INTRODUCTION

What is Literacy Rate?


Literacy rate is the total percentage of population who can read and write. For instance, if the literacy rate of a nation
is 78, then it implies out of every 100 people 78 are literate. In case of male literacy the percentage of male population
out of total population is determined. Similarly female literacy ratio can be determined.
Benefits of Literacy to the Country?
A good literacy rate can help any country in the following ways:
1. Reduce crime percentage
2. Improve the Economic Growth
3. Reduces Poverty
4. Boost the cultural Diversity
5. Lower birth rate as increased rate of education in people
It also helps the people or individual in increasing personal benefits such as Empowerment, Self-esteem and
Confidence. A good literacy rate is very important for any country in its growth in several aspects.

What is INDIA’S Literacy Rate?


➢ Literacy rate of India in 2011 is 74.04%.
➢ The Male literacy rate is 82.14%
➢ Female literacy rate is 65.46%
Who are Literates?
An effective literacy rate according to Census is ‘the person who is seven years or more than seven years old
and who can read and write with understanding in any one language.

Interpretation of literates in different Union Territories of India is as follows:

• The average number of literates in different union territories of India is 2179854.857.


• The maximum count of literates is from the union territory, Delhi- 2737767
• The minimum count of literates is from Lakshadweep -52553
The total count of literates from different union territories of India is 15258984.
Interpretation of male literates in different Union Territories of India:

• The average count of male literates in different union territories of India is 1231020.571
• The maximum count of male literates is from Delhi -194856
• The minimum count of male literates is from Lakshadweep -28023.
The total number of male literates from different union territories of India is 8617144.
Interpretation of female literates in different Union Territories of India:

Conclusion:
From the above discussed data, we can conclude that maximum and minimum literacy rate for both genders
is from Andhra Pradesh and west Bengal respectively. While in Union Territories, Delhi is the highest
literate UT in India. So, we can say that our government should take appropriate steps to literate those Union
Territories and states which are not that much developed like west Bengal and Sikkim. Developed states or
union territories are more aware about importance of education system and that’s why they are growing.
