BROCK® Outside Ladder and Cage About This Manual

About This Manual

The intent of this Manual is to help you in two ways. One is to follow step-by-step in
the order of assembly of your Outside Ladder and Cage. The other way is for easy
reference if you have questions in a particular area.
IMPORTANT! Read ALL instructions and study all Figures carefully BEFORE starting
construction.
IMPORTANT! Pay particular attention to all SAFETY information on Pages 6-7.
• Metric measurements are shown in millimeters and in square parentheses, unless
otherwise specified. " equals inches and ' equals feet in English measurements.
Example: 15' [4 572] 24' [7 315]
• “Horizontal” (—) and “Vertical” (l), Bottom and Top, in the instructions refer to
the bin as it is standing.
• Optional equipment contains necessary instructions for assembly or operation.
• This Planning Symbol at left is used in areas where planning needs to take place
before construction continues.
• Major changes from the last printing will be listed on the back cover.

Identification of Parts and Hardware

IMPORTANT! No hardware substitutions are permitted unless noted.
Diagrams are provided throughout this Manual to identify Parts and Hardware used
in that application.
• Parts and basic components are identified in Figures and their accompanying
Tables as “Items” with a black number in white circle.
• Hardware is identified with a white number in a shaded circle. Pay particular
attention to the Grades specified for each connection. See Figure 1. Hardware
Item numbers are listed after the Parts in the Figure Table.
• Dimensions and lengths are noted with a white circle on an arrow or line, then
identified with numeric values in the Figure Table.
• Specific holes, positions, or locations mentioned in the text are noted in the Fig-
ure with an asterisk*.

SAFETY
Recognize SAFETY Information
This is the Safety-Alert Symbol. When you see this symbol on your equipment or in
this Manual, be alert to the potential for personal injury. Signal words DANGER,
WARNING, or CAUTION, are used with the Safety-Alert Symbol.
This Symbol is used throughout this Manual to identify particular stages where the
bin Contractor and/or Operator need to take special note and precautions regarding
the DANGER described in these Instructions. Please read all the SAFETY
information and the instructions completely prior to beginning the construction.

Understand Signal Words

DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, WILL
result in death or serious injury.
WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided,
COULD result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, MAY result in
minor or moderate injury.

Follow SAFETY Instructions

Carefully read all SAFETY messages in this Manual and on your equipment
SAFETY signs. Follow recommended precautions and safe operating practices.
Keep SAFETY signs in good condition. Replace missing or damaged SAFETY signs.
Read and observe these precautions. Call the Dealer or Manufacturer for replacement
if the Decal is missing or damaged. If the Decal becomes damaged or worn with use,
replace it.
WARNING! Never center the Outside Ladder over obstructions, or in conflict with
other equipment. Such obstruction results in an unsafe installation. The
Ladder must be moved clear of the obstruction. Failure to do so creates
a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or
serious injury. Refer to the Platform Manual for diagrams to help in
getting started.
WARNING! Failure to follow proper assembly of the Ladder could cause damage to
equipment or personal injury.

WARNING! Ladder installations MUST use all specified connecting Brackets to maintain
SAFETY. Failure to follow specific Hardware instructions during assembly
could result in serious operator injury and /or structural damage.

Ladder Planning and Overview BROCK® Outside Ladder and Cage

Ladder Planning and Overview

All BROCK® Ladders, Cages and Platforms, when properly installed, are designed
to meet or exceed specifications required by ASAE Standard S412.1.
When you see this Planning symbol, decisions must be made regarding your
particular installation.
Ladder Alignment Begins at the Roof
Plan from the Roof down to avoid obstructing Doors or other Bin components. Allow
for adequate clearance of Platforms from adjacent bins.
Refer to your appropriate Roof Construction Manual to install Roof Panels, Roof
Ladder, Roof Ladder Handrail where applicable, and the Manhole. The Roof Ladder
will be in the first Roof Panel to the left of the Manhole.
Outside Ladder-and-Cage Sections are installed approximately every two or three
rings or tiers as the Bin is raised—and, if an Inside Ladder is installed, on both sides
of the Body Sheets.
Avoid Obstructions
Ladder and/or Cage assembly begins as soon as the Roof is installed.
WARNING! Never install the Outside Ladder in conflict with other equipment. Such
obstruction results in an unsafe installation. The Ladder must be moved
clear of the obstruction. Failure to do so creates a hazardous situation
which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. Refer to the
Ladder installations Platform Manual for diagrams to help in getting started.

Add Ladder-and-Cage Sections

Continue building the Ladder and Cage downward as the bin is raised and Rings/
Tiers are added. Narrow Corrugation: attach Ladder Standoff Brackets (Item 2A, 2B
or 3) at every other horizontal seam; Wide Corrugation: attach at every horizontal
seam as shown in Figure 17 and Details.
Ladder Sections are bolted together using Ladder Rail Splicers U-23774 (Item 11),
5/16 x 3/4" Gr. 5 Hex Head Bolts and Flange Nuts. See Figure 14.

Cage Assembly BROCK® Outside Ladder and Cage

Channel Overlap
Overlap Channels to attain exact Cage height. For Cage Channels to end at the
proper height above the foundation, they often overlap and use the second hole
position from the end (see * Figure 28 at left) to take up extra length (one Channel
for 10'' [254] or both for 20'' [508]). This overlap can be made at any time during a
straight run of the Ladder before reaching the flared Bottom Section. For any
overlap needed per running section (Top/Mid/Bottom), locate your model (Ladder
Complete) on the Chart on pages 32-33. Go straight across from each section to the
Overlap column to find the take-up length for each run.
Cage Side Bracing with Channels
IMPORTANT! In longer Ladder runs between Platforms and at the Flare, use leftover
Channels to brace the Cage sideways to the bin.
Flatten and break the end of the Channel. Bolt it to the tank wall and Cage to stabilize
the Cage. See Figure 29 below.
