Week of April 13 – 17 at a Glance

1. Spelling – Unit 6 Week 1 - words with open and closed syllables (see phonics)

*High-Frequency Words – front, someone, door 
 
2. Grammar – Unit 6 Week 1 - Adjectives, Including Articles 
* An adjective is a word that describes a noun (a person, place, or thing). Adjectives can 
tell what kind or how many. 
* An article is a special kind of adjective. Use ​a​ before singular nouns that begin with a 
consonant sound. Use ​an​ before singular nouns that begin with a vowel sound. Use ​the​ in 
front of singular and plural nouns. ​The​ is used to tell about a specific thing or group. 
 
3. Reading – Unit 6 Week 1 
a. Phonics- Open & Closed Syllables 
*An ​open syllable​ ends with a vowel and the vowel sound is usually long.   
Examples: tiger = ti – ger music = mu - sic 
*A ​closed syllable​ ends with a consonant and it has a short vowel sound.  
Examples: exit = ex – it kitten = kit - tin 
b. Structural Analysis – Compound Words 
*A ​compound word​ is a word made up of two smaller words.  
Example: hand + made = handmade 
c. High-Frequency Words 
*door, front, order, probably, remember, someone, tomorrow, what’s, worry, 
yesterday 
d. Vocabulary Words - invented, money, prices, purchase, record, system, value, worth 
e. Stories 
*​The Life of a Dollar Bill ​(soft back book story) 
* ​Money Madness​ (hard back book story) 
 
4. Math – Chapter 9 Data Analysis 
a. Am I Ready? - Introduction of Chapter 9 
b. Lesson 1: Take a Survey 
c. continue to study math facts 
 
* Don’t forget to be doing your art, gym, & music assignments this week! Mrs. McElroy asked 
that for computers each week you can type your spelling words 2 times each in a Google Doc and 
share it with us. If this is not possible then please continue to work on your typing skills in your 
typing club.
