This to assess the uppercase and lowercase letters J. Doe can print independently.
This is an appropriate tool to assess the letters J. Doe can write and the letters she cannot write.
I defined the purpose of my observation and prepared the checklist. I decided to do the observation table
top using pencil and paper. My checklist has the letters of alphabet both uppercase and lowercase. I
would check P if the child prints the letter and F if the child failed. I provided a pencil and a paper to the
child. Note that some letters have already been checked as “passed” and for letters that she failed to write
are being tested again.
The J. Doe is comfortable with the teacher. She knows what to do as this is already the 2 nd marking period
and the observation has been done in the previous marking period. The observations happened quick as
the observer just choose between two options. She is well adjusted to process.

What aspect s of the observation of the observation you think you should improve?
I think it is beneficial if I provide a little space for notes. Checklist does not provide information about the
quality of the letters printed. It just only say that the letters are printed or not. It does give details whether
she formed the letters incorrectly, if they were written on the lines, or if the child held the pencil
incorrectly. A little note taking in the side might be helpful for my future use. However, for my observation
purpose checklist is the most appropriate. In the process, I think I should have provided more wait time for
the child for her to write. I also think I should observe the students in other activities other than writing on
paper I can make her write on the Promethean.
Do you think the approach you selected was a good match for the purpose of the observation? (Explain)
My purpose was just to identify the letters the child can print. This information is useful to track the
progress of the child from the 1 st marking period to 2nd marking period. This is quick, easy and suitable tool
for the purpose of my observation. This helped me identify if she learned or not. This tells me what letters
should she practice and what letters she mastered already.
Using checklist to know the child accomplished the objective of writing letters is a convenient way of
assessing. It helps me track the progress and the number of letters she can print. Definitely, I will use it
again. The checklist is straightforward and gives me the information I needed on the dot.

I would use the data to compare the results I had during the 1 st Marking Period and the 2nd Marking Period.
I would also reteach the letters she failed to write or I might modify my strategy in teaching letter writing.
