3.0 DEFINITION :
The temperature at which the substance attains a particular degree of softening under specified
condition of test.
4.0 APPRATUS :
Ring and bolt apparatus, stop watch, Hot plat & water bath.
5.0 PROCEDURE:
Heat the sample between 75 0 C to 100 0C and stire until free from air bubbles. Place the rings
on a metal plate previous heated to a temp near to the molten material which has been coated
with equal past of glycerine and dextrin and fill with sufficient melt to give an excess above
the level of the ring when coated after cooling for 30 minutes in air level the material in the
ring by removing the excess.
Assemble the apparatus with the rings . Thermometer and ball guides in position and fill the
bath to a height of 50mm above the upper surface of the rings with water at a temperature of 5
0 C for 15 minutes.
6.0 Reporting of results: The temperature for each ring and bull, at the instant the sample
surrounding the ball touches the bottom plate of the support.
Report the mean of two determinant to the nearest 0.5 0 C .
