What is on my English Teacher’s Playlist?

What does an English teacher put on her music playlist?

Your task is to pick a song from my YouTube playlist and figure out why I like it --
Remembering, of course, that I am an English teacher.

What is your name?

What is your goal?

Step 1: Make some basic assumptions:

INFER: What do you know, or think you know, about English teachers in general that might explain why they like
specific songs or types of music?

What do you know, or think you know, about YOUR English teacher’s interests or personality that you think would
affect the kind of music that she has on her playlist?
Step 2: Investigate the Evidence. Go to Ms. Wilhite’s YouTube Playlist at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?
list=PL264bLdlBN-o6C59LL_sAnFPn2_MIZWgM and take a listen. There are over 30 songs there. Take some
time to choose one that really speaks to you, too.

Step 3: Listen and listen and listen, find the lyrics, print them out, and listen some more.
There are a lot of websites out there that have written song lyrics. Some are better transcriptions than others.
Make sure to cross-check your lyrics to make sure you have the right words.

Step 4: What qualities does this song have that would make it appealing to an English teacher?
Consider the words! The figurative language, the literary devices, the themes, anything and everything.... In
addition, write a letter to me explaining why I like the song you have chosen. Type it in letter format,
double-spaced, on a Google Doc and upload it to this assignment on Google Classroom.

Practical Concerns: (1) (Q) How long does this have to be? (A) A million words or fewer.
(2) How many points is this worth? 50. Yes, 50. You can’t get less than an A unless you stop revising after my
feedback. We will converse through feedback and a series of letters back and forth. If you keep up the
conversation, you can’t go wrong. (3) This is due when Google Classroom says it is due.
