I've never been able to complete any of these out of boredom -- including the new
Drakensang games. Everything is there: turn-based combat, lots of
micromanagement stuff (blankets when you rest or catch cold, torches or it's too
dark to see), a bunch of oddly named spells and other bro-approved stuff but damn

FAQ as the manual and in-game descriptions do almost nothing in that regard.
"Lightning" for example blinds enemies -- it doesn't electrocute them. There's
probably a spell called "blind" that does that.

* create a group consisting of a warrior, a dwarf, a mage (combat oriented) and fill
the rest with elves (one of each type will do, I guess) - elves are quite useful all-
around characters.
You could probably win with an elves-only party.

* raise lockpicking on your dwarf, you don't really need other thieving skills
* forget about most other character classes, although a Thorwaler might still make a
decent fighter, and a rogue is ok-ish, too, but overall the dwarf should be better
* put at least a few points into the exorcise ghosts spell (don't remember the name,
and anyway don't know the english one) with your mage, otherwise you may end
fucked up at one point
* remember that you need to satisfy some basic needs: food, water, clothing (in
civilization at least), some equipment

turning myself into a seer. You won't understand any of this, and I'm almost incapable of
explaining it to you. The idea is to reach the unknown by the derangement of all the
senses. It involves enormous suffering, but one must be strong and be a born poet. It's
really not my fault." --Arthur Rimbaud on joining the Codex

- Have your mage charge his wand! You won't need to carry around a rope with a
level 4 wand!
- In Blade of Destiny, there's a cave in Prem you might want to check out.
- Spend some time in Daspota if you're ever low on money ; )
- NPCs are also pretty rare in Blade of Destiny. I think there's a rogue in Phexhaven
(whatever the name is, the thief town) and a hunter in one of the taverns on the
northwestern-most island.
- Something might happen if you sail from Thorwall to Prem a lot!
- In Star Trail, ask the witch in the tent at the center of Gashok about the burned
mill.
- There are several very good NPCs hanging around Star Trail, but almost all of them
have a catch!
- There's a very good magic item in the dwarf pit in Star Trail! On the third or fourth
level (I can't remember, it's nothing but a big pool of water), try looking around in
the water before you drain it.
- In Shadows Over Riva, there's a really stupid optional riddle that asks you the
name of an important Das Schwarze Auge character. There's no way you'd know this
if you're not familiar with the series and he's not mentioned in any of the games.
Read this backwards if you want to know the answer: darabrob
- Shadows Over Riva is a much more story-driven game than Star Trail and Blade of
Destiny. Sometimes you have to walk around the town in places you've already been
to trigger important events.
Also -
Don't use any guides!!! These are games that really shouldn't be spoiled!

As far as elves, I've heard Sylvan are best, but how do Ice Elves compare? For
roleplaying reasons, I almost demand to play one, is there any benefit to one elf
over another?

But those are the only differences besides starting skill values which you can raise
each time you level up.

Do NOT ask for any tips, or read any walkthroughs. The ONLY thing you should be
asking is how to get the games to run on modern PCs, that is IT. Do NOT spoil
yourself, do not even read descriptions of what the spells do, as it is much, much
more fun to find out for yourself. Trust me.
Be prepared for the adventure of your LIFE. These are the best games ever made,
period. Startrail is the best crpg and the best game ever made. No two ways about
it. Nothing else even comes close. If these games have a weakness or negative

there is not much NPC interaction in the way of dialogues.
Be prepared to spend 4-5 hours generating your party (don't be a pussy, select
advanced char gen on game startup) Be prepared to spend around 2 hours leveling
up your party each time they level up.
Don't listen to that 'tard above, attack spells are rare true, but they are game
changing. Ignifaxus, the lance of fire, is brutally powerful. Yes, it drains most of your
mana if you use the most powerful level, but it can kill many foes outright in one
hit...assuming it works and you don't fumble/miscast the spell. (in which case you
still loose the mana! Yeah the game is fucking brutal). True, you can conserve your
mana and use much less mana draining spells like dancing (make your opponent
dance, available to druids only though) ball and chain (very useful spell in the
domination school) which can potentially disable a foe for the entire battle, etc etc.
However, sometimes there is a call for a powerful, flashy, attack spell. Against
bosses for example. Overall though, astral energy conservation is very important in
this game, especially considering how fucking slowly it regenerates: only when you
sleep, and even then agonizingly slow...and that's assuming you have food, water,
and do not have any diseases. You might think the last is not that important, but
believe me, you will spend quite a bit of time fighting diseases...and why not,
considering all the filthy claws and weapons of the creatures you fight, the open
elements in which you travel, etc etc. It will be a good idea to train your mages in
herblore so that they can find herbs in the wilderness for healing diseases.
(Oh and btw the iron rust spell is astral energy intensive actually, just like all spells in
the combat school, if I recall correctly)
Another thing, if you feel like being evil, you may want to specialize one of your

Also, I suggest two mages. One spec in Combat school, the other in Demonology
school (or any other). The only spell you will really need is called Transversalis
(Teleport), and it is in the Movement school. You will need it by the end game in
Startrail, in the final dungeon. It is very hard to level up, but it can be done easily if
you keep pumping a few points into it every level for one of your mages. Just don't
be a doofus and select Movement school for your mage just for this spell, it is not
needed. Oh and ofcourse, if you love magic, you can take even 3 mages. In fact a
party of 3 warriors (warrior, thorwalian, dwarf, etc etc) and 3 mages each spec in a
diff school sounds really fun. In combat you will be a beast.
Finally, remember that one of the best things about RoA is that you can carry
forward your party from one game to the next, with ALL items included, even RED
HERRINGS! This is the only series of crpgs where this feature (transferring party's)
was implemented perfectly. No other game have EVER done it as well. And yes, by
doing this you not only come out ahead a level or two (but not more than that), but
you get to keep all special items from previous installments. For a game where
magic items are EXTREMELY rare, this is a pretty big thing. For instance, there is an
item called a Magic Waterskin. If you have it, you never need to worry about finding
fresh water again. However, this item is only found in Startrail, and even there you
can miss it. If you found it in Startrail and then import your party into Riva, you will
play all of Riva without needing to worry about water again! It fucking beats finding
uBer mAgicK sWoRd + !!!1111!!! of kobold slaying twenty times in the first few
levels of a game.
Well, that went on wayyyy longer than I had intended, and yeah I kinda went
against the advice I gave in the first paragraph. But screw it, I love these games
and love talking about them. There is tons I could tell you, but I wont. Finding out
for yourself is most of the fun!
Such a shame though, that great games like these, and Ultima 7, and heck even
Baldurs Gate 2 to some extent, will never be made again in AAA+ versions .I am all
for indie games sure, I love Grimrock and Eschalon and KoTC, but apart from the
fact that even they do not come close to the greatness of Arkania, I really want to
see AAA+ versions of real crpgs. I want to be blown away like I used to be not just
by gameplay and combat and spells and character classes and options, but also by
increadible grafix and animations. Remember, crpgs were not always only about
gameplay. There was a time when crpgs excelled in not just gameplay, but also had
the best grafix the pcs of those times could produce. Lands of Lore was the prettiest
game ever released in it's time. It's animations and especially spell effects look

amazing even today...they do not pixelate at all. The Ultima's pushed the limits every
fucking time. Ultima 7 took the most advanced and most powerful pcs of the time to
run (a 486 if I recall correctly)
