What is Blood?
Blood is made up of liquid and solids. The liquid part called “plasma” it is made of water, salts and
protein. Over a half of our body is plasma. The solid part of our blood contains red blood cells, white
blood cells and platelets (US National Library of Medicine, n.d.). Blood is found in blood vessels. Blood
vessels (arteries, capillaries, venules and veins) take blood to and from every part of our body. Blood is
pumped through blood vessels by our heart (Payne, n.d.).

What are the Composition of blood?

1. Red Blood Cells (erythocrates) – These make blood a red colour. One drop of Bloodcontains about
five million red cells.Red Blood Cells is needed to replace old cells that breakdown. Red cells
contain a chemical called haemoglobin. This binds to oxygen and takes the oxygen to the lungs to
all parts of the body (Payne, n.d.).
2. White Blood Cells (leukocytes) – They are part of the immune system. Their main role is to defend
the body against infection. They attack viruses and other germs (pathogen). They also make
antibodies which help to destroy pathogens (Payne, n.d.).
3. Platelets – these are tiny and help the blood to clot if we cut our selves, (Payne, n.d.).
4. Plasma – This is the liquid part of blood and makes up about 60% of the bloods volume. Plasma is
mainly made from water but also contains many different proteins and other chemicals, such as
Hormones, Antibodies, Enzymes, Glucose, Fat Particles and Salts (Payne, n.d.).

What are the 4 test of Blood

1. Complete Blood Count (CBC) – is an easy and very common test that screens for certain disorders
that can affect your health (Sullivan, 2018).
2. Chemistry ( basic metabolic) panel – is a combination of test that’s helps Doctor assess important
functions in our body. The test that make up the basic metabolic panel are blood (serum) test for
blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, glucose, albumin, CO2, calcium, sodium, potassium and chloride
(Case-Lo, 2017).
3. Thyroid panel – are series of blood test used to measure how well your thyroid gland is working
Available test include the T3, T3RU, T4 and TSH. It is also a small gland located in the lower front
part of our neck. Its responsible for helping for helping to regulate many of the body’s processor,
such as metabolism, energy generation and mood (Lou, 2020).
4. Blood Nutrient Test – To measure the level 16 vitamins, mineral and antioxidants essential to
healthy host defense and disease prevention (Metametric laboratory, 2020).
