Global warming is one of the biggest threats humans face in the 21st Century and sea levels are
continuing to rise at alarming rates. What problems are associated with this and what are some
possible solutions?

Climate change is among the principal dangers facing people this century and ocean levels are
increasing dramatically. This essay will first suggest that the biggest problem caused by this
phenomenon is the flooding of homes and then submit building flood protection as the most viable
solution.

On one hand, the foremost problem caused by sea levels creeping up is the flooding of peoples’
residences. Millions of people all over the world live in coastal areas and if the sea rises by even a
few feet, they will be inundated with water and lose their property. Shelter is one of the most basic
of human needs and widespread flooding would cause millions of people to become homeless, not to
mention losing all of their possessions. The devastation brought about by this was clear for all to see
during the 2011 Tsunami in Japan, in which millions of people were displaced. Thus, it is a problem
that deserves the attention of stake holders around the globe.

10

On the other hand, a possible solution to this problem would be to build flood barriers. Flood
defences, such as dikes, dams and floodgates, could be built along coasts and waterways, thereby
stopping the water reaching populated areas. The Netherlands is one of the most populated areas in
the world and also one of the most vulnerable to flooding and they have successfully employed
various flood defence systems. This example shows that many countries have to take measures to
find practical solutions.

To conclude, stemming the rising tides caused by increasing global temperatures is one of the
foremost challenges we face and it will ultimately lead to many of the worlds’ cities being left
underwater, but a possible solution could be to utilise the flood prevention techniques already used
by countries like Holland. It is predicted that more and more countries will be forced to take such
measures to avoid a watery catastrophe.
=============================================================
Computers are being used more and more in education. Some people say that this is a positive trend,
while others argue that it is leading to negative consequences. Discuss both sides of this argument
and then give your own opinion.

There is an ever increasing use of technology, such as tablets and laptops, in the classroom. It is
often argued that this is a positive development, whilst others disagree and think it will lead
to adverse ramifications. This essay agrees that an increase in technology is beneficial to students
and teachers. This essay will discuss both points of view.
To start with, the internet has provided students with access to more information than ever before.
Moreover, learners have the ability to research and learn about any subject at the touch of a button.
It is therefore agreed that technology is a very worthwhile tool for education. Wikipedia is a prime
example, where students can simply type in any keyword and gain access to in-depth knowledge
quickly and easily. Thus, the internet has become an integral part of academia.
However, many disagree and feel that technology deprives people of real human interaction. Human
interaction teaches people valuable skills such as discourse, debate and empathy. Despite this,
human interaction is still possible through the internet and this essay disagrees technology should
be dismissed for this reason. For instance, Skype and Facebook make it possible for people to interact
in ways that were never before possible. This means that people can save time, money and effort by
simply socializing via the internet.
In conclusion, while the benefits of technology, particularly the internet, allow students to tap in to
limitless sources of information, some still feel that people should be wary of this new phenomenon
and not allow it to curb face to face interaction. However, as long as we are careful to keep in mind
the importance of human interaction in education, the educational benefits are clearly positive.

Internet must have censorship. Do you agree?

Intro: censorship

B1: adult websites + youngsters

B2: suicidal rates (Blue Whale)

The world wide web has become a platform for personal and professional
purposes. However, despite its importance, the internet has got some hazards, and
I adopt the view that some websites have to be censored because they present
adult material and others expose youngsters to suicidal attempts. In the lines
below, my point of view ill be further explained.

To start with, on the internet, some youths access porn websites which harm them
psychologically and mentally. In other words, when young students surf such
websites, they can be easily distracted from their academic tasks and even distort
their personal and romantic relations eventually. This has been scientifically proven
by a research paper which was published by Cairo University; as per this study, it
has been found out that youngsters who have ended up tragically with a marriage
separation were once addicted to these websites. This means that the internet can
pose a threat to the social structure of any nation.

In addition to the idea mentioned above, the cyber world is full of other hazards to
the future generations. This is because there have been some advancements in the
online game industry that has led to a high rate of suicide among young men and
women. A prime example of this is the death of two teenage girls in an Egyptian
governorate called Mansoura, and they were addicted to an online game called the
Blue Whale. Thus, the Egyptian government has issued a decree that such websites
have to be banned and blocked.

After presenting the ideas above, it can be restated that the internet is an open gate
and people have to be selective. If the world governments have not taken action
against malicious websites, many generations will pay the price and there will be
dire consequences in the long run.

Do the advantages outweigh= surpass the disadvantages? (Or) TEXA (another advantage +
example) S
People travel to developed countries and leave their countries. Do the advantages outweigh
the disadvantages?
‐ Adv: education + Top ranking universities in Europe and America + Zewail

12

‐ Adv: health conditions + health facilities + for free in Canada and England.
‐ Disadvantage:
However, others are of the belief that there could be a disadvantage by
moving from one’s home country to another. This is because people leave
their roots and family back at home and are exposed to other foreign
cultures and traditions. In other words, those people claim that there
could be some homesickness. In fact, I disagree with this contention
because thanks to the upheaval in the field of telecommunication,
immigrants and travelers can still correspond with their beloved families
via social media platforms and even mobile applications. Thus, a person in
Canada can see his parents almost on a daily basis through Skype or
Facebook messenger.

Advantage 1
Advantage 2
Disadvantage + criticism

Some people believe that homework for children has to be cancelled while others
disagree. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Educational and school assignments are an integral part of any child’s life. Some people hold
the view that homework can have negative effects on (1) their children’s mental and
psychological abilities, whilst others disagree (2)because such tasks can help both teachers and
parents follow up on the academic progress of pupils. I agree with the former opinion, for
educationalists should be keen on developing a child’s imagination and intellectual abilities
rather than stressing them out with assignments. Both points of view along with mine will be
further explained in this essay.

Body 1:

To begin with, some people and I agree that…

Body 2:

Why do parents want to teach their children a second language at an early age? Do you
think this can affect their national identity?

13

Parents are always keen on providing their children with quality education. Some fathers
and mothers send their offspring to international schools so that they learn a second
language, but some parents are concerned about the cultural identity of their junior family
members. I am of the view that teaching young learners a second language is quintessential
if parents want to prepare their juniors for a global market, and language acquisition does
not pose a threat to their national persona. These ideas will be further explained below.

The picture below shows the recycling process of wasted glass bottles. Summarize the
information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where
relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

The diagram illustrates the process of recycling wasted glass bottles. Overall, it is clear that
there are three distinct stages in the recycling process, beginning with the collection of unused
bottles and ending with the delivery of new bottles.

At the first stage in the process, wasted glass bottles are gathered at a collecting point and
delivered to a cleaning plant by a truck. At the second stage, glass bottles are washed in high-
pressure water before being categorized according to colors which normally include clear,
green and brown. After that, the bottles are sent to a glass factory where they are broken
into pieces. The process continues with burning these pieces in furnaces at the temperature
of 600- 800c, and then liquid is produced. The recycled liquid glass and the new liquid glass
from other sources are then shaped in a glass mould to produce new bottles.

At the final stage, new bottles are transported to supermarkets where the products are ready
for sale. (162 words)
