ECGR 2254 – Fall 2020

Homework 1 Due: Friday 9/18/2020

Review calculus concepts (Chapter 1) as needed. Relevant sections from Chapter 3 are
noted. The first two sections of Chapter 4 are helpful for complex numbers, which we will
begin to study on 9/15.

1. Compute the following integrals. Note that your answers will in terms of the variable 𝑡𝑡.
You must enter the values of the undetermined coefficients.

𝑡𝑡 𝑥𝑥 2 −1
a) ∫0 𝑥𝑥+1
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 = 𝑎𝑎1 ln(𝑡𝑡 + 1) + 𝑎𝑎2 𝑡𝑡 3 + 𝑎𝑎3 𝑡𝑡 2 + 𝑎𝑎4 𝑡𝑡 + 𝑎𝑎5

𝑡𝑡
b) ∫0 𝑒𝑒 𝑠𝑠 sin(3𝑠𝑠) 𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 = 𝑏𝑏1 𝑒𝑒𝑏𝑏2𝑡𝑡 sin(𝑏𝑏3 𝑡𝑡) + 𝑏𝑏4 𝑒𝑒𝑏𝑏5𝑡𝑡 cos(𝑏𝑏6 𝑡𝑡) + 𝑏𝑏7

𝑡𝑡
c) ∫0 𝑒𝑒 𝑠𝑠 cos (5𝑠𝑠)𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 = 𝑐𝑐1 𝑒𝑒 𝑐𝑐2𝑡𝑡 sin(𝑐𝑐3 𝑡𝑡) + 𝑐𝑐4 𝑒𝑒 𝑐𝑐5𝑡𝑡 cos(𝑐𝑐6 𝑡𝑡) + 𝑐𝑐7

𝑡𝑡
d) ∫0 𝑠𝑠 3 es 𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 = 𝑑𝑑1 𝑒𝑒 𝑡𝑡 + 𝑑𝑑2 𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑒 𝑡𝑡 + 𝑑𝑑3 𝑡𝑡 2 𝑒𝑒 𝑡𝑡 + 𝑑𝑑4 𝑡𝑡 3 𝑒𝑒 𝑡𝑡 + 𝑑𝑑5 𝑒𝑒 3𝑡𝑡 + 𝑑𝑑6 + 𝑑𝑑7 𝑡𝑡 4 𝑒𝑒 𝑡𝑡
𝑡𝑡
e) ∫0 sin(𝑠𝑠) cos (𝑠𝑠)𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 = 𝑒𝑒1 sin(𝑡𝑡) + 𝑒𝑒2 cos(𝑒𝑒3 𝑡𝑡) + 𝑒𝑒4 cos(𝑡𝑡) + 𝑒𝑒5

2. Find the following derivatives. You must enter the values of the undetermined coefficients.

3. For each of the following sine/cosine waves, please determine the following:

• Amplitude
• Period
• Frequency (in Hz)
• Angular Frequency (in rad/sec)
• Phase angle
When computing the phase angle, recall that the phase angle 𝜙𝜙 is defined assuming that the
signal can be represented as 𝑥𝑥(𝑡𝑡) = 𝑋𝑋𝑀𝑀 cos (𝜔𝜔𝜔𝜔 + 𝜙𝜙). That means you’ll need to convert sine
waveforms to equivalent cosine waveforms to determine the phase angle.

a) 120 cos (400𝑡𝑡 + 30∘ )

b) 100 cos(300𝑡𝑡 + 10∘ )
c) 12 cos (2𝜋𝜋60𝑡𝑡 − 45∘ )
d) 70 sin(100𝜋𝜋 𝑡𝑡 − 20∘ )

4. Problem 3.5 in the text. Expand (d) into a sum of sine/cosine waves using trigonometric
identities. In each case, you must follow the following requirements:

• Start your plot at 𝑡𝑡 = −𝑇𝑇 and end your plot at 𝑡𝑡 = 𝑇𝑇.

• Create a time row vector 𝑡𝑡 that starts at 𝑡𝑡 = −𝑇𝑇 and ends at 𝑡𝑡 = 𝑇𝑇, with a step of
𝑇𝑇/1000.
• Review section 3.2 and include the following with each graph:
o xlabel
o ylabel
o title

Section 3.2 contains good information on how to develop good plots.

Since I have asked you to expand (d) into a sum of sine/cosine waves using trig identities,
make sure to choose 𝑇𝑇 to be the period of the waveform you found after the expansion.

5. We are going to learn about element-wise operations in MATLAB. Create a time row vector
𝑇𝑇
𝑡𝑡 that spans from 𝑡𝑡 = −𝑇𝑇 to 𝑡𝑡 = 10𝑇𝑇 in steps of 1000. Using this vector, please do the
following:

a) Write a for loop to compute 𝑥𝑥𝑎𝑎 (𝑡𝑡) = cos(100𝑡𝑡) e−10𝑡𝑡 . Create 𝑥𝑥𝑎𝑎 as a row vector.
b) Write a while loop to compute 𝑥𝑥𝑏𝑏 (𝑡𝑡) = cos(100𝑡𝑡) e−10𝑡𝑡 . Create 𝑥𝑥𝑏𝑏 as a row vector.
c) Use an element-wise operation to compute 𝑥𝑥𝑐𝑐 (𝑡𝑡) = cos(100𝑡𝑡) e−10𝑡𝑡 . Create 𝑥𝑥𝑐𝑐 as a
row vector.
d) Create a plot of any of the 3 answers above. Create a title, xlabel, and ylabel.

Pages 146-149 in the text provide good guidance on how to approach these problems. In
part c, the “element-wise” operation is the element-by-element operation described in
Section 3.6.

6. Simplify each of the following expressions into a single complex number. Provide your
answer in each of the following 2 forms:
• Rectangular form, i.e. 𝑧𝑧 = 𝑎𝑎 + 𝑗𝑗𝑗𝑗
• Polar form, i.e. |𝑧𝑧|∠𝑧𝑧

a) (−1 + 𝑗𝑗) + (3 + 2𝑗𝑗)

b) √3 − 𝑗𝑗 − 5∠45∘
c) (1 − 𝑗𝑗)/(1 + 𝑗𝑗)
d) (−1 + 𝑗𝑗)(1 + 𝑗𝑗)∗
e) 6∠30∘ − 4∠𝜋𝜋/2
2𝜋𝜋
f) 7∠ 3 (4∠ − 50∘ ) + 5 − 6𝑗𝑗
g) (1 + 𝑗𝑗)(2 − 𝑗𝑗) + 3∠15∘
