Smoking reduction/cessation

Brief intervention
Smoking cessation should be a goal for persons with CAP who smoke. Smokers who will not quit should
also be vaccinated for both pneumococcus and influenza.

Smoking is associated with a substantial risk of pneumococcal bacteremia; smoking was the strongest of
multiple risks for invasive pneumococcal disease in immunocompetent nonelderly adults. Smoking
habits also disturb the mucociliary transport and cellular and humoral defense system.Smoking
cessationis very important not only helps limit the damage to the lungs, but also because cigarette
smoke disturb the natural body's defense system against pneumonia.

Smoking can affect the immune system as it can cause respiratory infections, accompanied by the
weakening of the bronchi and lungs, impaired immunity (immunity) to facilitate bacterial or viral
pneumonia to survive and damage lung tissue.

The most successful approaches to cessation smoking are change smoking habits, and emotional
support.
