Struggling to engage
with learning

 Motivation (theory);

 Language barriers;

 Time management;

 Technology + computer skills.

Motivation (theory)
Lack of motivation lead to weak results. In an article of online publication
oxfordlearning.com (25.09.2019), was showed that constraining students to study can lead
to a loose of self-respect, which make students harder to get motivated. There are many
elements that are affecting the learning process. Most relevant personality factors that are
affecting learning process are beliefs, character, motivation. Between all this, motivation is
fundamental for studying (Dahmardeh, M. & Hunt, M., 2012).

Language Barriers
Studies have showed that International Students determined language knowledge as main
barrier in the academic learning (Lee, 1997). In UK the main issue associated to language
proficiency are calligraphy and oral understanding and speaking (Robertson et all, 2000).
The problems related to language proficiency, according to He’Ilsten and Prescott (2004),
cause time pressures, more time needed to learn and do the homework, the lessons need to
be taped and listened again.
Since 2010 the people who have English as Second Language (ESOL) has risen increased in
UK by 20% in the last period, according to The Guardian.

Time management
Time management represent a set of “behavioural skills” in the process of learning (lay &
Schowenburg, 1993). An adequate time management lead to better learning (Trueman &
Hartley. 1996). An acceptable time management skill have a “buffering” reaction, reducing
anxiety and the level of stress (Kearns & Gardiner, 2007).
A poor time management can lead to difficulties in study process, in planning and ending the
tasks, and students may become nervous and under-pressure toward the finish of the
modules (Ling, Heffernan and Muncer, 2003).
Technology + computer skills
Another factor that need to be mentioned is the poor knowledge of technology and
computer skills which can lead to a longer time for students to learn and finished the
assignments.
In a report published in June 2016 by authority of UK Parliament was said that UK is facing a
“digital skills crisis”. In the same report it is shown that around 12,6 million people of adult
age are facing difficulties in used of computers, and about 5,8 million adults did not used
internet in their life (House of Commons, 2016).
