Intraoperative Functions
= “Minimizes the risk of infection by maintaining aseptic technique throughout the
procedure.
= Inserts intravenous catheters, urinary catheter and nasogastric tbe as ordered.
"Positioning and draping.
Coordinates activities and anticipate the needs of the team.
= Performs as a scrub or circulating nurse as needed, based on knowledge and
expertise for a specific procedure.
= Provides. skilled assistance to physician during the procedure and assist
-anesthesiologists in induction of anesthesia as needed.
= Keeps contaminated instruments and supplies away from the stcrile field to avoid
infection and maintain the sterility of the procedure.
= Maintaining accurate record of all the nursing activities during the surgical
procedure.
* Documents accurately all necessary records of the patient after every procedure.
Postoperative Functions:
= Cleanses contaminated instruments and areas and facilitates sterilization and
disinfection
= Provides accurate care and handling of all specimens gathered during the
procedure and endorses them properly to the nurses on duty or relatives.
= Communicates postoperative patient to appropriate person at the conclusion of
care.
* Monitors level of consciousness, vital signs and intake and output,
= Inspects dressings, pads, tube patency and placement of drainage for
characteristics
= Responsible in doing meticulous housekeeping and prepares the unit for the mext
procedure
Senior Staff Nurse Functions:
= Functions as role model to perioperative students and new staff.
= Functions as patient advocate by protecting the pafient from incompetent,
unethical or illegal practices during the perioperative period.
* Responsible in orienting and training new staff in the clinical set up, policies and
procedures of the unit,
= Revision and conceptualization of policies and procedures needed for the
improvement of services provided.
* Prepares and submit to the Chief Nurse the weekly staff schedule or rostering.
* Keeps records of and submits to the management the patient census and inventory
of supplies and equipments monthly and annually.
= Scoures and maintains all patient records and unit reports.
= Ensures availability of equipment and supplies in the unit.
