16 A) Device a circuit that could be used with a domestic washing machine to switch on a pump. To
pump Water for 100s into the machine then switch OFF and switch ON a heater for 50s, to heat the
water. The heater is then switched OFF, and another pump is to empty the water from the machine for
100s.

B) The temperature in a furnace has to be controlled using a microprocessor. Explain the arrangements
with an illustration. Write anassembly language program for temperature control.

11. A) A cantilever beam of length 10m long and carries two concentrated loads of 5kN each
at a distance of 3m and 7m from the fixed end. It also carries a uniformly distributed load
of 1kN/m between the point loads. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams
and calculate the maximum bending moment.

12. A) A close coiled helical spring is required to absorb 2250 joules of energy. Determine
the diameter of the wire, mean diameter of the soaring and the number of coils necessary,
if:
The maximum shear stress is not to exceed 400MPa.
The maximum compression of the spring is limited to 250mm and
The mean diameter of the spring is 8 times the wire diameter.
Assume rigidity modulus as 70GPa.

B. Tow pipe of 20cm and 30cm diameter are laid in parallel to pass a total discharge
of 100lps. Each pipe is 250m long. Determine discharge through each pipe. Now
these pipe are connected in series to connect two tanks 500m apart to carry same
total discharge. Determine water level difference between the tanks. Neglect minor
losses in both cases. Take f=0.02 for both pipes.

1.a) A rigid tank containing 0.4m of air at 400 kPa and 30oC is connected by a valve to a piston cylinder

device with zero clearance. The mass of the piston is such that a pressure of 200 kPa is required to raise the
piston. The valve is opened slightly and air is allowed to flow into the cylinder until the pressure of the tank
drops to 200kPa. During this process, heat is exchanged with the surrounding such that the entire air remains
at 30oC at all times. Determine the heat transfer for this process.

b) Air expands isentropic process through a nozzle,air flows at the rate of600kg/hr at inlet to the nozzle
pressure is 2MPa and temperature is127oC to.the exit presssure of 0.5MPa. Detrmine the exit velocity and
the inlet and exit areaof nozzle, if the initial air velocity is 300m/s

2. a) A gas of mass 1.5 kg undergoes a quasistatic expansion, which follows a relationship P=a+bV,
where ‘a’ and ‘b’ are constants. The initial and final pressures are 1000 kPa and 200 kPa respectively and
the corresponding volumes are 0.2 m3 and 1.2 m3. The specific internal energy of the gas is given by the
relation U = 1.5(PV – 85) kJ/kg, where P is in kPa and V is in m 3. Calculate the net heat transfer and the
maximum internal energy of the gas attained during expansion.
or
b) A heat engine operating between two reservoirs at 1000 K and 300 K is used to drive heat pump
which extracts heat from the reservoir at 300 K at a rate twice that at which engine rejects heat to it. If the
efficiency of the engine is 40% of the maximum possible and the co-efficient of performance of the heat
pump is 50% of the maximum possible, make calculations for the temperature of the reservoir to which the
heat pump rejects heat. Also work out the rate of heat rejection from the heat pump if the rate of supply of
heat to the engine is 50 kW.

3.a) A Carnot heat engine receives heat from a reservoir at 1173 K at a rate of 800kJ/min and rejects the
waste heat to the ambient air at 300 K. The entire work output of the heat engine is used to drive a
refrigerator that removes heat from the refrigerated space at 268 K and transfers it to the same ambient air at
300 K. Determine the maximum rate of heat removal from the refrigerated space and the total rate of heat
rejection to the ambient air.

b) In a closed system air is at a pressure of 1 bar, temperature of 300 K and volume of 0.025 m 3. The

1. A 230 V d.c. shunt motor has a shunt field resistance of 200 Ω and an armature resistance of 0.2 Ω.
For a given load, motor runs at 1500 r.p.m. drawing a current of 20 A from the supply. If a resistance
of 100 Ω is added in series with the field winding, find the new armature current and the speed.
Assume load torque constant and magnetization curve to linear.

2. (a)Design the starter resistance with suitable calculation.
