Bio-Reactor Alignment Surveys - United Kingdom

Bio-Reactor Alignment Surveys

Warner Surveys (WS) were contracted to carry out dimensional
control surveys to two Bio-Reactors, both 50 metres long and
5.4 metres in diameter (on the riding rings). The Reactors were
wobbling, resulting in the outlet hole placed in the centre of the
outlet caps moving both radially and axially and proving detri-
mental to the performance of the reactors.
Assessing Misalignment
It was suspected that this was potentially due to either the sag-
ging / mis-alignment of the concrete plinths, mis-alignment of
bogie supports and / or the concentricity of the riding rings.
WS provided a two-man team to carry out the required survey
works. This consisted of taking measurements to key critical
components thought to be influencing the performance of the
Reactors during their operation. Readings were taken during the
Reactors unloaded and loaded states.
Primary Control is Crucial
We started by establishing a primary survey control network
around the areas to be surveyed based upon an established site
coordinate system that we were able to base localised control
on. This control network consisted of a number of strategically
placed inert and unobtrusive 20mm adhesive reflective targets
placed on surrounding steelwork.
Surveyed Locations
Measurements were taken on the ridings rings to:
a) provide accurate vessel centrelines,
b) to check as-built dimensions were within design toler-
ance, &
c) to check concentricity of the 6 sets (per Reactor) of rings.
Measurements were also be taken on the 6 pairs of bogie sup-
ports (per Reactor) to ascertain that the centres of the rollers
were in line in relation to each other, along with further read-
ings on the embedded steel on the concrete plinths and other
locations deemed critical on the support steelwork.
Result—Reactor set back into Alignment
Data was processed to enable the mechanical contractor to
make the necessary adjustments to ensure correct operation
of the Reactors.

Heat Exchanger Survey - Kuwait

Heat Exchanger Survey

Warner Surveys (WS) successfully carried out precise dimen-
sional survey, 3D laser scanning and generation of a 3D
model to check the feasibility of a replacement Heat Exchanger
instalment in close proximity to existing units of the Heat Train
located at a Petro-Chemical plant in Kuwait.
Dimensions for the scanning area were 10.00 m length X 8.00m
width X 8.00m height.
3D Laser Scanning & Intelligent PDMS Model
Part of the WS scope was the 3D laser scanning and genera-
tion of an intelligent 3D model in PDMS / PDS of the marked-
up equipment, inlet / outlet piping, primary and secondary steel,
and support beams.
Ovality Surveys for Cutting the Vessel
Dimensional control (precise) ovality surveys at the intended cut
point seam welds (East and West ends of the unit) along with
further ovality surveys on the two exterior tube sheet welds close
to the cut locations were taken. Measurements for the ovality
surveys were recorded every 300mm at the centre of the four
welds.
Result - First Time Lift & Fot of Newly Fabricated
Components
Utilising data provided by WS, the replacement vessel section
was fabricated and installed on a first time lift and fit basis during
the subsequent plant shutdown.

VDU Restart Project - Germany

VDU Restart Project in Germany

Warner Surveys (WS) mobilised a specialist team to carry out
the 3D laser scanning associated with a VDU Restart Project in
Germany. The part of the site to be scanned was not in opera-
tion and had been idle for a number of years.
Primary Control Network Essential
The team started by performing a closed surveying control trav-
erse around the area to be surveyed. This ensured that all the
data collected by the laser scanner was correctly geo-
referenced to the site grid.
It was accepted that WS, as experts in the field of 3D laser
scanning, would include in our final product all pertinent infor-
mation and recommendations that were necessary for our client
to carry out further design / engineering works. WS arranged the
work schedule so that all equipment services and personnel
were available for the efficient execution of the 3D laser scan-
ning.
Client Liaison was Critical
Any unusual findings or occurrences experienced by WS during
the execution of the scanning which may have delayed the
schedule, invalidate previous findings or adversely affect
the usefulness of the final product were brought to the imme-
diate attention of our client.
