. Alcohol poisoning​- a severe and potentially fatal physical reaction to an alcohol overdose
22. Psychological Dependence​- a condition that develops over time and causes a person to
believe that a drug is needed in order to feel good and function normally
23. Physiological Dependence​- user develops a chemical need for the drug. Symptoms of
withdrawal can occur when the effects start to wear off. Symptoms can include
nervousness, insomnia, headaches, vomiting, chills, and cramps.
24. Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)​- the amount of alcohol in a person’s blood,
expressed as a percentage.
25. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome​- a congenital syndrome caused by excessive consumption of
alcohol by the mother during pregnancy, characterized by retardation of mental
development and of physical growth, particularly of the skull and face of the infant.
26. Sobriety​- the state of being sober.
27. Substance Abuse​- any unnecessary or improper use of chemical substances for
non-medical purposes
28. Illicit drug use​- chemical substances that people of any age may not lawfully
manufacture, possess, buy, or sell
29. Overdose​- strong and sometimes fatal reaction to taking a large amount of a drug
30. Anabolic-androgenic steroids​- are steroidal androgens that include natural androgens
like testosterone as well as synthetic androgens that are structurally related and have
similar effects to testosterone.

35. Apathy​- lack of strong feeling or interest or concern
36. Empathy- the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
37. Alcohol poisoning- A disturbance in behavior or mental function during or after alcohol
consumption.
38. Alcohol abuse- the habitual misuse of alcohol.
39. alcoholism- an addiction to the consumption of alcoholic liquor or the mental illness and
compulsive behavior resulting from alcohol dependency.
