Reading Comprehension
Read the following passage and answer all the questions:
Life is Sweet

Life really is sweet for Sarah Stockly. This is because Sarah is employed as a taster at
Thornbury’s, one of Britain’s best known sweet makers, and has been tasting sweets and
chocolates there for the past 17 years. Every day she has a huge box of sweet treats on her desk
to finish before the day ends.

Sarah, who works in the chocolate development department, eats up to 1,5 kilos of chocolates and
sweets in a typical week. That’s the same as twenty bars of chocolate. She also samples about
200 new products a month. All of the tasting is done in a special dark, silent room, with no
distractions, so she can taste everything properly. Sarah does most of the tasting in the morning
before she eats anything else, as other flavours affect the ability to taste.

Sarah says, ‘The question I’m asked most is « Don’t you get bored of chocolate?» Well, I’ve
worked with chocolate for years and I’ve never felt like I don’t want to eat it any more. There are
other advantages of the job apart from a desk of chocolate, though. I often get to visit Brussels,
Paris or New York to see what confectionery is selling there.’
4

However, Sarah says, ‘It’s not all great. Sometimes flavour combinations aren’t very pleasant. I
particularly remember a cheese flavour chocolate. I remember disliking salted chocolate, but I love
it now. The main problem, though, is eating 1,400 calories every day. I walk miles around the
factory, which helps, but I also go running with my dogs every evening. If I didn’t, I’ get fat. I’ve also
had to give up coffee and spicy food as they have such strong flavours. I miss my Friday night
carry. Finally, it’s important to get on with your dentist, because you’ll be making a lot of trips there
for check-ups.’
